The Wager

Rate this book
The Princess - New Orleans's most luxurious hotel. Sixty years ago, ownership of the hotel was lost to the powerful Jardine family in a wager that cost its matriarch her greatest love. Now, in a daring bid to keep the hotel, her legacy and her family together, she's made a new wager, betting everything on a granddaughter she's never met.

IT WAS A HIGH-STAKES GAME...

After her mother's tragic death, Laura Harte learns her life has been a lie. All she has left are questions. Why did her mother hide the truth from her? Why had her powerful father denied her? The answers can only be found in New Orleans--with a grandmother she never knew existed...and a man she isn't sure she can trust.

Hotel magnate Josh Logan owns some of the world's finest hotels--but not the one he wants most: The Princess. He'll stop at nothing to reclaim his grandfather's legacy. Even if it means winning the heart of the young woman to whom The Princess rightfully belongs.

AND THERE COULD BE ONLY ONE WINNER...

But as the secrets and sins of the past unravel, Laura and Josh find themselves in a dangerous game where no risk is too great and falling in love is not an option.

It was okay but nothing special. It's one of those books where the story could have been told in half the pages, too much filler with descriptions and unnecessary details, as well as repetition.

The h wanted to know the truth about her mother and father, especially if her mother had indeed been in New Orleans and either left of her own accord or was coerced into it? And then that anonymous letter, with the money and request for a terminated pregnancy, who sent it? The h wanted to know, kept telling herself she wanted to know, yet kept putting off doing anything about it until the book was almost ended, which could pretty annoying.

I can't take credit for guessing who the writer was, I got it wrong, having picked up what I thought was a clue but turned out to be a red herring. The person responsible had the right motivation but was still being selfish and hoped to gain something they didn't end up getting.

Not enough time was spent on the h getting to know her new family and too much was wasted on her and the H getting horny for each other's bodies. Even before they hit the sheets, they're both practically panting with lust and groping each other, then stop, then start again, until it's like, "Will you two either get naked or take separate cold showers and forget the whole thing!

Aside from lust, you get very little vibe between them, so you'd never convince me these are two soulmates destined for each other, that whole thing just fell flat.

Actually, I would have liked this to have been written like those family sagas that were popular back in the 70's and 80's, with the different generations and their stories. I think the grandmother's story, as well as that of the h's parents, would have been much more entertaining reading.

And that whole card game thing was just stupid!

No big deal if you skip this one.

The book was great. Full of intense emotions, mystery, and discovery from the get go. Too bad the ending was so abrupt. A pleasant (and hoped for) ending, but nonetheless lacking after such a crescendo. Totally wanted more than what the author gave me on the last page, but still worth reading.

Always a sucker for novels with wit, romance, and a bit humor & suspense. Loved this book, always a favorite to go back and re-read on a rainy day ^_^

Re-read in 2017 and changed original rating from 5 to 4 stars, didn't like the abrupt ending.
