A young girl goes on a journey of self-discovery, embracing her paranormal and alluring origin. Family secrets are revealed. A whirlpool of emotions ensues: puzzlement, awe, wonder, admiration, love, pride, and a sense of belonging. Novice readers of werewolf fiction will be enthralled by the girl’s gradual awakening and magical transformations while long-time fans of this genre find themselves captivated by soulful music of wolves in the night, the pure freedom in motion, and the irresistible draw to the beauty of nature. The image of the young wolf, from the subtlest body movements to the deepest recesses of the mind, is meticulously described. That is to say, the genuine spirit of a wolf is captured. Above all, what truly enhances the value of the story is the rich legacy being preserved by the bonding among family members or the community, especially between the girl and her grandpa. Besides the physical appearance, the foundation of human relationships has also been altered, reaching a more intimate level.

This is a great book, and I’m drawn to the beautiful and detailed description of the main character’s emotions as well as her surrounding.

What a wonderful book. I really enjoyed how the wolves were discribed and the history behind them for the Snow pack.
The cliff hanger at the end was crazy!!!! Come on part 2 :)

I really liked this book. The ending is what kept me from loving it though. Because of how it ended the book didn't seem complete. Even with that I'm looking forward to the second book.

3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.

If you've always wanted to know how it feels to shift into a wolf, this is the book for you. Don't expect a plot-filled or action-filled story; more than anything, this book reads like a set-up or introduction, like the actual story only begins where this story ends - it's no surprise, then, that this one ends on a huge cliffhanger.

The character work is solid. The answer to why Evie has always been kept in the dark is a little shaky, but it does hold up. A little more communication would have been nice, but that's a personal preference, I think. The world-building was the real star of this book; the way the world looks from the eyes of the wolf was really great.

(Just a warning: my Kindle edition ends on a very-defensive-bordering-on-attacking note from the author about all the bad reviews she's gotten. It nearly soured me on the book, because honestly, that was not the place.)

This is one of these books that sound better than they actually are.
It wasn´t the worst I´ve ever read but it wasn´t the best either. The beginning was
promising but the story lost me the further I got. A lot of times I was rolling my eyes
so hard they actually hurt and that is never a good sign.
I´m happy I got through but I will not continue this series.
Hope you like it better than I did.

Very good read

It's refreshing to have a shifter fiction story without a romance, and just focus on the story as a whole. I enjoyed this book, although wish the character was a little older. At least the story line was not juvenile. There were some grammatical errors at the worse possible times which messed up the flow which is why I couldn't give it a 5, also this is the beginning of the story so there wasn't really a lot of meat to it. I want more!

Full Speed

Even though this book started out slow it ended in full speed. It began as a coming of age and change then brightened into more of families working together to bring about order over chaos. It was a great read, enough so didn't notice any errors, so now I'll have to invest in book two to see what happens next.

Cliffy

Now that is a cliffhanger. Thank goodness for already published books! This story is just the beginning of new discoveries, cooking of age and family. Throw in guess and rivalries and you have a great story.

Very very good book, cannot wait to keep reading the series. I love that it's a paranormal book, without the massively obvious, story-killing, forced love story, it's just plain and simple, full of the mystery and action of the wolves. love it.

Great read.

I couldn't put it down. Not a romance but still a great read. I will continue to watch for and read the series.

Interesting but a cliffhanger ending.

This is a very realistic shifter book, and yes I'm well aware of the irony of referring to a shifter book as realistic but you know what I mean. Evie is just your normal typical sixteen year old, well at least she thinks she is, she's always liked to run and loves the outdoors but beyond that she's just like everyone else only of course she's not and with no preparation or warning she wakes up naked one morning in the flower bed. She finds herself heading for her grandparents house in the secluded North Woods where she discovers family secrets and a while new world opens up for her.
While I liked the idea of this book and most of the characters for me it was missing something, I found myself skimming several times and had to pull back and while I enjoyed parts of this I'd really no intention of continuing on with this series, and yes it ends on a cliffhanger, I really do hate cliffhangers and while I'd no intention of continuing on the end of the book was good, really good so now I have to decide if I'm going to download 'The Call' one thing I don't like is that there's no synopsis for it just a Hemmingway quote and the information that it's a sequel.

It was just supposed to be a trip to grandma's house. LOL yeah it's kind of like the little red riding hood, but with her being the wolf. Evie's been normal, and all of a sudden she's a wolf now. She is having to learn a whole new way of life. And now we have to worry about cat shifters too. I think I maybe expected Evie to freak out a little more. Evie liked to run, as long as she could remember, and now she dreams of running free. So, in a way, her not freak out moment I guess was because she wanted it so bad! And now she's the legendary white wolf. She not only has to learn this new way of life, she now has to compete. And not just with her pack mates, but the cats too.

