You Spin Me
If two lonely people fall in love over late-night phone calls, will meeting face-to-face make them, or break them? In this heartfelt, slow-burn retro romcom, it may be the end of a decade, but it’s the beginning of a love story.

Child of Mine
When a job offer she can’t refuse means single mom Bella York has to work side-by-side with an unforgettable one-night stand, she has a choice to make. Revealing her past could mean losing everything, or gaining more than she ever hoped… for her, and her daughter.

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes
A novella in a couple's relationship across several New Year's Eves, including dating, sex, marriage, kids, job-changes, and moving. As steadfast in their support of each other as they are to the fight for reproductive rights, this sweet and sexy short is chock full of heart. **You spin me

If you want to read something unusual, fresh, original, this author’s books will please you. Not only the dive into a past decade is somewhat exotic–especially for younger people–but the characters are unconventional and interesting.

Here we’re introduced to Jess, an actress who’s starting to feel her age when she isn’t cast as an ingenue anymore, and Cal, a DJ hiding in the shadows because of burn scars. Between Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera, their story is both cute and sad. As in both classical stories, this book is about acceptance, but of oneself. Jess and Cal have a lot to learn about themselves to be able to have a relationship.

What I enjoyed the most is the world in which the love story exists. By following Cal in his work environment, we learn a lot about the behind the scene of a radio station. It isn’t just a gimmick, since his work is an important element in Cal’s growth. As for Jess, she’s an actress, so we see how casting and rehearsals work, but also what other kinds of job are out there.

I also appreciated all the details about Cal’s and Jess’s medical past. I can’t say I enjoyed it, because it was painful to read, but it gives another dimension to the story. It’s also a past they have to heal from to get together.

This book doesn’t gloss over difficult subjects, but there’s also a lot of humor, and the love story itself is great. It’s a slow burn, sure, but there’s a real and deep connection between Jess and Cal right at the beginning. Absolutely beautiful.

So I listened to the audiobook, and it was quite an experience! I’ve listened to the female narrator before, so I knew she would do a great job. The male narrator was new to me, and I enjoyed him a lot! His voice is quite pleasant, and he gave the right emotions to Cal. As usual, the author offers a unique experience in audio, this time with the short jingles and introductions the narrators do amazingly. After all, the setting is a radio station, audio is everything! And this here is a top listen.

**Child of mine

Each time I think I’ve read the best book in the series, and each time the author proves me wrong. This time, she tackles various subjects like child celebrities, addictions, single parenthood, and family conflicts, with her swooniest hero so far and a strong independent heroine. It was fun, sweet, sexy.

After a passionate encounter with a stranger, Isabelle ends up with a child and she runs away from her acting career to protect her daughter. Years later, she finds out that she’ll be working with the father of her kid, and that they’re still attracted to each other. She’s going to try and protect herself, her daughter, her family, her past, her job… her heart. Meanwhile, Henry is trying to show her that she can rely on him, that she isn’t alone.

One of my favorite aspects was the way Henry learns to be a father–going from grouchy adult to protective dad. He messes up, and Isabelle, who’s been a mother for several years already, reassures him. It was adorable, and so relatable. I also loved how he gives himself completely to Isabelle. First his body, because she’s totally in control of how and when they see each other, then his heart.

Though there were a lot of details regarding the creation of a kid show, all of them actually served the romance, showing both main characters in their professional setting, developping their working relationship, but also showing their abilities with children, highlighting Isabelle’s past on set, and Henry’s ambitions. It was clever, as well as interesting.

Secrets, and how they impact someone’s life, were the main theme of the story. While Isabelle is hiding a good chunk of her life, Henry is searching for the secret to be a good father and a good partner. The former was the reason for most of the plot, the latter created a balance between the bit of angst and some cute moments.

As usual, the heavier parts of the story are treated with a lot of respect. No judgement here, but no coldness either. They still induce a deep emotional response. I, at least, wanted to hug all the characters.

Another hit for this series!

When I read the book, I imagined Henry with a ‘sunny’ voice, though not exactly high pitched. I didn’t expect the deep low voice of the male narrator, but now I can’t hear it differently. It gives Henry more depth and it’s perfect. And his accent… swoony. As for the female narrator, she was her usual amazing self. The typewriter sound as a gimmick at the beginning of each chapter? Genius. A great audiobook for a great story.

**Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

(audiobook) The problem with novellas is that they end way more quickly than full novels. And I always want more.

I love the stories about established couples, because they feel relatable. Here, after a first scene about Dee and Sam meeting on New Year’s Eve, we leap a full year to their first anniversary, and they’re married–with all the trivial things that characterize the daily life of a couple. Though there’s unconditional love, there are also doubts, and personal decisions that affect the couple.

And every chapter, it’s a new anniversary, and it’s always full of changes–hence the title. I totally approve the gimmick, but it also felt like they didn’t do much during the rest of the year, keeping the big stuff for New Year’s Eve. Kids, work, home, Sam and Dee’s life doesn’t ever stay the same for long. I loved the dynamic between Dee and Sam. She’s the impulsive one, with big dreams and big decisions, while Sam is reliable. They need each other to grow as people.

The theme is subtle, and yet always there–reproductive rights. The characters meet at an abortion clinic; they talk about having a kid or not; Dee goes to law school to fight for and protect women’s reproductive rights… The author lets her opinion known through her characters, but considering the novella was first published in an anthology supporting reproductive choice, it isn’t surprising.

Between the serious topic of abortion, and the highs and lows of a couple, there’s a little bit of sexy, a good bit of fun, and some sweet domesticity that’s so relatable.

The author worked again with the narrators who did her other novellas, and again they do great. They offer the right energy for a short eventful story, and the emotions are there. A nice conclusion to this series.

4.25 Stars! Loved this Boxset!

You Spin Me (Boston Classics, #3)

Loved this book!

This is an 80s retro story; having not been alive in the 80s, I cannot tell you if the setting and aspects of the time period is accurate. However, it all sounded fun and I enjoyed it!

