Four duck brothers set out for the city on the number one train on track number two, but when they arrive, Little Zack Quack is missing, and his three brothers--Brick, Brack, and Thackery--set out on a lively tour of the city to find him, in an entertaining counting book.
This picture book is nearly perfect. Fun story. Hilarious illustrations. Unique concept. Plus it makes me smile every time I read it. It’s a book I want to share with every kid I meet. It’s one of the few books I never tired reading. It’s pretty much a superlative all the way around.
4 duck brothers go to New York City, but when they get there, the three older ducks can't find the youngest, Little Zack. They proceed to look all over the city for him (though he is visible on every page), and collect more people. There is also a counting motif going throughout the book, as they take the 1 train on the 2 track, the 3 ducks find 4 commuters, 5 taxi drivers etc. All the other people help them look for Little Zack (eventually including 80,000 baseball fans), only to find him back in the pond in teh country, where he exclaims that he was looking for them, causing everyone to look shocked. This is a fun little story with counting and various sites that the kids in my classroom probably know (the statue of liberty, grand central station, etc.). The repitition of phrases with numbers (3 duck brothers, 4 frantic commuters, 5 friendly taxi drivers, etc.) helps with counting, something that the child I am observing still needs work with (she understands counting, but she occasionally skips numbers or backtracks in English). It is also a good book to keep small groups of kids interested, as they could try to find Little Zack on every page.
When 4 duck brothers tack a trip into the big city, they quickly lose one brother. As they hurry from place to place looking, they continually pick up more and more people to help look.
Children will enjoy looking for the missing duck on each page as he can be found in each picture.
