I’ve chosen to post this as a website extra because it is, in essence, authorial fanfic. It’s set after the end of Turning Darkness Into Light, and I think of it as fanfic because it doesn’t remotely stand on its own, nor is it aiming to present the type of conflict and resolution we expect from a normal short story. It’s just me partially tying up a thread that I deliberately left dangling in the novel, but which — at least in my mind — cries out for some kind of eventual closure.
Bear in mind that, as it takes place after Turning Darkness Into Light, it contains MAJOR SPOILERS for that novel. (And also for The Memoirs of Lady Trent, in one specific aspect.) It’s unlikely to carry much weight regardless for anyone who hasn’t read the preceding story.
Marie Brennan is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for material. She recently misapplied her professors' hard work to Turning Darkness Into Light, a sequel to the Hugo Award-nominated series The Memoirs of Lady Trent. As half of M.A. Carrick, she is also the author of The Mask of Mirrors, first in the Rook and Rose trilogy. For more information, visit swantower.com, Twitter @swan_tower, or her Patreon.
Dit is een korte fanfic van de schrijfster om een villain in het verhaal een redemption arc te geven, maar dat was eigenlijk helemaal niet nodig en voegde echt niks toe.
Not every character needs an ending and not every story needs a happy ending. This felt like the author was losing sleep for sending someone to prison and not giving them a proper ending.
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: novellas, redemption arcs
This is a short little novella following Aaron Mornett after the ending of Turning Darkness Into Light.
Aaron is definitely not a character I was rooting for and I didn't particularly want to read about him. However, Brennan sends him on a 10-year trip involving penal work, being aboard a ship, and construction jobs. He ends up in a pretty surprising place and is actually able to challenge his beliefs and assumptions. Aaron stays well away from scholarly work for the most part, which is probably good considering his poor choices previously.
Audrey does show up for a bit toward the end and the two are cordial to each other. Audrey has met with great success since we saw her last and I do wish we got to hear more about what she's been up to and how she and her family are doing.
Overall this is a good short story for those wanting to know a little about what happens after the ending of Darkness. Aaron does improve on himself, and while it doesn't make up for what happed in the previous book, I do think he's been redeemed.
An epilogue to Turning Darkness into light. Can be found here https://www.swantower.com/writing/the...#. The author calls it authorial fanfic. Gives a satisfying wrap up to Aaron’s character.