The book is about Jess (a former ballet dancer, turned working actress) and Cal (a radio show host). They go from strangers, to friends, to lovers, all through meeting and getting to know each other after Jess calls in on Cal’s radio show.

The emotions in this book, excellent! The characters, excellent! The storyline, excellent! The pacing, excellent! The writing, excellent! The romance aspects (which is kinda slow burn), excellent! The dance rep (as a former dancer myself), also excellent! Basically, if you couldn’t already tell, I thought this book was EXCELLENT!

I listened to the audiobook version of this story and the narration was so good! Especially the beginning of each chapter with the radio spot intros.

All in all, an enjoyable experience! 5 Stars!

Child of Mine (Boston Classics, #4)

3.75 Stars. Fun 80s nostalgic rom-com!!

(Audio Review)
Child of Mine is the 4th book in the Boston Classics Series by Karen Grey. Although, each book can be read as a standalone. This series is set in the 80s and this particular book follows Bella York and Henry ‘Hal’ Smith’s love story.

Although the secret baby trope isn’t my fav, I was interested in this book as I have loved all the previous books in this series. This book did not disappoint. I loved Bella and Hal’s chemistry, and their daughter Lilah was cute; I enjoyed all their interactions.

This book was slow at times especially at the beginning, but it picked up in the middle and by the end, I was completely invested. Overall, I had a lovely experience reading it.

Narrated by Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson. I especially recommend the audio version of this book as both narrators did an excellent job. I could definitely feel the characters in their voices.

I was provided a free advanced listening of this book. However, all opinions shared are my honest thoughts about this book.

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes (Exclusive Novella Originally published as part of the limited release Resolve anthology.)

4 Stars!

(Audio Review)
This is a cute short novella that takes place over a 17 year period. We get to see snap shots of our main couple, Sam and Dee’s relationship over the years. From their first meeting in 2005 to where they end up in 2022.

Although short in length, this novella covered a lot of ground. I loved how strong of a character Dee was in herself and her career. I also loved supportive Sam was to Dee throughout the years. We really got to see how much they had in common and also what they loved about each other. This novella, like the others in the original anthology it was published in (although I haven’t read the other works in the anthology), deals with and touches on reproductive rights, so that was a nice surprise. I liked how it was implemented here with Sam’s career as CRNA and Dee’s activism. Overall, a nice short read/listen.

The audio was narrated by Carly Robbins and Bradley Ford. Both narrators did amazingly and I enjoyed my listen. It was easy to get through, not just because of its length, but because of the quality of the audiobook itself and the performance from the narrators.

All of the narrators did a fabulous job bringing the characters to life! This is an A+ cast of narrators.

Boston Classics Box Set 2 is a must-add to your must-read collection. Author Karen Grey’s books always make you laugh out loud, swoon ‘til you shiver and put on your thinking cap about what’s really happening just under the surface. If you lived through the 80s you will be reminded of things that will make you nostalgic and of things you are happy have gone by the wayside. But to be sure, it was a different time. No cell phones, no obsession with social media, no streaming, no dating apps, yes answering machines, mix tapes, big hair, shoulder pads, attitudes, catch phrases. Grey captures it all perfectly: the setting, the music, the uniqueness of the time period, the special way relationships were formed and people communicated. It’s all there. Each chapter is always introduced by something cleverly connected to the story: disc jockey radio spots, soap opera gossip columns, New Year’s resolutions. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes a little sad, but always entertaining. And these stories were meant for audio. You can’t stop turning pages when you read one, but you need to be extra vigilant when you listen because believe me, you’ll get so engrossed you just might walk into something. A special shout out to all the narrators. Each and every one brings the exact right tone, pace, emotion and real-life presence to the story. They will all go on your list of favorites.

I was sent this free box set and am voluntarily leaving this honest review. Great characters, great plots, great smooches . . . what more could you want? I thoroughly enjoyed these stories and recommend them and everything this author writes without hesitation.

You Spin Me (Eric Michael Summerer, Vanessa Edwin)
You Spin Me begins at the end of 1988 when Jessica Abraham – vain, body-obsessed, afraid-to-grow-old Jessica Abraham – turns thirty, loses her day job, and loses the role of Ophelia to a younger actress. Not a good week. And then while she’s driving home one snowy night in early 1989 she knows the answer to a quiz on DJ Callihan Alonso’s alt-rock radio show and phones in. And suddenly for the reader it’s like violins playing and fireworks exploding. It just feels like . . . sigh . . . . Over nothing really. Just a phone call to a radio DJ. But not just a phone call. That start of . . . something. He worries about her and wants to know she gets home safe every night and asks her to call in just to let him know. And this becomes the highlight of their nights. As they talk longer and longer they feel closer and closer. But closer to what? He’s just that mysterious voice, the DJ with no posters and no publicity. He’s never seen her. She’s not sure she wants to be seen and judged on her looks one more time. It sure feels like a love story, though.

But of course it’s not that simple. Can you fall in love with a voice? And surely there’s more to Jess and Cal than an aging actress and a guy who is obsessively private.

As we listen in on more and more of their late-night conversations and get a peek at their “outside” lives we learn there is a lot going on with each of them, a lot of childhood trauma, a lot of adult fears, a lot of unwillingness to open themselves up to rejection. Can they ever get past those fears to trust? Are they doomed to this late-night bittersweet connection with no promise or hope for the future?

You Spin Me is, as are all the Boston Classics, a witty, funny, laugh-out-loud tale of two people who immediately seem perfect for each other. To the reader, anyway. But they have a few potentially huge obstacles to overcome and you should be prepared to shed more than one tear along the way. I was so worried about Jess and Cal I wanted to jump into the story and talk to them both. I really had no idea where author Karen Grey was going to go with the ending so I didn’t put the book down until I had read straight through. What wonderful writing, what wonderful people, what a wonderful story. And I was sorry to see it end and can’t wait for more.
******************

Child of Mine (Erin Mallon, Tom Taylorson)
In 1982, two people experience a moment of magic. Real magic. Unexpected, instant attraction, stars, violins, this might be it wow magic. And then, like sometimes happens with magic – poof! And these two people are left wondering, “What if?”

