Unleashed: A Highland Historical Trilogy (Highland Historical, #1-3)

Rate this book
Meet the MacLauchlan Berserkers...

Roderick – He’s death for hire, cursed by a malicious enemy who left him unable to speak. She’s a refugee with a dangerous secret that could cost her life. Outnumbered by thousands, he’s fated to die in battle like so many Berserkers before him. Could the strength of their love defy destiny?

Connor – He’s a mercenary Laird who fears nothing but the darkness inside him. She’s a noble beauty, sold to the highest bidder. He mistakenly rescues her from a fate worse than death, but now she’s his captive. They must battle their pride and their explosive attraction to each other in order to defeat a common enemy who threatens the clan’s survival.

Finn – He’s a nameless bastard, stalking the Highlands bent on revenge and murder when he stumbles on an infant deserted in the snow.
She’s a desperate woman who’s lost everything, including her dignity. They are three of the world’s Unwanted. On a snowy Solstice night, their tale becomes one of blood and vengeance, of love, redemption, and forging the bonds that make a family.

Ooooh...a growly beast in a kilt

I'm a fan of highlander historical romance and an equal fan of paranormal fantasy. So, Kerrigan Byrne hit the mark when the beastly highlander growls out one of my favourite words in romance...

MATE...

Be still my heart. I had shivers up my spine as the huge highlander Berserker comes in contact with his mate and realises he's found the woman who will bring light to his dark days. Add in a few growls, uncontrollable lust and a big and manly physique, I am now a fan of Berserker Romance. Is this a genre? If not, why not? Once I've finished with Kerrigan Byrne's who else will satisfy my new craving for Berserker Romance?

This collection has been renamed and republished (I think, republished, I know it's renamed). It definitely has a bodice-ripper feel to it and I liked it. Sure, I wouldn't like it if this book was sent in 2020, but back then, it does not surprise me that women have little to no choice in their futures.

Each of the heroines is living pretty horrible lives up to the time they meet their Berserker. At first, the women are not sure if they are moving from bad to worse. These "men" appear to have no control over their blood lust and the women feel their lives may be at risk. After the first story, I had no doubt these Berserkers were in control of their blood lust...not so much their lusty lust (wink, wink).

I liked seeing the uncontrollable beast become the sweet, protective and loving hero by the end. It's not all plain sailing for each of these couples and they must learn to trust their budding feelings. If they stay true to their feelings, it will only make them stronger. With a hidden enemy trying to kill them, each MacLauchlan will need to be at their strongest to fight the evil coming.

These stories are HOT!! I was definitely having thoughts of dressing hubby in a kilt so he could ravish me. There are A LOT of intimate scenes but enough story to keep me satisfied.

If you're looking for a bit of *Berserker Romance* in your life, I definitely recommend giving this one a try.

5 Berserker Stars!!

Three novellas. Three damsels. Three Scottish Berserkers.....Irresistible Berserkers. It’s a bit of PRN + historical romance + Scottish highlanders....where can you go wrong? In this case you can’t!!! The stories are short and each packed with a sensual badass alpha. I admit I’d find them irresistible even when their beast emerges.

Our three heroines are interesting, each come from different backgrounds and as different as night and day. Each heroine is strong and very resilient which is refreshing given the shortness of each novella.

The love scenes are hot 🔥. You really couldn't ask for much more in historical romance novellas. These three novellas were fun to read and short enough to keep your attention without dragging on unnecessarily. I really can’t say too much more without giving something away, so I’ll just leave it at that.

*Narrated by the very talented Derek Perkins, who also narrates her Victorian Rebels series which is absolutely a favorite of mine!!!

I have three new book boyfriends. Each novella I thought I couldn't love the next book more. I was wrong. Im not sure who I loved the most. I am thinking maybe Finn. These MacLauchlan Berserkers were simply possessive and so damn sexy I thought I might swoon. I just couldn't get enough of them. I was just thrilled when I found out there was a fourth book. It is so mine!

I love medieval Scotland. There is something about lads in kilts that appeals to me. It's true that mostly their female counterparts are in distress and need rescuing. Occasionally that's not true. I had high hopes for this one. For one thing, the blurb was a bit inconclusive and I was blindsided that this was a paranormal romance. I love all things PNR but medieval Scotland + PNR = nothing exciting for me. But I was willing to overlook this issue and move forward.

