About the author

Thích Nhất Hạnh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist who then lived in southwest France where he was in exile for many years. Born Nguyễn Xuân Bảo, Thích Nhất Hạnh joined a Zen (Vietnamese: Thiền) monastery at the age of 16, and studied Buddhism as a novitiate. Upon his ordination as a monk in 1949, he assumed the Dharma name Thích Nhất Hạnh. Thích is an honorary family name used by all Vietnamese monks and nuns, meaning that they are part of the Shakya (Shakyamuni Buddha) clan. He was often considered the most influential living figure in the lineage of Lâm Tế (Vietnamese Rinzai) Thiền, and perhaps also in Zen Buddhism as a whole.

The book is easy to listen with a clear narration and has a lot of practical information and applicable recommendations. The detail level is ideal.

But these are life changing talks. The best of the best. After practicing the simple suggestions for about 1 week and listening more than once; I had the experience of not being afraid to be alone, because all the wonder of nature was before me. The change is observation versus constant chatter in my mind. I listen to this in the car and often re-listen to remind me to stay present. Just hearing Thich's voice is calming and on my exercise walks I catch a line or two that reminds me to be in the moment. Ha! If you can't understand his accent at first, keep listening it will be easier, and the tone of his voice will reach something beyond the mind's critic all the way to the heart.

This is hard to rate, because the content is excellent, but the edition is terrible. The dharma talks are in a random order, there is no basic context given (where and when is he talking??) and they jump around in time with no warning. He talks contemporaneously about Bush at one point and Reagan at another, to give you the idea. I would have loved them arranged chronologically, so you could see how his teaching and thinking evolved over time, since he often repeated stories and themes with slight variations to fit the context. The publishing house also interjected random CHECK OUT OUR OTHER TITLES ads between talks, which sucks.

Maybe Parallax Press will come out with a nice audiobook edition of his dharma talks!

Always delivers the right thought at the best time. There’s a message in each of these dharma talks relatable to everyday life. They provide a great way to find my inner peace and the figure out how I can apply what is being said to my life.

great for audiobook version, there was some sound quality, and noise in the background but it was a live recording Thich. So it was a great talk. For beginners, and experts (I guess) can work.

I didn't listen to all of these, but I really enjoyed the ones I listened to. I learned a lot about Buddhism, and more importantly, I learned a lot about mindfulness that I was able to apply to my life right away. Listening to these when I felt stressed out made me feel calmer immediately, and I love that he is interrupted by the bell many times throughout so I got to practice breathing and taking a moment to recenter.

Very good selection of talks. This includes material from the 1980's which is more political than I've heard in later material. Sometimes in the audiobook, the audio drops out momentarily. Not as focused as some of the other collections, but still quite good.
