June #2

Chasing June

Rate this book
June Laurie has it all—a budding career on the hit crime drama Forensic Faculty, a supportive and perfect boyfriend in her best friend Joseph Cleveland, and hopes of transferring her acting skills to the stage at college. But in a series of plot twists as dramatic as any Hollywood storyline, June's dreams dim with a heavy dose of grown-up reality. Once she starts school at BYU, June's days become filled with classes and the new challenge of dealing with jealous theatre majors who seem determined to give her the cold shoulder. Her happy plans for a future with "the one" take a turn, too, when Joseph dumps her to focus on preparing for his two-year LDS mission. Casting directors and the siren call of stardom beckon her back to California, while an old co-star appears on the scene to confuse things even more. Caught up in the drama of life—the type that has more intrigue, subplots, and unexpected romance than a murder mystery game—June starts to wonder if maybe her life's script might end with a grand finale she never saw coming.

I read Book 1 awhile ago and was amazed at how quickly I was able to jump right back in with these great characters! This series should definitely be read in order to get the full effect of the story.

June is now ready to go to college with her long-time friend and ex-boyfriend, Joseph. As a Mormon in Hollywood, it's a natural choice for her to go to BYU. Her expectations and her reality clash, leaving her disillusioned and lost. Joseph is preparing to serve a two-year mission and really can't have her distracting him from his goal. Meanwhile, Hollywood is calling and it's the chance of a lifetime.

June is a very likable character with a lot of tough decisions on her plate. I love that she's able to stand strong where her values are concerned and that she can look inward to see what changes she needs to make, even though some are a little late. She's just like any other college girl, trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs in life and those feelings are real. I love her friends, with all of their quirks. They seem like a big, unlikely, happy family and their loyalty and dedication to one another is so sweet.

I was swept away in another grand adventure and can't wait to continue on with the next book in the series!

Content: mild romance (kissing); moderate religious elements specific to the LDS church; mild violence (one near attack). Clean!

Another great book from Shannen Camp. I love June. She is such an easy character to love. Fun and quirky in her own way. Joseph is a doll too, but things were different between them. Ryan was a surprisingly awesome addition. Excited for the next book.

Reviewed on Clean Teen Fiction

I loved this book!!! I enjoyed watching June navigate her way through life, college life! The references to my alma mater BYU (Brigham Young University) brought back so many memories. I felt like I was back on campus, seeing it for the first time.

My heart broke a little for June during her moments of feeling alone. I think many of us can relate to feeling lonely, especially those of us who went far from home for college. I wished she would have made more friends when she didn't get the friendship connection with Joseph she wanted, but that's not who June is.

There was a romantic twist in the story that I loved so much but can't talk about because I don't want to ruin the read for any of you. Just know it was romantic and swoon worthy. EEEEEKKK! Let's just say I have a new favorite character.

Thanks June for allowing me to join your ride of freshman year of college, old love, and new love. You'd love this series if you enjoy a good clean contemporary fiction with romance!

This is why I hate starting a series when it isn't done. I was so wanting to just keep reading about June's life. Sigh

So....now about the love triangle

Super good! Fun, flirty, humorous, and cute. Left me begging for more, but it wasn't a huge cliffhanger, just need a resolution.

Moral Note: Clean language, no violence, there is mild talk about waiting to have sex till marriage, but other than that the romance was clean. Some mild drinking/drunkenness from other characters in the book.

I loved this book! Everybody had a fun personality, the LDS was lightly done but standards were kept. June is funny and insecure and her friends are great. I read this book before I read the first so that says something about its ability to stand alone. The dialogue was witty and the plot fun. June goes to BYU with Joseph and they try to end the relationship so Joseph can get ready to go on a mission. And June has to decide if she is going to stay in collage or star in a movie. I like the boy June goes with but I also think there is promise for others and it is hard to decide because they are all so nice and fun and good to her. My only complaint is June's semi-support of Joseph's choice to go on a mission. It should be a bigger deal to her because it is a big deal to him. No sex but a moment where a 'I don't have sex before marriage talk has to take place', No violence, No language.

{This review will go over the content, as in cussing, and explicit scenes.}

I'll be going over the content first. No cussing, not even a minor one. She uses replacement words that aren't very close to the actual version, it's also not very often. Romantically, all that happens is kissing, though she does have to tell her boyfriend that she's not going to sleep with him when she sees signs of it happening. No sleeping with him actually happens though. If you'd rather you or your child to not read about her confronting him about it, skip pages 261-264. You could also read it for yourself first before letting your child to see if you're comfortable or not.

With that said, I highly recommend this book. I love the relationships and the characters so much. Personally, I liked this book more than the first. I liked how laid back yet dramatic it could be. And I can't wait for the next book to arrive <3.

Again, this book was fun and interesting and I felt very invested in the character's lives by the time I was done with it. There were a few things that really surprised me and made me wonder how in the world the author was going to make everything turn out right.

Once again there were a few things I didn't like, but overall the book kept me reading far into the night and made me want to keep going and "living" with these characters. And once again, it was very interesting to find out more about what it's like to be a Mormon.

Chasing June, a Whitney Award finalist in Youth Adult General Fiction, picks up two years after Finding June. June and Joseph are headed off to Brigham Young University in Provo for their freshman year of college. Joseph is planning on only going for one semester before leaving on his mission and doesn't want any romantic entanglements while he prepares, so June and Joseph are back to "just friends."

June struggles to adjust to college life, her roommates are less than welcoming, and she laments that "people seemed to never use their signals when changing lanes and there was a severe lack of racial diversity" in Provo, but life looks up when she and Joseph are both cast in and then three of her friends from Forensic Faculty come to visit, including Ryan, one of the supporting cast from the show. Ryan is ready to step into the void Joseph has left in June's dating life and soon June finds herself having feelings for him, too. Their relationship is sweet and respectful, but June can't help but wonder what this means for the future she always imagined with Joseph.

While still enjoyable, Chasing June seemed a bit more contrived than Finding June. Too many things just worked out too conveniently. One example: Just as their romance is starting to bloom, Ryan and June happen to both get parts in the same movie - as love interests, natch - and happen to get their friends hired on there, too. There's an eating disorder subplot that never gets fully developed and then resolves a bit too quickly and easily.

This book is like the middle Star Wars movie...it just ends! Now I have to wait until Dec 2014 to read more, and on the author's blog there will be a fourth book! ARGH! I love these characters and can't wait to find out what happens. Stumbled onto this author by accident at the library, and now I kind of wish I had found her 2 years from now when her series will be complete.
I will be checking out her other books that are out, and trying to be patient for the ones that are coming.