The first book called Unspoken is pretty basic. Scared and traumatized Evelyn who has the sight. There are moments of backbone but not much. And Roderick who is a Berserker and a mute. It says he was cursed. There is no backstory, no character building of any kind but plenty of sex. The villain in the end is unknown and should have been included in the said missing backstory but I kind of finished this book thinking that: "Oh, well! Let's hope the second one is better!"

Yeah, no. The second book which is called Unwilling is precisely about that - about an unwilling woman. Lindsay is traveling to meet with her fiance. It's an arranged marriage. In the beginning author tries to allude to some kind of suffering and abuse from the hands of her uncle but there is not much. Then her escort on the way is killed by another Berserker, Connor who is Roderick's brother and when he sees Lindsay he goes well berserk himself and here we almost have a noncon and by the skin of her teeth the author pulls from that. And then it starts as a game of yo-yo.

Oh, his thighs are so thick, but I can't be here so I will escape. I try to escape naked with no weapon. He is so infuriating but still gorgeous. Then when they get to his castle she turns from whining to a manipulative wretch. Oh, if I don't accept you I hold all the power, so screw you as I flounce out the door. Oh, everybody is dancing but no one asks me, why is that? But oh, Connor is asking me to dance so I will say no! Then he implies that oh you are my mate so the only way we could have sex that time is if you wanted it too. Yeah, a complete stranger rips her dress and she already wants it so bad. It's like saying nowadays: "But your Honor! I didn't do anything! She wanted it! All of them B**TCHES do!" That's when I've had enough and had to throw in the towel.

Made me feel a little dirty in the end. So, not my thing. I will pass it and will not recommend it.

P.S. Sorry for angry review but the book pissed me off.

Oh my I am feeling kinda nostalgic right now. I had a huge HR phase when I was in my teens, where I read a lot of old Heather Graham’s, Stephanie Laurens and Connie Masons.

Then I got into a pirate romance phase a read literally the same book ten times, because they are all so friggin‘ similar - it was done. From one minute to another, no more historicals.

It took GR and my lovely GR friends to get me interested in the genre again, beautiful - HAH - covers keep popping up on my time line, raging reviews, hilarious comments, that sucked me in again.

Well enough senseless babbling, I guess what I wanted to say - this was so worth it. I. Am. Back.

First story was wayyy too short, especially because I loved the Hero here - I am always a sucker for disability tropes, and his muteness was rather well done. I would have loved to see more interaction between those two.

The second story was better regarding the story, world and character building, which totally lacked in the first one (it was too short to do any more than a smexy scene and a little babbling). I also liked the heroine better, she was a feisty one and stubborn to a point, where it gets annoying. personally I like that.

The third was darker than the other two, simply because both MCs had rather horrifying pasts, that made the reader suffer with these two. The H was a bit of an ass, he could have done real damage to the heroine‘s future life if they hadn‘t decided to mate, I wasn‘t too fond of that.

Neither of the „end fights“ impressed me or drew me in, they are there, because they have to be and because otherwise the book would get too boring I guess.

I really enjoyed this three little novellas, but at the same time was reminded, why I like a normally long book better - one has to be a real ace in writing, to draw a great story, character, world building in such a short time.
And as much as I loved Kerrigan Byrne‘s writing, it also couldn‘t completely draw me in. I am really curious about the full-length novel, I have already sitting on my shelves.

Another winner for me! Historical/PNR 🙌🏼 Lots of "my mate", insta everything, but still very well written; with surprisingly developed characters for such short books. The third book, UNWANTED was the best of this trilogy for me.

...All three books are available individually and on KU as is this box set. (as of 12/13/18).
Reading Order: UNSPOKEN, UNWILLING, UNWANTED.

I'm on to the next set- RECLAIMED. Happy reading!

PS. For whatever reason, GR is not letting me add the book links. 🤬

This was a great little collection.

Three novellas that all build upon each other.

Crazy Bezerkers and their fated mates find each other.

Super sexy, sexy times and I love it so much.

I am really compelled to reach the next set of them.

Thank goodness for Kindle Unlimited! After reading so much praise for this author, I attempted to read several of her books - but sadly never managed to complete a single book. Instead I skimmed them.

I’ve decided that this author is not for me. Her books seem to be an excuse for writing innumerable sex scenes. That wouldn’t matter if they were good but I’m afraid I like my sex scenes to be emotionally engaging and to move either the plot or the character development on.

In the case of this series, the world building is abysmal. I can suspend disbelief if the author creates the right kind of environment but in this case, I could never buy into it. Not helped by the fact her heroines are 21st century transplants and one dimensional stereotypes.

