Ideal for Teachers.

I started giving elocution classes recently and found this book an invaluable resource. Resonance, pitch, volume range and pauses are all explained in terms of the obvious benefits they bring to public speaking, but the sense of the voice as a precious object that needs constant private nurturing also comes through loud and clear. And clarity is the watchword here. Invaluable YouTube clips, voice games and an excellent demonstration CD show the extent of Judy App's research. There are confidence-building exercises and startling revelations about what your voice is actually capable of, though might want to check that the neighbours are out doing their weekly shop before you try some of them! Teachers will also find the advice offered here useful in helping to build up rapport with intransigent pupils through different vocal techniques: controlling silences and effective posture and gesture become an essential part of this process; speaking from recent experience in the classroom, I can promise you guaranteed success with this!

Your voice is your calling card. Almost anyone can improve the way that they speak and the message that they deliver.

I have a regional accent and at times I found this to be difficult for others to understand. This book, and a few similar titles has helped me to improve the way in which I speak. It does require practise though and self study. It takes time but give this book a go!
