This book is a mix of autobiography, biology, history and local culture. It's a trip back to the late 60's. It tells about shrimping, crabbing and killing a sea turtle. The description of the butchering of the loggerhead turtle is very graphic. It's similar to the graphic descriptions of whaling that are found in other books. The author tells of people just carelessly throwing trash into the water. It was a different time. Rules and regulations were different or missing back in the late 1960's. The book also describes many of the Gulf of Mexico's animals. I enjoyed the book, especially learning about the various critters, but I did cringe at some of the above mentioned points. Also of note, there is some politically incorrect language and gender bias. It definitely gives a glimpse of how far we have actually come with some of our attitudes.

A pleasant narrative of a collector of marine life for purposes of teaching and scientific research. Starting as a recent bio grad student dropout in the gulf coast of Florida, he learned his trade as he went. Working closely with shrimp fishermen and others, he learned while helping them and sorting through their detritus for the critters he needed for his clients.

Great book! How it all started. If you are ever driving through the little town of Panacea on Florida's northwestern coast, you must visit Jack's "Gulf Specimen Lab".
