Emily is the daughter of the mayor in a small town in Texas. She feels confined and constrained by expectations from the entire town. She has a job she hates and when her boss tells her either they have sex or she is fired, she leaves that job with a smile.

She decides to move to Dallas and find herself. It is the big wicked city and she feels sure that is just the kind of place where things will actually happen to her.

Jake came from the same small town as Emily. He was her brother's best friend and considered wild. When Jake shows up at the dismal and dangerous motel on Emily's first night in town, she knows her brother David must have sent him to be her watch dog.

There is an instant attraction between the two of them. Jake wants to be a protector but soon realizes she may need to be protected from him.

Emily is not certain what she wants and it seemed she acted very confused at times. Jake owns his own business and is successful but he still considers himself the bad boy from their small town. He is not sure he is “good enough” for Emily.

The strong physical attraction between the two of them drives the story through the ups and downs of a growing love.

After misunderstandings and lost opportunities there is eventually a happily ever after ending.

This is the first book I have read by Ms Rose. Her plot seems down to earth and follows many of the real world problems that need to be faced by people starting out into the world.

The characters of Emily and Jake at times were annoying for their lack of the ability to speak up. But, they are both people with past issues which hold them back from moving forward in their lives. That too seems to be something that is true of human nature, the ability of past hurts to color the present.

I received a copy of this book from the author in the hope that I would write a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
