I received this book when I purchased a replica of one of the Dead Sea Scroll jars at the Discovery Times Square, New York World Premier Exhibition, October 28, 2011 through April 15, 2012. I even saved the ticket from when I went, January 29, 2012 because it was such a huge event for me - both as a human, seeing the artifacts from some of the earliest civilizations, & as a Jew, seeing some of the earliest written pieces of my religious background. It was truly a moving experience.
Unfortunately, the book was nearly the opposite experience. It started w/a simple typo - spelling "disappear" as "dissapear" on pg. 9 - that told me that this book was hastily thrown together to be sold w/countless faux artifacts.
Other mistakes include instructing readers to look on the top of a scrap of scroll, specifically the right-hand side, to see where a scribe had accidentally left a word out & had written it in above. The error was actually on the upper left-hand side. Perhaps the image was inserted after the text was written, & there was a mirroring that the author didn't count on?
One good element of the book, I think, is that when particular words came up - such as "Yahad" or "pesher" - the author would define them w/each instance. It made understanding the text easier because readers aren't forced to flip back in search of the original instance of the word for its definition.
Still, this was a real disappointment. It was unclear which instance of the scrolls were being discussed, as the author mentioned different findings & there weren't clear indications which scrap of scroll was translated in the text.
