A whirlwind romance takes British sleuth Patrick Dawlish and his wife across the English Channel on the hunt for a suspected killer.
According to the widow of Patrick Dawlish's late friend, it all happened so fast. Her daughter met a man at a party for antique dealers and, within a month, they eloped in France. Worrying about her daughter's judgment has taken a backseat to worrying about her life. Not long ago, an almost identical situation had fatal consequences. An assistant in an antique shop left for France without warning saying she was going to get married. But then she disappeared and was found dead weeks later.
How dangerous can a favor for a friend be? Dawlish and his wife Felicity are about to find out. Tracking the young couple across France turns into a race against time. Because someone is out to make sure that before the Dawlishes catch up to their prey, the newlyweds will be newly dead . . .
Gillian, a model, loves Clive, handsome antique buyer, though he met him just a month before at the antique show. So when he proposes an elopement and a trip to France, she agonizes a bit, calls her Mum for advice, doesn’t get her on the phone. Of course neither daughter or Momma realize she has agreed to Elope to Death.
Mom does realize she needs some help from the extraordinary ex-copper and spymaster Patrick Dawlish. So Patrick and wife Felicity go to France and attempt to chase Clive down. Meanwhile, a nasty set of villains start chasing after Patrick. How many will die or be maimed before our hero saves the day?
This is a chase thriller which moves quickly and would have made a pretty good movie. The deteriorating dynamics between Clive and Gillian are well done. The domestic squabbling between the great detective and his wife brings some humanity to an otherwise suspenseful but mechanical exercise.
Rather good — much like US pulp and worth a tumble.
