Narrative: *** He wrote this in Spanish before or during 1986 and set this in the year 2002. It's an absolutely ravaged New York City that has already gone through two civil wars. I found it interesting that he focused on the World Trade Centers-> one is destroyed and only half as high but the other is the stronghold of the skinheads. The most interesting and exciting action is the attempt to destroy the impressive tower.
Art: **** He is wonderfully exacting with the wild vehicles of all sorts and broken architecture landscapes but the people are a bit blotchy. Everything is so busy that it can be distracting but as a whole I really enjoy his work.
Color: * The color is very obnoxious. There are so many different shades in each panel that clash-> almost as a rule. The separations are also very loose.
Comando + Mad Max + New York. Buena ambientación con rápida presentación de personajes. La pena, que es muy corto y queda un gran tema pendiente. Aunque como introducción sirva, se echa en falta al menos una parte más.
Great artwork and some of the world building is interesting, but also very dated, and unfortunately falls back on the extremely tired "hero must rescue the helpless princess from the tower" trope.
I first read the serialized version of this in the adult comic book Heavy Metal back in the ’80s. I was (and still am) really into post-apocalyptic scenarios. At the time, as a teenager, I was writing a computer game influenced by half a dozen different worlds by different writers. Rebel was one of the more visual influences, and although it was short, this slim 2009 book includes some extra material by the artist: character details, a lot of sketches, and notes on the socio-cultural influences Moreno used to spur the birth of Rebel.
Rebel is sort of Mad Max in post-war New York. Perhaps the most memorable visual for me, never forgotten all these decades, was a full-page view of the darkened Twin Towers, one half-collapsed, broken girders sticking up out of the debris. Years later, this would look almost true.
