Poems of Devotion is a collection of the finest recent poems in the devotional mode, which the editor examines in detail in the introductory essay. The seventy-seven poets collected here demonstrate the ongoing vitality of poetry as a spiritual practice, in the long tradition of poets, psalmists, and mystics from the East and West. This is an anthology that will prove deeply rewarding in the classroom, at home, or in the library of your religious institution.
Luke Hankins is the author of two poetry collections, Radiant Obstacles and Weak Devotions, as well as a collection of essays, The Work of Creation. He is also the editor of Poems of Devotion: An Anthology of Recent Poets. A volume of his translations from the French of Stella Vinitchi Radulescu, A Cry in the Snow & Other Poems, was released by Seagull Books in 2019. Hankins is the founder and editor of Orison Books, a non-profit literary press focused on the life of the spirit from a broad and inclusive range of perspectives.
Excellent selections from a great assembly, and some lovely contemporary finds to be found (mine were Maurice Manning and Amit Majmudar), but there's nothing so like to trip one up in the sacred space created amongst all these standing stones as the third footnote defining Advent or plain old guessing at a poet's intended allusion.... Perhaps some notes at the back with a single page delineating the relevant church seasons? Or just doodle over them on your second reading so they'll not impede your third.
Well clearly, I'm biased, because two of my poems are in it. But there is some classic stuff included from T.S. Eliot, E.E. Cummings, Agha Shahid Ali, Denise Levertov, Yehuda Amichai, and many others dead and living close to my heart.