Jump to 1989. Bella York has a quiet life and wants to keep it that way. Raising her (incredibly precocious) daughter and working at the bookstore with her mother and being part of a local theater group is as much excitement as she wants. Until money becomes a big, big problem and she needs to get a job and ends up at the PBS station WGBH. But she doesn’t want her past to ever resurface. Enter Henry Smith, whose life is actually too quiet and who wants to see if he can get back on track after having to abruptly return home years ago and jump off the fast-track train. He, too, is starting work at WGBH. When he and Bella see each other – WHOA! Bella wonders if she can just run home and stay there. Because . . . well, because would be a spoiler and you need to read Child of Mine for yourself and enjoy every single minute of it like I did. But just let me tell you that the room gets pretty crowded with Bella and Izzy and Quinn and Henry and Hal in it! Pretty funny, and pretty steamy!

Author Grey is such a good writer. She has a knack for balancing the humor with the sadness, the fear to jump in with the desire to change life for the better, and for inserting phrases that make you laugh out loud, put your hand to your heart and say, “Awww,” or make you reach for a tissue. The plot is solid and just takes you along with it, making you love these characters so much you never want to leave them, and you want everything to be all right. Saying that Henry looks like a combination of Kurt Russell and Leif Garrett right off the bat doesn’t hurt, either. And the nostalgia of the crazy 1980s is a bonus.

Child of Mine is serious, sweet, saucy, and sexy, sexy, sexy all rolled into one. Old favorite characters appear, expanding the big, happy family we’ve come to love. Lilah is adorable in a so thoughtful and solemn it’s almost scary kind of way. Both Bella and Henry have some issues from the past that must be resolved if there is to be a future. There are surprises and unexpected revelations that need to be worked out. Grey juggles it all to a very satisfying conclusion.
******************

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes (Carly Robins, Bradley Ford )
Dee and Sam are drawn to each other from the moment they meet on December 31, 2005. Sam feels like the rest of his life has been decided as soon as he lays eyes on her and brings her that first cup of coffee. And what a life it turns out to be. Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes is a story about two very different people, committed to each other but also dedicated to their beliefs and ideals and to putting those beliefs into action. Those beliefs and ideals don’t always quite match up; they don’t always think alike or agree on that course of action, but they are good people who want to make an impact and they have a very strong bond, a bond that gets tested over the course of eight very-special-to-them December thirty-firsts we get to witness beginning with that first meeting in 2005 and ending about 6 months after December 31, 2022.

Mixed in with the humor and the heat and the huge decisions it seems are always being thrust upon Dee and Sam, author Grey unflinchingly addresses the always controversial topic of reproductive choice. She does it without being judgmental or preachy and takes us on a journey with two people who are dedicated to the cause in their own ways but who are thrown some very real-life curves to test that theory of blending staying true to the cause with forever love and happy ever after. It’s a story that makes you think, makes you agree with both Sam and Dee and want to help them figure things out and not lose that special, special, sweet, spicy, ooh relationship they have.

I am always delighted when Karen Grey gives us an in-betweener – a novella that bridges two of her books or elaborates on an event involving major characters, or dishes on characters that we didn’t get quite enough of. Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes is a flash-forward side-tweener or something and it’s as delightful as ever. The serious bits are balanced out by silly humor and sizzle. And I have to admit I got a little ‘aha!’ thrill when I realized who Dee is and her connection to my absolute favorite book and couple from this author’s Boston Classics series. Imagining them as grandparents, though – whoa!

Audiobook Review

Karen Grey has done it once again!!! If the first box set of Boston Classics was amazing I the second one was phenomenal. In this box set I felt that I was growing up with it as I am an 80s baby, a child of the 90s and a 2010s and 20s adult. These six couples really brought so many memories to life.
I’d also like to praise the beginning of each chapter for its fun quirkiness. The radio adds, the soap news and the new year’s countdown are great additions to each book.

You Spin Me was a really endearing story of a couple with so many insecurities within that when they finally meet it’s hard not to root for their happiness, not just as a couple but also as a person.

Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer bring us Jess and Cal in a perfect dual narration that brings tears and smiles all at the same time.

Child of Mine was the book that tugged the most at my heartstrings. Being a single mum is not at all easy and the choices Bella had to make for herself and her daughter really show the struggles of many single parents.

Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson narrate Bella and Hal. This duo is absolutely incredible in their story telling and I could feel the pain the characters felt through their voice acting.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch Changes is a short powerful story, full of controversy that challenges mindsets through the years. This story doesn’t only juggle the eternal debate of abortion, but also male nurses, stay at home dads and moms and also fighting for what you believe and having a career, finding time for being a couple after having children and a full time job. Both Sam and Dee go through so much in this novella, they are the ultimate relationship goals! Carly Robyns and Bradley Ford are flawless in their interpretation of Dee and Sam

~ You Spin Me (Boston Classics #3)
This retro slow-burn romcom captured my heart and never let go. Jessica is an actress who is feeling her age when a younger actress wins the role she wanted. When she is cast in another play as a character who is frumpy and unattractive, it goes against all her hard work to be noticed in this industry. One night on her drive home, she calls into a radio show contest. Cal, the DJ, feels an instant connection to her voice, and asks her to call again. They really enjoy their talks and begin to have feelings for each other. Jessica wants to meet Cal to see if he is as alluring and sexy as her image of him from his voice, but is afraid of what he will see. Cal also has his own reasons for wanting to hide behind his microphone. They are falling hard for each other thru their calls, but will they be able to live up to their expectations in person? What happens when their hearts are so invested, but they aren't brave enough to show their true self? I love Cal and Jessica together. They are smart, and funny, and their strength to overcome their past trauma was extraordinary. This is a beautiful, emotional, and compelling story about two people who are both scarred and broken, but working hard to be whole, happy, and loved. Grey touched on some very sensitive topics with honesty and empathy, helping us to understand and care deeply for these characters.
Vanessa Edwin, and Eric Michael Summerer were so perfectly cast to narrate this fun and emotional romance. They completely captured these complex characters and made me feel all the hope, heartbreak, vulnerability, love, and passion they possessed. I was completely mesmerized by their storytelling making this romance even more captivating.

