My 2 year old loves this book, but I hate it. She found this book in a pile of books I had growing up and has decided it is a favorite. She is not currently scared of the dark and I worry this book will give her new fears. I actually don't read most of the text but instead make up my own narrative, and skip over the page with the picture of the snake and other scary things as quickly as she will let me. This may be a good book for a child who already has many of the fears listed.
Holy crap this is a scary book for kids. "Ernie, wasn't it scary when the Ghosties invaded the bedroom and grabbed the boy and flew him out into the night? Said Bert." Um, sounds terrifying, my kids eyes were bugging out when I read that part. I don't care what age kid reads this, thats too much. This story has several super scary scenarios and only one happy thought of being at the beach. Rest assured you will freak your kid out if you make this a bedtime story.
I remember spending a few nights like this as a kid. It was nice to see someone else going through it and then finding the perfectly reasonable explanations.
