Rosemary Elizabeth "Posy" Simmonds MBE is a British newspaper cartoonist and writer and illustrator of both children's books and graphic novels. She is best known for her long association with The Guardian, for which she has drawn the series Gemma Bovery (2000) and Tamara Drewe (2005–06), both later published as books. Her style gently satirises the English middle classes and in particular those of a literary bent. Both of the published books feature a "doomed heroine", much in the style of the 18th- and 19th-century gothic romantic novel, to which they often allude, but with an ironic, modernist slant.
A very enjoyable read that left me quite intrigued. I discovered this graphic novel.at the Post Simmons exhibition.
The story was very interesting so much so to the extent that it had left me to question what will be happening next with the characters even though it was a one shot volume.
Plus, I really like the colour scheme of the comic. It definitely reminded me a lot of 1950's comics.
Delicious work by Posy Simmonds on something that has a strong claim to be the first British graphic novel. Includes interviews, original artwork, audio and a look at Posy's notebooks. The Sequential app can be had here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/sequenti...
I enjoyed the art of this novel and I think Posy is very good at exposing the absolute ridiculousness and sexist behaviours of some men, like the character Stanhope Wright.
I consider myself a true Posy Simmonds fan now, I love her art style, content and dialogues.
I also absolutely loved the red coloring at bits, it made it very aesthetically pleasing and it might be that it very smartly portrayed symbols of love or where Posy considered varying amounts of love to exist.
Now my only issue is that I 100% do not enjoy at all reading about someone's infidelities.
I also loved the strip where she talked about married love and her experiences.
I am not sure if I would recommend this collection as it is about infidelity, you make your own choices.