~ Child of Mine (Boston Classics #4)
I loved this sweet & sexy, second chance romance! It brings back all the fun, emotional and sizzling nostalgia of the 80's soap operas. It starts out with a chance meeting, and passionate encounter between Isabella York and Henry Smith. They had a fiery connection, but Henry received a tragic call and fled without exchanging information. Isabella was a tv star at a young age that put her in too many problematic situations. She had to flee her life in NY to find it. But she was left with a gift from the man who she could have seen a future with. Now she is back home in Boston, raising an adorable little girl on her own. When she gets an offer to help on a remake of her most popular show as a child, she is excited, until she meets the producer and the man she never forgot. Now she is afraid he will use her past to destroy her future. Henry lost his father suddenly and rushed home to help with the family business. He has always wanted to get back in the tv business and has taken a job in Boston. He never expected to see the woman of his dreams again. He is excited to work with Bella and is curious about her life and her daughter. The more time they spend together, the stronger their connection grows again, and they have a hard time denying their attraction. When Bella has some family issues, Henry wants to be the one who stands by her and support her. But when her secrets are revealed, will he be supportive, or will he do what Bella fears most? This was such a sweet, funny, tender, and steamy story. I loved how strong and resilient Bella is and Henry made me swoon with how attentive and loving he was.
Narrators Erin Mallon, and Tom Taylorson were amazing as they brought this wonderful story to life. They nailed all the characters perfectly, making me feel all the complex emotions they went through, and made me laugh out loud, cry, and totally swoon. This was a fun, emotional and steamy romance that captured my heart.

~ Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes (Boston Classics novella)
I loved this sweet and spicy romance! We get a glimpse into Sam and Dee's love story that spans two decades. Sam and Dee are passionate about helping women feel safe to make their own reproductive choices at Planned Parenthood. They meet one day when they are both volunteering and fall fast and hard for each other. We check in with them every few years, on New Years eve, to see what happens after the HEA. Their lives are ever changing, and I love how they work through all of their insecurities, difficult times, and many joys, with empathy and selfless love. They are so sweet together and their story is beautiful, moving, honest, and passionate. I enjoyed listening to Carly Robins and Bradley Ford as Dee and Sam. They added so much personality to this story, making Dee and Sam come alive, making this a wonderful addition to Grey's Boston Classics series.

**Audiobook Review**

I’m so excited for volume 2 of the “Boston Classics” series to be released. 2 full length novels and novella make it a great set. Each book brings all the nostalgia out and all my favorite things from the 80s and 90s. Each book is so special and brings real life issues to the front in a positive and profound way.

You Spin Me

This was hands down my favorite book from the series. “You Spin Me” is a sweet, fun and emotional 80’s retro romance that I could not stop listening to as Cal and Jess worked through their physical and emotional scars.

I loved how realistic this story was right from the beginning. Cal’s tragic accident that shaped him and changed who he was. Jess had so many super relatable as a woman that I connected with and I know others will too. Some things were so tough and sad to hear about but Karen Grey did an amazing job of writing it with so much respect. Cal stole my heart right from the beginning and I found myself several times wishing he was real. Jess is someone who I connect with right away and I loved her drive for acting and the big aha moment she had at the end. These two are incredibly sweet together and were exactly what each other needed.

Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer were so perfect as Jess and Cal. This is an emotional story with so many layers and their performances were amazing. I loved the radio promos and commercials before each chapter, that made it an even more amazing audio experience.

Child of Mine

As an 80’s baby and a 90’s child, give me all the nostalgia stories by Karen Grey. Bella and Henry’s story pulled me in from the beginning.

I absolutely loved the timeline and how this story was written. Bella became an instant favorite for me. Her past wasn’t easy growing up on a soap opera in her teenage years to overcome addiction. Bella is an amazing mom who loves her daughter fiercely and wants the best for her. To make sure her past doesn’t affect her. And you can’t help but fall for Henry just like Bella did. His personality and want to be the best Dad he can be wins you over from the start. I loved how there he was for Bella from the beginning. He wanted to reconnect as much as her but also respected her and the friendship they were forming. This series is so much fun and I hope we get more installments.

Erin Mallon was absolutely amazing as Bella. She brought all of Bella’s emotions and humor to life. Tom Taylorson is a new to me narrator and he was the perfect choice for Henry. I will definitely be looking for more books narrated by him.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

“Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes” follows Dee and Sam through several years of their first meeting and relationship. Karen wrote a wonderful story of two people meeting and how they navigated life over the years. Each chapter was a little bit into the future and so relatable. Dee is a strong woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and advocate for herself. Sam is the supportive partner every person deserves in life and I loved him in every part of their story. The story is fun, has heart and isn't afraid to talk about tough situations people and couples go through.

Boston Classics Boxed Set, Volume Two

You Spin Me

Story: 4⭐️s
Narration: 5 ⭐️s

This was a great addition to Grey’s Boston Classics series. The characters were complex and each had a clear arc. Jess and Cal’s romance was sweet and watching their relationship unfold was enjoyable. I love that this and the other stories in the series call back to a time in the past that is further away than some of us like to admit! That setting and what was and wasn’t available then have an impact on some plot points; it makes for some interesting moments that contemporary romances no longer have to deal with. The nostalgia factor in this series is one of its greatest strengths and Grey engages with it throughout in a way that avoided the pitfalls that can arise when a story leans on rather than leans into that trope. The MCs are a wonderful pair and I love the way their relationship develops first on the air and then slowly off. The dovetailing of their anxieties - both related to appearance but for different, yet equally compelling reasons gave some intense layers to the story and to the connection between Cal and Jess.

My only complaint is that the third act from the climax to the resolution was just too quick compared to the build up in the first and even second acts. It took them so long to be in person and then all of a sudden it was the climax and inevitable separation. I just wanted more time with them on the page together as a couple, whether before or after their reunion, which is a testament to the strength of how Grey crafted these characters as much as a weakness in the book itself. Still, overall this was a fun read, especially if you’re a fan of the series.

