Samantha (Sam) Panini is a nineteen-year-old pickpocket. She has lost her parents when only six years old and has been raised by a pimp together with one of his prostitutes. She has been hiding her true sex by dressing and acting as a boy her whole life.

Christopher D’Angelo is a vampire who has lived for hundreds of years. Christopher has not been truly happy since his beloved wife died. Now his only chance at true happiness is to find his mate, which he cannot do unless he can get his hands on the blood diamond, a family heirloom that can show a vampire when a woman is his true mate.

After running into a young street urchin, Christopher is astonished when he discovers his pocket has been picked and his wallet stolen. While he is furious at the young man, he begins to get a glimmer of an idea. He has located his family’s blood diamond, but unfortunately, the building it is in is sealed against vampires. However, his little pickpocket is human, so if he could steal a vampire’s wallet and get away with it, he may very well have a chance at stealing the blood diamond. But he is in for a surprise when the pickpocket he believes is a boy turns out to be a dirty young woman masquerading as a boy. Intrigued, he takes Sam back to his home intent on convincing her to steal the blood diamond for him, until he is ensnared by attraction for the obviously sexually innocent young woman. Sam has no intention of staying with the vampire no matter how much she may want him, or how much pleasure he can give her. He is a vampire after all, so she escapes, or at least tries until she runs a fowl of another vampire, one with far less scruples than Christopher’s. Will Christopher be able to keep her safe? Will he convince her to steal the blood diamond for him? And what will happen when Christopher discovers Sam is far more than just a talented thief and a beautiful woman?

Paris Bites is one of those novels that you just cannot stop turning the pages. I love it! Sam is as feisty and fiery as they come, and I love how Christopher thinks he can control her while she just keeps him on his toes. Even his brother cannot best her, and I really love that little scene! The love between Sam and Christopher is very real, but so is the danger each must face because of it. Overcoming obstacles is the theme for this book. Sam and Christopher definitely have their fair share of them. The ending to this lovely story is perfect, and I for one will definitely be buying more of this author’s books. Oh, and the sex? Positively scorching and not to be missed!

As a street urchin, a pick-pocket, and an orphan, Samantha—who goes by Sam for short—has had a pretty hard life. She dresses as a boy to avoid the interest of men, and does what she’s good at to survive—stealing. But Sam is tired of being a thief. She’s not a bad person, really; just an end product of misfortune. The streets of Paris are hard on the homeless. While she might not like the man she works for, at least she has a place to lay her head. That is, as long as she can keep him from discovering her secret. Better to get out while she still can. Sam decides that one last big score should satisfy her boss. Then she’ll hit the road. Find a new life. Too bad things never work out as we plan…

Christopher is a typical vampire. He’s broody, introverted, and tired of the endless years of bloodsucking and meaningless sex. He wants to find his mate. Of course, he never expects the little pick-pocket who relieves him of his wallet is anything more than a young boy trying to get by. Furious when he discovers he’s been robbed, Christopher decides to track down the boy and put his skills to good use—stealing his kind’s most coveted prize: the Blood Diamond. Let’s just say he’s in for a big surprise when Sam turns out to be more than he expects. Beneath the dirt, grime, and stench he uncovers a beautiful woman who manages to get under his skin and change his life.

Paris Bites has an interesting plot line, but I struggled from page one with the wordiness. As though the reader might miss a pertinent point, the author repeats things, just with new words and another sentence. There were also several times when I wanted to feel the characters in their roles, not simply read about them. I felt as though the author told me what was going on instead of showing me. The characters’ actions didn’t always seem reasonable, given their situation and circumstances, and there were some blatant point-of-view violations that really caught my attention.

However, that being said, I do want to mention that the author does a great job with several analogies that are wonderfully creative. When I read them, I thought to myself, “That was perfect, she nailed it.” Ms. Lyons’ creativity and her interesting storyline kept me intrigued enough to keep reading. I do feel the ending was rushed and it seemed as though several monumental things were thrown in at the last moment, but I did enjoy Paris Bites as a whole.

Take one broody vampire, add a sassy thief, then throw in some undeniable attraction and you’ve got the makings of an interesting and exciting love story by Missy Lyons.

Let me start with the things I did like about Paris Bites: the setting, premise and main character Samantha. A vampire story set in Paris, centering on a vampire searching for his mate who runs into the female version of Oliver Twist. Christopher sees Samantha as the key to stealing an ancient jewel that will give him the power to locate his soul-mate. All of the above are the ingredients for a really good book.

However, while I loved the premise of this book I didn't enjoy the execution. There were a lot of missed opportunities starting from page one. There were also small inconsistencies such as within the first few pages describing someone as a boy then referring to the same person as a man, that took away from the flow of the book. Another problem with the book was the first person narration Lyons uses. The story is told from the alternating points of view of Christopher and Samantha. Christopher's narration distracts from the action in the story because he spends so much time explaining his motivations for everything. The author doesn't allow you to really get to know Christopher outside of his own thoughts. Samantha's narration was a bit better but still annoying. As a result, I could not really become invested in the story and found myself reading just so I could get to the end of the book. Unfortunately, I kept comparing Paris Bites to other paranormal romances that were constructed and edited better.
