I was a little worried when I decided to get this book. It was one of those books that I got solely on my own gut interest based on the synopsis at the back of the book, and not due to the rating by others on Good Reads.
It wasn't a "wow" book, as expected from the rating I see here, but this book is still a neat light-and-fluff read for me, just the kind I was hopping for. I actually thought I was going to give up when I proceeding through the first 2 chapters when I couldn't visualize the architectural settings of the story, but the quirkiness of the book begin to pick up on me as the title began to emerge its meaning in the story.
It was a real hair-puller towards the end when you already know how it's gonna be and hoping it will just smack you in the face and let you be done with, nonetheless, it was still a sweet ending and I'm thankful it ended as I expected.

I really enjoyed this book about Rory, who has just split up with her boyfriend Martin after 11 years together. She is understandably heartbroken but believes it is just temporary until Martin realises he wants her back. Even though he has cheated on her, Rory's low self esteem still leaves her feeling that the breakup was her fault and that Martin was too good for her. This makes the book sound like it could be depressing, and for the first part of the story Rory is moping around barely making it out of bed and into work, but the book is made by the variety of wonderful characters she encounters. Rory goes to live with her Aunty Lyd, who runs a boarding house for actors, and her two boarders, Percy and Eleanor. She works for Country House magazine with her ambitious boss Amanda and her eccentric colleagues. She meets a series of unsuitable men and, in an effort to improve her prospects on the magazine, begins to write an internet column about her dates. But she begins to realise that some of her ideas about herself, her career and her ideal man may need a rethink. Maybe one of the Mr Wrongs she meets could be her Mr Right? or will Martin change his mind about the split? This is a great read and I highly recommend it.

This had a promising start, however, it lost any sense of a story after the first two chapters. I kept on reading because I felt it had to get better......it didn't! I had predicted the end by chapter 3, unfortunately I was right, no twists or turns, just predictable. I did give it an extra star due to the fact that I liked all the characters.

This book started of really well but then it just deteriorated after that. There wasnt really much of a plot and to be honest I just found the book boring and the main character was really annoying as she had no back bone! Bit of a disaapointing read!

DNF - I absolutely hated this! Mindless drivel that I abandoned at about 20%. I couldn't bare 1 more page of Tricky's stupid name of false posh accent

Ik moest heel erg inkomen in dit boek, maar uiteindelijk was het toch best wel een leuk boek.
Rory gaat na elf jaar uit elkaar met haar vriend. Hij is verliefd geworden op een andere vrouw. Rory gaat bij haar tante wonen die met bejaarde acteurs in een huis woont.
Op haar werk bij het tijdschrift Country House wordt de sfeer bepaald door de bazige manager die de inhoud van het tijdschrift over landhuizen 180 graden om wil gooien. Ze wil hippe, jonge vrouwen aanspreken. Daarom wordt Rory har rubriek geschrapt. Ze komt met een nieuw idee om een column over het daten van foute mannen te maken.
Haar eerste date is een man waarvan ze denkt dat hij homo is, maar die toch hetero blijkt te zijn. Daarna volgt een 68 jarige man en vervolgens een date met een straatmuzikant. Door deze laatste date wordt haar hoofd op hol gebracht. Na een date met de stagiar van werk komt ze toch weer terug bij de straatmuzikant Malky. Wanneer ze hem mee naar huis neemt, verdwijnt hij voordat de zon op komt. Hij heeft al het eten meegenomen uit de koelkast en Rory’s mobiel is opeens verdwenen.
Rory zit hoog in haar emoties en valt uit tegen de klusjesman Jim, die ze niet helemaal vertrouwd. Dat is de druppel voor haar tante Lydia waarbij ze in huis woont. Rory ontvlucht het huis, maar als ze terug komt dan zit haar ex Martin op de oprit. Tante Lydia heeft een hartaanval gekregen en ze konden Rory niet bereiken. Ze hebben Martin gebeld en hij is gekomen om op haar te wachten en Rory naar het ziekenhuis te brengen.
Door de hele situatie met Lydia is Rory zich een aantal dingen gaan beseffen. Ze wil zich meer op haar carrière richten en gaat meer keuzes voor zichzelf maken. Martin wil haar terug, maar als hij haar ten huwelijk vraagt wijst ze dit af. Via Lydia pakt Jim zijn kans. Hij regelt een etentje en verovert haar hart.