The audio for this one is excellent. I loved the radio promos as chapter epigraphs. Eric Michael Summerer was the perfect Cal; he brought the humor, vulnerability, and sexiness all in one. It’s the romance H trifecta, and not all narrators are created equal when it comes to striking the balance. Summerer does not have any trouble, and his Cal was everything I wanted him to be. Vanessa Edwin’s performance as Jess was equally remarkable, and perhaps the harder job in some ways, because of the issue Jess wrestles with and how it is slowly revealed as the story progresses. Without spoilers, it would be very easy for the reader/listener to write Jess off for a particular character flaw at the start; however, the way Grey builds the character, coupled with Edwin’s performance provide a bolster and invite us to engage in the journey.

Child of Mine

Story: 3.5⭐️s
Narration: 5 ⭐️s

I have to be honest, compared to the other titles in Grey’s Boston Classics series I had a hard time getting into this one; in fact, I picked it up and put it down several times before finishing. I just didn’t connect with the central couple as easily as in previous books; the h, Bella, often frustrated me and though I enjoyed the H slightly more, slightly is the key word there. The plot itself was okay; the secret baby trope is one that already treads a fine line IMO and this incarnation wasn’t compelling to me. The bright spots were the public broadcasting setting (PBS rocks!), Lilah (who can resist a precocious little?), and Ribsy (such a great nod to the wonderful Beverly Cleary!); the thread of Henry getting to know Lilah pulled and interested me much more than his reunion with Bella. Overall, this is an okay addition to the series and though it should definitely be read, I don’t think it is one I will return to as I have with previous installments. Though a strong audiobook production could probably sway me, as Ms. Grey always organizes audios that add another layer to her characters; so, maybe a well-chosen narrator duo could help me to connect more fully to the h/H?

AUDIO UPDATE: As I suspected, the audio version of this book made a huge difference for me. For this production, Grey has narrators, Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson whom do a really great job adding layers to and evoking empathy for the h and H. Bella and Henry came across much better as I listened to the story compared to just reading about them. Mallon is as compelling in this as she is in all productions and Taylorson, who was a new-to-me narrator, imbued Henry with added charm. Henry’s interactions with Lilah are made even more of a high point in the audio. Overall, the Audiobook makes this story better and is well worth the listen and I highly recommend it.

*I received a free reader copy of this book (Dec 2021) and an ALC of the audiobook (March 2022) via the author. All opinions are my own.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes (Scenes from a Marriage)
Story: 3.5 ⭐️s
Narration: 5 ⭐️s

While I enjoyed the characters of Dee and Sam very much, and narrators Carly Robins and Bradley Ford gave excellent performances,I had the same problem with this novella as I did with “Like It’s 1999”: because I was so compelled by the characters, I wanted more of them.

I get that “scenes from a marriage” is the whole point here, but the snapshot structure of the chapters (same time every few years) doesn’t allow much space for the best part of a romance - seeing the relationship between the MCs develop on page (especially the falling in love bit which is almost invisible in the novella). Here, the reader is dropped into each scene and any growth is told rather than shown because it’s happened in the in-between, in the parts we don’t get to read. The sense of them as a united couple, a true partnership, would have felt more earned had their love story been more than snapshots, or at least more snapshots. There was a sense of their professional selves and their activism (which I love and is a major part of my longing for whole book about them!), but I also couldn’t help wanting the connection between Dee and Sam to be grounded by more than just big moment/major decision conversations (changing jobs, relocating ,pregnancies etc.) and physical intimacy. Yes, those are important, I love that they have strong intimacy and are totally supportive of each other. However, we never see any smaller moments that flesh out their partnership, which would have felt more earned if some of the scenes were about smaller things. I also missed the presence of secondary characters; especially since Dee is the child in CoM all grown up, it seemed like a missed opportunity for her story to take this form of novella.

As mentioned in the intro, the narrators are a highlight here. Both do a great job and I am happy to see them narrating another Grey classic together. Robins is a perennial favorite and it was great to hear Ford again. They both enhanced my experience with the story, and were yet another reason I wanted more of the characters because of they way they played them.

June 2023 I received an ALC copy of the audio and a ARC of the novella via Home Cooked Books. All opinions are my own.

I love the entire Boston Classics series. This box set consists of the third and fourth novels in the series, You Spin Me, and Child of Mine, as well as Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes, a short novella that the author wrote for the Resolve: A New Year’s Anthology for Choice anthology.

You Spin Me was one of my favorites in the series. My full review is here:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

In brief, the main characters are Jess, an actress facing age 30 and feeling insecure about the changes that age will bring to the looks she has always relied on, and Cal, the late-night radio DJ who hides away anonymously behind his microphone due to an youthful accident that severely affected his looks. They forge a deep connection as Jess listens and calls in to his show on her late night commute that helps them both come to accept themselves as they are. The music references and exploration of alt radio and community theater culture of the late 1980's was spot on and brought me right back to my youth.

Child of Mine is chock-full of secret baby, single parent romance. My full review is here:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Briefly, this romance features Bella and Henry who had a brief moment of connection at the wrap party of a soap opera on which Bella played the "bad girl" character. Henry was only temporarily visiting the set. She didn't get his full name, and he disappeared immediately after their encounter due to a family emergency. In the pre-internet days, when you lost touch with someone and didn't have any info on them, there really was no way to track them down, so Bella resigned herself to being the best mom she could be and to raising her daughter alone. When she unexpectedly runs into him 7 yrs later on the set of a new TV show, she's faced with the difficult task of telling him he has a daughter. Meanwhile, the explosive chemistry that drew them together hasn't faded at all over the years. I loved that Bella and Henry were not depicted as perfect people. They both had faults to deal with and both grow a lot in the course of the book as they figure out how to navigate a relationship.

