Vampire Game #9

Vampire Game, Vol. 9

Rate this book
Life in Pheliosta can be downright toxic, especially if you're friends with Lady Leene. With three very poisonous pills in her possession and thoughts of revenge on her mind, Leene is set to deliver a deadly dose of destruction to all that Princess Ishtar holds dear. There's just one problem: Leene's really not very good at vengeance, and the fact that she's actually beginning to like Ishtar certainly isn't helping matters...

Leene continues to develop, showing a kinder side while trying to follow through on her ruthless plans for revenge upon Ishtar. The two ladies continue to bond in adversity while Duzell’s own relationship with Ishtar deepens. Vord and Ishtar go out drinking where he resolves some of his unrequited feelings for Ishtar (and Duzell). The net continues to tighten around Leene with more of the Zi Alda players becoming aware of her games whom are less forgiving than Yujinn. Diaage continues to play a game of her own in the meantime and a new villain reveals himself behind the scenes.

This volume wasn’t quite as engrossing as those previous. The drinking party was fun, the development of Leene, Ashley, and Duzell were all quite interesting, but other characters were neglected. The storyline didn’t quite keep up the same level of complexity and intensity as the first eight books. Vord’s sudden rebound was a bit too sudden for me. The intrigue, which balanced out the humor and character development wasn’t quite there. Leene’s deepening layers of personality was well done, but other characters felt short changed in the process.

Regardless this was still a very good book which left me wanting more. The artwork was stunning. What was lacking in this volume may return in the future.

For character development, plot, artwork, and my overall enjoyment, this gets four stars.

Who doesn't love this cover? Honestly! I squealed like a little girl when I saw it. I really need a poster of it. Not kidding.
I was half hoping Leene wouldn't use any of the pills, and the other half of me was begging for her to suck-it-up and do her job already. She changes her mind so often it's crazy. I think I'm satisfied with her decision in the end, since she learned her lesson. Usually characters back out and are still the same as before, but that's what I love about this manga. It actually has some meaning and development for the characters, even after original personality development. Signs of a great book.
I was also slightly worried that Duzell would continue to act so calculated and emotionless since he took his original form. Thank The Lord that this volume changed that!! His intense (and growing) feelings for Ishtar are so wonderful. And Ishtar also shares deep feelings for him, even if they are a little different from the typical romantic love.
Leene's changes for the better, the growing love surrounding Ishtar (from more than just Duzell) and the looming threat of death created such an intriguing atmosphere for this particular volume.
Just since I seem to be doing this lately, my favorite part was the scene in which everyone (or at least Ishtar) got drunk. It had both meaning and comic relief by combining the growing tension of Leene's plans with drunk people. Crazy drunk people. Pretty amusing, I have to admit. Vord wasn't as drunk as I thought he was though, because he was able to talk to Falan later. :/
So many ships so many ships!
Obviously I'm a Ishtar x Duzell shipper, but there's also Ishtar x Darres. When Duzell was thinking vaguely of what would happen if he got rid of Darres, that little flare inside of me burned the back of my throat. >:( I ship both of you guys!! I have a sad sad feeling that this is going to be the kind of situation in which Ishtar chooses neither of the main guys and decides to be an "independent woman." For once I want one of my ships to work out. (Haha coming from a crack shipper.)
Enough about my crazy shipping; I'm looking forward to this mysterious new character Lassen. Sharlen and Lassen are stirring up trouble, and with Ishtar in the middle of it, we know this'll get good.

Another fun instalment with love tangles galore!

Vord backs off and turns his attentions to wooing Fallan because he can't work out which Ishtar he loves best - the real one or Duzell.

Ishtar still adores Darres, but just what are her feeling for Duzell? The dread vampire lord is beginning to realise that he may have feelings for Ishtar.

And then there's Yuujell just who does he love - Ishtar or Darres?

And we get a more convoluted subplot as it's revealed that Lucy loves Ashley who loves Leene who loves Yujell.... cripes! It's a real job to keep things straight - but it is worth it.

Leene may be bitchy but in this one she's beginning to have second thoughts - which gives a bit of dimension to her.

A new vampire villain, Lassen is introduced. I'm a tad confused with the villains - Sharlen, Diaage and this new one are shadowy villains largely acting behind the scenes - so far they've taken a back seat to the main action but I'm sure their time will come....

Really enjoying this series - it's something different within the vampire genre and lots of fun, with great artwork.

The series as a whole was good in the beginning. Very funny and intriguing. I love romances where the characters have loved each other forever but have never told each other or something like that. lol The series declines in quality, I think towards the end. There are too many characters in too many places and things get a little confusing.
