This book presents a brief outline of the history of western music, covering all important areas, with the main emphasis on recognition of style and period. A checklist of pointers, or ‘fingerprints’ of music style, is included for each period and the book ends with a main summary chart. The book is intended to help GCSE candidates in areas of the examination which involve the history of music and music styles, especially in questions where they are asked to identify the period and composer of previously unheard pieces of music.

اینو برای امتحان خوندم، اما واقعن کتاب جذابی بود. ولی برای شروع خوب نیست چون زیاد اصطلاح به‌کار می‌بره و اگه با مفاهیم موسیقی زیاد آشنا نباشی، فهمیدنش سخت می‌شه.

Um livro curto de 80 páginas que resume a história da música erudita. Cheio de exercícios e propostas de escuta, o livro desenha bem as mudanças entre períodos, descreve a evolução dos instrumentos e mostra uma boa linha do tempo narrativa da evolução da música no último milênio. Tudo é acessível para o leitor leigo e todos os conceitos de teoria musical utilizados são antes apresentados na abertura do livro. Mas eu gostaria de uma análise harmônica mais profunda e um retrato comparativo das inovações técnicas na melodia e harmonia com o passar do tempo. Queria ter adquirido mais noção do que era comum e esperado em cada época e o que seria algo original e revolucionário. Pra isso vou precisar complementar essa leitura, mas se o objetivo com esse livro for um overview rápido e fácil da história da música, vale a pena a experiência.

A bit on the short side (its title in Brazilian Portuguese was adapted to "A Brief History of Music" after all), but still a decent intro to the history of music in the West.