I hadn't realized before I read it that Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes features Bella's daughter Delilah, from Child of Mine, all grown up and a fierce defender of women's rights, so it was great to read that update to her life. Although this novella was short, it packed a big punch as both Dee and Sam are completely dedicated to defending women's rights. Through a series of short vignettes, they navigate all of the challenges that commitment brings in between raising a family and loving each other fiercely.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Audiobook review:

As an overall review, I absolutely adored the setting of these stories. The fact that it takes place primarily in the 80's lends such a nostalgic feeling to the stories. It also feels much more relatable and adds some interesting issues that we may not face now-a-days. The importance of telephone conversations and the lack of information about people being two factors that play a huge rule in these books. Aside from that, the author does an amazing job touching on such sensitive subjects. The care she takes in making sure these issues are represented and represented well is truly appreciated and made the stories really stick in my head for awhile. I am still thinking about how much I really loved these books and the more time goes by, the higher I put these books in my mind.

This whole boxset was so much fun to listen to. Not only is the narration on-point, the production was amazing and really held my interest throughout. The smallest details were appreciated, like the little snippets between chapters...absolutely LOVE. I did not read this as an ebook so I can't compare the experiences, but I don't know how it could get better than this audio. Each and every narrator was so talented and just the fact that each character has a different voice actor is so pivotal to me when binging several books back to back like this.

You Spin Me / Narrated by: Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer

This one was such a good story. Beauty and the Beast reimagined with an amazing hidden identity twist. I really loved the depth of the characters. Both Cal and Jess have deep seeded self image issues and it makes their relationship start so much more impactful.

Child of Mine / Narrated by: Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson

This story was such a sweet single mom / secret baby story. While it was a good story, for most of the beginning I was screaming at Isabelle in my head. In the end, it was nice to see this family's story come to fruition. I appreciated Henry's character most of all and the way he took to fatherhood and truly worked at doing what is right for his daughter.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes / Narrated by: Bradley Ford and Carley Robins

This novella was such a fun way to wrap up the series. The one downside to this story is that there was not enough of it. As with every other story in this boxset, the subject matter was not only relevant and important, it was written in such a way to be respectful and thought provoking. With all that, it still has some fun and some ah-ha moments that hit home.

I highly, highly recommend this series on audio, but if you can't listen to them, at least read them however you can. The subject matter and mental health representation is so relevant to the past settings in the stories, but are also just as relevant today.

🎙️You Spin Me (Boston Classics #3)🩰

This rad retro romcom takes you back to ’88 with radio spots, classic rock references, pop culture nostalgia, and (of course) a smattering of Shakespeare. I love Karen White’s unique wit, imaginative premise, dynamic characters, and appreciation of the arts! Her exploration of body imagery, childhood trauma, and neurodiversity is thoughtfully and beautifully done. Brimming with friendship, heartache, love, and comedy, You Spin Me is an absolute gem!

Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer give outstanding performances as Jess and Cal!! They each brought their A game to portray these complex, emotional, endearing characters. From Cal's radio spots and Jess' auditions to their explorations of the characters' pasts, Eric and Vanessa give delightfully fun and emotionally raw performances.

🎭Child Of Mine (Boston Classics #4)🐈

Babies and Bookshop Cats and Shakespeare, oh my! I have said it before and I’ll say it many more times, Child of Mine by Karen Grey is a wonderful book! I have read it a few times now and I honestly didn’t think I could love it more. Until I listened to the audiobook…The narrators and sound effects add even more depth and charm to this wonderful retro romcom! The sound effects work perfectly with the story and chapter headings!

Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson did incredibly lovely work bringing this book to life. Tom is a new-to-me narrator, and his narration of Henry was flawless. He masterfully gave voice to the charming, ambitious, grumpy tv producer. Tom’s southern accent is smooth and his voice has a smoky timbre. Erin, the queen of romcom, is fabulous as Bella. Erin’s character voices are pure magic in bringing the robust group of ancillary characters to life.

☕️Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes🩺

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch Changes by Karen Grey is a charming and poignant novella about two young, beneficent people doing what they can to better the world. This lovely, quick love story is bound to spice up your holiday season, melt your heart, and remind you of the important things in life. Changes is incredible, life-affirming, and brought me to tears. From the moment of their meet-cute until the very last page, Dee and Sam kept me fascinated. Sam is a doting, vulnerable cinnamon roll, with a courageous, swoon-worthy heart. Dee is a fierce, witty champion of women who wants it all with the quiet, charismatic, nice guy Sam. I loved this story deep in my heart and plan to revisit it many times. We could all strive to be more like Sam and Dee.

Carly Robins and Bradley Ford are a wonderful duo in this audiobook! Their performances are sweet and touching. Carly and Bradley bring Dee & Sam to life beautifully. Karen has written another fabulous love story that transports listeners back to the nineties.

This series pushes all the right buttons for me. Yes, an 80's kid, I can relate to it all! This one takes us on the soap opera journey, with interjections of upcoming plots. You Spin Me: We meet Jessica as she is turning thirty, losing her job and having difficulty finding acting jobs. That in between stage of being the catch of the day or playing the mom is niggling at her and she does not want to lose her youth. One night, she calls into the local radio station to answer a contest, and here her life is about to change. We meet Cal, the DJ and the two hit it off. Nightly phone calls for these two lonely people lead something of a relationship. But when they meet, will it all change? Narration by Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer is spot on! It could not have been cast better. Edwin plays Jessica with an emotional edge. Summerer had me with his first clip. I was laughing and enjoying each one.

Child of Mine: Bella is a child star with a checkered past. She had maintained her career as a soap opera star, but now lives at home over her mother's bookstore with her daughter. She never thought she would bump into Henry ever again. But the stars align, and now she is faced with telling him her secret. Will he ever be able to understand her decisions? What will he think when he learns of her past? And will their budding relationship withstand the outside pressures?
Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson are our story tellers, and with these two, you know we are in for a treat. Mallon voices Bella with a strong and independent sound adding a hint of self doubt and vulnerability. Taylorson has a warmth to his voice that is unmistakably sweet.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes finishes the box set out and it's a book I could easily relate to. Sam and Dee's relationship is enjoyed from year to year. These two meet in the parking lot of a Planned Parenthood where they were both volunteering and Sam was taken with her. Going for coffee leads to marriage, kids and life choices. Each year a new decision or milestone and it's fabulous. With Carly Robins and Bradley Ford they bring out all the different emotions a couple goes through. Maybe because I can see myself in the story, I enjoyed this story immensely and though it was a fantastic way to end the box set.