The overall story was alright but the majority of the characters including the main character Rory was incredibly annoying or dull depending on what was happening at the time. Things did get interesting for a time when she started dating the unsuitable men but I don't know why anyone would put up with half the stuff Rory did. Her younger self that her aunt described sounded much more interesting. I did like Jim but it took forever for anything to happen, his t-shirts did sound fun though.

Enjoyed this book
This was an enjoyable read, I did get frustrated at times by how blind Rory was being and did not like Martin at all! The only thing that grated on me was how the author spelt out how people were saying words in a posh accent, this got on my nerves a bit and sometimes made it hard for the reading to flow.

Predictable, unrelatable, terrible writing & offensive at times.
Predictable: this book sparked zero interest in me. Everything that happened, including the ending were extremely obvious.
Unrelatable: Don't read this book if you aren't British. This is a very British story. It is set in London, so since I live in London, I could understand the settings they were in. However, since I am not British, I could not relate to the British humour in the book. It is well known that the British quite like "banter" and often use this as a way to show affection. So I found Rory's search for love unrelatable, because I would not have looked for the same qualities.
Terrible writing: I hated how some words were spelled according to the way the character pronounced it, depending on their accent. It made Rory appear very narrow minded for judging people based on the way they speak.
Offensive: Since the story is told from the first person's perspective. we get to hear all of her unfiltered thoughts. This included some offensive descriptions and opinions of Americans. I am not American, but I thought this painted Rory in a very immature and uneducated way. She's nearly 30, but she comes across as very inexperienced in anything outside of her bubble. I don't think being in one relationship for the past 11 years should have anything to do with one's respect for others. So if the author was trying to portray that she was inexperienced due to her lack of a dating life, that's a pathetic and unrealistic reason.

Really enjoyed reading this one as it wasn't hard to pick up the easy flow of the story whenever I was forced to break away from it. Having previously read and highly rated the debut novel by this very same author, I'd hoped for more of the same tone from this one and I got it so I was happy enough and no complaints from me on that score. This one centers around a features editor in a posh magazine where the poor girl has always felt that she never quite fitted in and every day is a battle just to survive till the next. But her one place where she felt safe and secure and at peace was in her long-term relationship with her boyfriend of eleven years who she lives with and saw a settled future ahead of them, but not for much longer as that ship has sailed and Rory the female main character goes to live with her aunt (who's a mature actress with a hit show that made her famous) in a house that has two other elderly actors also lodging there, having found out that her boyfriend wasn't that perfect after all because he cheated on her. Loved the characters in this novel as Rory is challenged, having gotten herself into a bit of a rut by her workmate and boss to not only start dating unsuitable men but to write about her dates in a column instead of her usual articles on country house artwork. It is successful but the same can not be said of the men that she meets, seeing as they are hardly a replacement for Martin, her ex. But could Rory grow a set of balls if she sets her mind to it and could she ever cope without Martin to make the right decisions, on her own? And will she sleep with one of the unsuitable men? You will have to read it to find out and I for one am glad I did.

Rory is basically your typical lovely, normal girl who has sadly gotten into the rut of being with someone because it’s better to be in a couple than be on your own, even if the relationship isn’t that fulfilling. She relied on Martin, to the point where she has begun to lose herself. He is controlling and everything goes his way, and he’s totally boring! Rory has been a bit of a doormat to be honest and her self- esteem is on the floor, but in her mind she is in a solid, long term relationship that’s bound to end up in marriage and family and she is content with her lot. That is until Martin does the dirty on her and her world is turned upside down.
Having felt like she’s a bit in the background and not really noticed at work, as she works through the grief of her finished relationship, she finds herself getting to know her overbearing colleague Ticky better and getting somewhat steam-rollered into taking her advice. As a result this leads to a her beginning to write a new column basing her writings on her experiences of dating ‘Unsuitable Men’ as a way of getting over Martin and having all the ‘bad date’ experiences she never had when she was younger. Maybe if she experiences some of these it will give her a clearer idea of what she does what in a relationship.
There follows a series of amusing situations which poor Rory gets herself into, and she finds herself on a bit of a trail of self-discovery, all the while boarding at her Aunt Lyd’s house, a home with aging ‘has been’ actors and annoying plumber Jim which brings an enjoyable added dimension to the story.

