Teaching through Text: Reading and Writing in the Content Areas (2nd Edition) 2nd edition by McKenna, Michael C., Robinson, Richard D. (2013) Paperback
Bringing all the research up-to-date, this Fourth Edition of Teaching Through Text provides a broad range of techniques to enhance students' literacy development and learning across the curriculum. Authored by two of the most respected literacy researchers, this text focuses on describing, illustrating, and applying both teacher-directed and student-centered strategies for content area literacy in middle and secondary grades.
Very useful teaching reference (and guide) to teaching reading literacy skills as a ocntent area teacher. My two biggest complaints about this book are that it glosses over writing strategies to focus on reading-related literacy methods. It is also heavy on the science with very few examples to support other subjects, which is a shame because I feel like the book has valuable information to offer.
This is a solid introduction to using literacy strategies in the content classroom. I especially like the chapters on teaching for diversity and building prior knowledge as well as the one that discusses getting to know your students, materials and teaching.