This box set is a great buy with 2 wonderful romcoms and a novella that can melt your heart, make you laugh, and bring on the steam!

You Spin Me: You Spin Me was one of my favorites in the series. My full review is here:
I loved these characters. They are flawed and real with painful histories, but the story doesn't drag you down too deep. Cal and Jess are both scarred in different ways and they fit beautifully together! The trip back in time is a definite plus.

Narration by Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer is the icing on the cake of this wonderful story! Vanessa is always fantastic, and this is no exception. I love her!!! Eric is fairly new to me, but I really enjoyed his voice, his range with different characters, and his performance. I will definitely listen to him again. Great casting!

Child of Mine: This is a great second-chance romance in the 1980s with a grumpy TV producer and a former child star with secrets who just wants to remain behind the scenes. Both of them have their walls up, so when they meet again the odds are not in their favor. This is well written and touches on some tough subjects in a very tasteful and positive way. Great performances by Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson. Erin is a queen of audio and already on my 1-click list. Tom is new to me, but has a great voice and delivers an excellent performance. I am adding him to my list of favorites to watch for in the future.

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes: Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes is a great novella giving us a glimpse into the life and family of Delilah and Sam. He is a CRNA who works in OB and at Planned Parenthood. She is in law school. They are both champions for the right to choose and the critical need for this often-life-saving healthcare. I love their devotion to each other and to the future. This novella catches up with them over the years. Carly Robins & Bradley Ford do a wonderful job with these characters. Carly is a favorite performer. Bradley Ford is new to me, but I really like his voice and his performance. Adding him to my list.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:

Boston Classics Box Set VII contains You Spin Me, Child of Mine, and Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes (novella). These retro novels are phenomenal.

You Spin Me is book #3 in the Boston Classics series. Cal is a late night DJ who avoids the public. When Jess phones into his show, the connection begins between them. Jess is struggling with her dance career so these two start to find support in each other. This book is based in 1988, so the references are fantastic as well as the music! I find myself rooting for both of these main characters to get that HEA! The narration is just as brilliant as the writing. Eric Michael Summerer (Cal) and Vanessa Edwin (Jess) are both top narrators for me (can we say one-click??). They bring all the emotions, the voices, and the retro vibe to life. 5 vintage stars!

Child of Mine is book #4 in the Boston Classics series. Bella is a single mom, former child star celebrity, and now facing some major life and career choices. She and Henry had a fling which resulted in a baby, but due to lack of info, the daughter Lilah is a secret to Henry. This story gives us the retro 80's vibe (which I love) and all the feels as this little family get to know each other. I was glad to finally get the whole story of Bella as she has been in the other books in the series. The narration was just perfect. Tom Taylorson was Henry to a tee and brought out the swoony southern manliness! Erin Mallon is a top narrator as well and gave Bella the shine she deserved. 5 stars for this duo!

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes (Scenes from a Marriage) is a novella that quickly spans over the duration of Dee and Sam's marriage. They meet on a NYE and the story develops from there on their love, their careers, their family, finances...all the issues of real life. Loved it. Bradley Ford and Carly Robins were magic together. 5 endearing stars!!

This compilation of books in the Boston Classics series by Karen Grey gives you all the feels and romance your 1980s loving heart can handle, and then some.

You Spin Me is a wonderful slow-burn romance between two characters that are so deserving of love, but so afraid to reach for it. Cal and Jessica are both complicated characters with insecurities and personal histories that make connections complicated, but they really bond in such a pure and sweet way on their road to romance. Narrated by Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer, the audio really brings their story, and their complicated emotions, to life.

Child of Mine is such a complicated and compelling story, and even though the "secret baby" trope is not a favorite of mine, Karen wrote it in such a way that you can understand what happened, and feel all the better when the parents reunite. Bella and Henry were combustible from the start, and then separated for so long. It's amazing how quickly they sparked back to life when they got their second chance. Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson were perfect narrators for this one.

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes is a new novella, and this story is totally different from the others. It gives us Sam and Dee's relationship through the years, told with vignettes of their relationship on New Years Eve in different years across two decades. We hear how they change as individuals and as a couple, how they adapt to the times and each other's changing needs, and how their love survives and helps them through it all. Carly Robins and Bradley Ford really made this tribute to the long-term happily ever after come alive.

A great collection.

Boston Classics Vol. 2 is a go-to when I want to listen to a 90s romance.

You Spin Me is my favorite out of the series. Cal may have have had his scars mostly on the outside but Jess had a bunch on the inside. They perfectly matched. So I was listening to this book and before I knew it, it was at the end. This book I wished would go on a lot longer. I wanna know what happens now, do they get married, break up, move in together. I need more. Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer did an amazing job bringing this book to life.

Child of Mine is about Bella and Henry having a one night stand and making an opps. I love this book, I like almost anything that is 80s or 90s. The main characters are the best, I had no problem getting hooked on they're story. Scandal always has that effect. This series is about 80s and 90s love stories and they are stand alones, each story is so easy to get caught up in. I like this author and her writing, I can only hope she continues to write more stories like these. Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson are so soothing when listening to them read a book. They seem to fit these characters, bringing them to life.

Ch-Ch-Ch Changes is the only one of these books that os set in the 2000's. Dee and Sam's work is centered around abortion, Sam being a nurse and Dee being a lawyer. I agree with the ideas in this novella, I'm glad this book is written, it seems like abortion is a taboo subject. This story is too short I wish there was more. Carly Robins and Bradley Ford voiced this book perfectly. I like listening to them read.

Way to go Karen Grey on another set of aweome books.

You Spin Me: This is the third book in the Boston Classics Series. I love the cover. What an amazing and refreshing story! Cal and Jess are wonderful characters. Their slow burn romance is beautifully written, sweet, emotional, and funny. The story has drama, angst, and romance. Hard to stop listening! Vanessa Edwin, and Eric Michael Summerer did a fantastic job with the narration! They are perfect as Jess and Cal, and their voices are very pleasant to listen to. This is a great team author/narrators. The quality audio is great, and the sound effects well done! This is a beautiful and entertaining story, and I enjoyed it! I need more! This series is amazing!