Evie seems to get into a lot of trouble. LOL Yeah, she's a teenager, and now a young wolf, but she seems to have more trouble than that LOL.
There's a good pace to the story, and I wish there were more. There's also a major cliff hanger so beware. There's plenty of action, a great plot twist, and some excellent scenery. I will say I definitely want to know what happened in that cliff hanger so I will be getting book two :)

I purchased this as an ebook from Amazon.

This is the first book in The Great North Woods Park by Author Shawn Underhill.

This is a modern adaption of the children's fairytale Little Red Riding Hood.

A wonderfully written book. I liked that they were shifters not werewolves able to change at will rather than relying on the moon. And the way they behaved as pack, more wolf than human, made the story feel more realistic. Looking forward to book 2 The Call.

A strange and resolute acceptance had taken her over, had seemed to pass into her by— somehow from— the wolf’s eyes. She understood that life as she’d known it was ending, but it was not to be feared, was not the end. He had invited; she had come willingly. He had tested; she had stood firm against the power of his gaze.

This was an interesting story about a girl who can change into a wolf. I did enjoy how Evie came into her new wolf abilities and instead of just knowing everything and being the best-of-the-best, she had to learn to control her wolfy self just like every other new changer.

I didn't like the ending. The author intended for a cliff-hanger to entice you to read the next story, but leaving the story the way he did was like when you just stop talking in the middle of a sentence. I was interested enough to want to read the next in the series before I got to the ending, so the story was good. Could have done without the abrupt story stoppage.

I enjoyed the style of writing by this author. However, the dialogue when they were in wolf form kind of bugged me. I understand why the author did it that way, but to me it diminishes the majestic quality you look for werewolves and makes them seem a little dim witted. They sound too much like toddlers to me. I just would have liked the story to move a little faster, have more depth to it. I felt like I was 80% through the book before anything really happened. I did enjoy the rest of the book though. It has intrigued me enough I think I might give the second book in the series a chance.

Evie Brooks loved to run, ran as a child and youth and dreamed of running when asleep. Her mother never told her that at some point in her life she might shift shape and become a wolf. Waking from a fever at her grandparents’ home is a surprise but only the first of many that will occur as her life takes on a new dimension. This was a quick read with an ending that left me wondering what would happen next. This YA book was well written, engaging and the type of book I imagine teens would enjoy reading. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am 62 ;)

This book was just so-so for me. The writing was good, the editing pretty well done (only a few mistakes noted), and the story was good. It just wasn't great and it didn't hold my interest. I liked the pace of the story but I feel like we don't know all that much about Evie. So how are we to understand what type of wolf she may be? I felt like I knew the secondary character, Erica, better. It's a good YA novel for young teens (no graphic violence, no sexual content) but most adults will probably want to pass on this one.

I enjoyed this book and will probably read the next one. I was disappointed in the cliffhanger ending and it was a decent size read, but this definitely not a full 'book', more the first quarter of a book. Lots of getting to know the characters and events. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters and liked the main character. Very good and easy to read, I think a very good book for young adults.

Good, but typical coming of age wolf story. Evie knew nothing of her family history until she began to change into a wolf and then she learns about her family's secrets and the dangers of her new life as a wolf shifter including an ancient rivalry with cat shifters and learning how to control her own nature. My biggest problem with the story was the cliffhanger at the end; itt was cruel one. I'm going to have to find the next book in the series

To be fair this one was well written even if didn't suit my romantic strip. While I could gift this book with 5 stars for the excellent and artful way it was written, the absence of some romantic interest at least, dimmed it's hold on me and thus the three stars. Please don't be put off by this, for I was looking for something to cheer me up with a happy ending and not a story about a young yet powerfull woman-girl through her transformation to a stronger wolf.

I liked the premise behind this story, but felt this novel lacked any real character motivation. I liked the world the author has set up, and found the issues the main character is in intriguing. Will hope the next book will focus more on a specific story problem. This book seemed to be a set up for the story world which has a lot of possibility.

This was over pretty fast as it is only 160 pages long. I enjoyed the story and liked the characters. The author did not add any new twists in regards to the shapeshifter topic. It's a nice introduction to a new shapeshifter series where the alpha's and protagonist's fur is snow-white. The story follows Evie's adventures as a new shifter.