Pippa Wright released her first book Lizzy Harrison Loses Control in 2011. Her latest release Unsuitable Men was released in March 2012 and was the first of her books I had read. Rory Carmichael is single after eleven years of being with her boyfriend Martin. It didn't take me to long to like her as a character; she works at at the posh magazine Country Life and doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere. With a little encouragement from her work friend Ticky, she embarks on a project.
Instead of trying to work out why her relationship went wrong, she is going to date as many unsuitable men as she can. The characters are without a doubt what make this book. Rory moves in with her Aunt Lydia who has two elderly lodgers. The two elderly lodgers are once famous Percy and Eleanor who make for some very entertaining conversations! Rory's Aunt Lydia is also very comical with her straight talking and her own secretive past.
I wondered whether the story would be enough to keep this book going, but to be honest the characters make it work. They are funny and entertaining and keep you amused throughout. There is also the various dates that Rory goes on, which thankfully weren't milked too much but made light hearted and funny instead.
Although this isn't maybe one of the best I have read recently it was certainly light hearted and refreshing. I love the fact that some of the characters are not the stereotypical young twenty-thirty something girlfriends. I enjoyed this book and would certainly look out for more of Pippa Wright's books.

I could not put this book down. I found myself downloading the Kindle App on every device I owned just so I could read this book wherever I was. I instantly warmed to the main character, Rory, and all of the characters within the novel were perfectly structured - especially Ticky. Pippa actually managed to get me to warm to Ticky, which I thought was going to be impossible.
The storyline was a great twist on modern dating and it was interesting to see how Rory reacted to her new found single life. A lot of people will probably comment on the fact that Rory seems to live just to have a man in her life, however, Pippa makes us see that if you have been in a relationship for as many years as Rory, it would be very difficult to adapt to living your life alone.
I especially like how towards the end Rory accepts herself as a person, rather than as Martin's girlfriend and only then does she open herself up to true love.
Brilliant work! I look forward to reading more from Pippa Wright.

This one was just a 'meh' book for me. I was hoping for a hilarious read, but it only made me chuckle on a couple of occasions, instead I just got bored. The whole Unsuitable plot line was interesting, but there weren't enough unsuitable men for starters and the ones there were, were utterly insane. Where have all the normal men gone, eh?
I also didn't like the way Ticky was written. I loved her as a character, but I hate when authors write posh characters the way they actually speak rather than just using the actual word. Half of the words didn't actually make any sense to me, which is always awkward.

Rory CarMichael is 29 years old she works for Country House Magazine, Martin her boyfriend has dumped her after 11 years he has another woman, Rory moves in with her Aunt but its only temporary until Martin comes to his senses but will he?
Rory is devestated and needs to get over Martin so comes up with a mission to date as many unsuitable men as she can find she also starts an unsuitable men column. But does she find Mr Right? or he he closer than she thinks?
I loved this book it was really funny, easy to read and follow, I enjoyed this book much more than the Authors last book and would definetely recommend.

I wanted an easy read and I got exactly was I was looking for!
I downloaded this for 20p for my Kindle. Its so hard to find good romantic fiction and this does the job nicely. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but then again it doesn't have to. Rory is a likable character (which sadly is so rare in chick lit today) and while it was obvious who she was going to end up with (You have read a chick lit book before right?) it didn't take away from the book.
Though to be honest, I felt that the relationship between Rory and the guy she ends up with (literally have no clue what his name was....) was a bit forced and I didn't really feel it.
Anyway, a pleasant enough way to spend a couple of hours.

Whoah, finally done with this one... Interesting enough, I was single when I started reading this book and end up with an "unsuitably suitable man" myself, just like the protagonist. Didn't expect that coming. In all honestly, I was just "trying this guy out" ha! as if he's an item... Thought it won't last a day or two, just a fling thing... but in just a couple of days, it's going to be a month. Why the low expectation? Cos he's... just unsuitable like that, but I guess, I'm judging a book by its cover. He's actually more than that.
Sorry that was really personal-ish. I just thought it'll be an interesting read, and it was. And thank you, Wright.

Unusuitable men was a cute little story about a girl named Rory who, after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, decides to date unsuitable men to write a column for a magazine where she works.
While nothing spectactular, this sweet little novel was just what I needed to get out of my reading slump. It was cute, with the perfect ending, funny and put a smile on my face quite a few times. Definitely recommend it if you're a fan of chick lit, you won't be disappointed.