Child of Mine: This is the fourth book in the Boston Classics series. Isabella (Bella) and Henry's story, set in the 80's, is beautifully written, emotional, and captivating. Isabelle, a single Mom, is beautiful, strong, and independent. Henry is grumpy, but handsome and very supportive. They are opposites attract, but they are perfect together. I loved to follow them in their journey to love. Bella's daughter is such a cute and awesome kid! I liked the humor in this story. This is an excellent retro romance / secret baby romance / second chance to love. Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson did an excellent job with the narration. I like this series.

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes: I liked this sweet and steamy romance! Sam and Dee's story is passionate, and engaging. Good narration from Carly Robins and Bradley Ford! I enjoyed it!

You Spin Me
This is a great story with amazing narration!

Child of Mine
📖I loved the 80’s and can relate to so many things in this story. Very fun and entertaining book!

Child of Mine is book 4 is the Boston Classic series.

Isabella (Bella) is a single mom to Lilah; she is doing her best and getting a fresh start to move on from her past. She is a very giving, caring, protective and fantastic mom.

Henry arrives in town looking for a fresh start as a hot shot director. He is single, doesn’t like kids but is a director for a kids tv show.

As the relationship blooms they share their past mistakes, regrets, feelings of failure and lost time. This is a lovely story filled with second chances, forgiveness, angst, understanding and some heat.

🎧 The narrators are totally Rad! Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson are perfect for this book. I’ve listened to several books by Erin and she is amazing in each one. She is so incredibly talented with her voice variations. This my first audiobook by Tom and I really enjoyed his narration. His voice is warm and cozy. They both bring these characters life in the most fantastic way. They bring the book to life with their wonderful narration.

You spin me

As always, Karen Grey drew me into her unique, interesting story. I loved both of these characters. Jessica and Cal make a unique connection over the phone. Both hiding things they don’t like about themselves. I loved the 80s references, the deep emotion, the solid writing and the well developed characters. These narrators did an awesome job of bringing this book to life.

Child of mine

This book grabbed me from start to finish. I was a huge fan of soap operas growing up, so I completely drawn in by Isabella’s character. This was a great second chance romance set in the 80s. Love the secret baby trope. Isabella and Henry got together one night and didn’t see each other again until they began working together on a show. Their journey together was fun, and full of wonderful conflict. This one was well written with a great performance from Erin Mallon. Tom Taylorson was a new narrator for me. He did a great job.

The short novella Ch ch ch ch changes packed a big punch. I not only loved the topics this addressed, but the conflict and characters had me devouring this one during my workout. The narrators really brought this story to life.

I received this audiobook book in exchange for an honest review.

You Spin Me: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Child of Mine: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes – originally I read this as part of Resolve: A New Year’s Anthology for Choice. The audio is only available as part of this box set.

Spanning a decade, Grey gives us vignettes of several New Year’s Eves for Sam and Dee. From their meeting while working/volunteering at Planned Parenthood to life as a married couple and then as parents. As with many marriages – there are hard times, big decisions, and sacrifices made. However their love, laughter, and dedication to each other shines through and they get a lovely HEA.

I loved the narration by Carly Robins & Bradley Ford. They’re a great fit as Sam & Dee and bringing Grey’s story to life. Quick, enjoyable listen.

While I’ve received advanced copies of all of her books, I loved them so much I purchased all the individual audiobooks as they became available. These are my honest reviews.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with Karen Gray's work, and I enjoyed the stories a lot. From the opening paragraphs to the end, I was captivated. I had a hard time dragging myself away from the performances of this box set. I liked that the author has written believable characters with flaws, emotions, and prejudices. I appreciated that all the characters had arcs which depicted changes and growth. I savored the snappy dialogue and enjoyed the moments of humor. I found the stories thought-provoking through the deeper themes embedded into the tales. There were six narrators for this audiobook collection, and their performances enhanced the stories' entertainment. Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer provided voices that made Cal and Jess come alive in "You Spin Me". Erin Mallon and Tom Taylorson were entertaining as the voices for Bella and Henry in "Child Of Mine". Carly Robins and Bradley Ford were good as the voices of Sam and Dee in "Ch-ch-ch-ch Changes". I was given a free copy of the audiobook through BookFunnel from Home Cooked Books, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

This is a nice collection of stories that make me nostalgic. All are set in the eighties or around there and its so fun to see them do or talk about things back in that era. You Spin Me covers Jess and Cal. They are an adorable couple who possibly fall in love because of the radio. Child of Mine is about a one night stand that had results on the plus side. Meeting up years later Bella and Hal look at each other as the one that got away but they have a secret to contend with before anything can happen. Lastly is a novella Ch-Ch-Changes which has us watch a couple through the years.

Overall this is a good collection of stories. I really like how each story has somewhat damaged (in their eyes) character and how they learn to overcome it. My favorite is probably You Spin Me. These two each have overcome huge odds and they only get better from here. I listened to this on audio. Each story has a couple narrators that all do wonderful. They are easy to listen to and bring out that “extra” in the characters.

This boxset by Karen Grey was so much fun! I love all the characters and the stories in this installment! The author does a great job writing fully formed characters and stories with complexity and heartwarming emotions. Her characters were so relatable, and endearing. I have always been a fan of karens classic romance stories .. and this one, just like the first box set, is fantasticly written and narrated . This entire set is an amazing redo, too. Whether you are reading or listening, Karen's stories are always comforting ❤️ ♥️ thankyou ..

This is a good book box set. It features a good variety of stories. I liked to the audio version of this box set and I really like the narrators. They brought the stories to life with their portrayals of the characters.

My favorite of the three is You Spin Me. I was laughing so many times listening to this story. I really connected with the characters. The other two stories are good too. With the novella, I felt satisfied that it was the right amount.

While these stories are all romances, they do also feature important topics. If you like light spice romances with good storylines, you will want to check out this box set.