It’s a shame because I so love to discover a new author who has a huge back catalogue. I’ll stick to Lisa Kleypas, Julie Anne Long, Stella Riley, Mary Balogh, Tessa Dare et al, for my historical romance. They all manage to combine fabulous plotting, great characters and skilful writing along with a dash of humour, historical authenticity and emotionally satisfying sex scenes.

KB is just not my cup of tea - but as she has a huge fan base, that won’t matter. Two stars for her prose and overall writing skills.

I'm a goof and didn't realize this is a compilation of three novellas and not one full length book. I was very confused at first 😆

Novella one- loved the premise! Berserker hero, fated mates, scenting! All of my jamming jams. But it's so short I never connected with anyone

Two: Enemies to Lovers. Spicy but again so short we never get any connection.

Three: Angstiest of the three. CW: child loss.

Overall, a quick read and I love the setups. Would love to read a full length about a berserker.

Kerrigan Bryne never fails. Raunchy Beserker lovers and their secrets rather than scads of battles. Of course there’s always a damsel that needs rescuing or is it a beserker being tamed by an unstinting woman?
Good read when you want something that doesn’t hurt your head to much in the thinking of, rather plain old enjoyment.

This is a compilation of three short, light novels that are "The Complete Clan MacLauchlan Berserkers." I've read more recent works of Kerrigan Byrne and they're better written than these.

Highland Secret - Roderick and Evyln
His presence forged the outcomes of war and established the conqueror from the conquered. Though he subjugated no one, his sword drew the lines of possession in the soil, and then cut down the opposition. A berserker didn’t discriminate. He killed everyone.

Highland Shadow - Connor and Lindsay

Highland Stranger - Finn and Rhona

12/26/2012 -- This was an Amazon Freebie [3 Novella's in a bundle]. I really liked this author and hope she writes more stories, but in a much longer format. I'm not much for short stories normally.

I just listed to this on audible and really enjoyed it! The three short stories are very well narrated by Derek Perkins. In this Americans opinion, he did a good Scottish brogue (but understandable to my ears). The add on price to the kindle version is only $1.99. Totally worth it!

Oooh, vintage Kerrigan Byrne with magical elements? Sign me UP!

This one was a little difficult for me to rate. They're short stories (the first one is REALLY short), which are never really my thing. These were also written early in Byrne's career, so they weren't as good as her more current works. These also focus heavily on instalove, which is usually not my favorite trope (and is one of my least favorite ones), but considering that there were paranormal romance elements in play here (including a mating bond), it worked for me. I settled on three stars, but it was more like three and a half for me.

The stories got progressively better in this book.

The first story, Roderick and Evelyn's, left me a little cold, and I was expecting to love it. A mute hero and a curvy heroine? That would usually be like catnip to me. But the story felt really underdeveloped, especially since Roderick and Evelyn couldn't really communicate with one another except through gestures.

I really liked Connor and Lindsey's story. I enjoy a feisty heroine, and Lindsey brought that in spades. I also felt like there was more development to the story.

The last story was my favorite, and it is definitely infused with all of the glorious angst that Kerrigan Byrne typically brings to the romance genre. Finn and Rhona were both damaged souls, and I loved watching them learn how to love and to love one another. I could have definitely gone for a full-length book for these two characters.

Each story felt like it needed just a little bit more at the end, if that makes any sense, like the stories cut away too soon. But this collection was enjoyable, and I will be moving on to the second in the series shortly.

Roderick, Connor, and Finn. Three brothers, three berserkers, three short stories.

Roderick's story, Highland Secret seemed to be the shortest, and steamiest of the 3, IMO. I didn't feel much of a connection with Roderick or Evelyn because their story seemed to be over before that could happen. I did like the fact that Evelyn was a seer, and from the way they met in the tavern, I know that this would have been awesome if it was more fleshed out.

Connor's story, Highland Shadow, was better. I love the fact that he basically stole his bride, and that she was feisty enough (and annoying) to not take his crap. I will say with the way Rory acted at first, I kept thinking that he should just let the other clan have her. She would have been regretting her actions big time.

Finn's story, Highland Stranger, was my favorite of the three. Partly because it brought all three full circle, and partly because it made me feel during the battle scene. My heart hurt for Rhona. Plus, I loved Finn with baby Ian.

I have never read a story with Berserkers before but I have to say I was totally enthralled! Wow! With the voice of Kerrigan Byrne and the amazing words of Kerrigan Byrne, I was a believer! Each of these three Berserkers had a Paranormal power that when they smelled blood, they went into overdrive and became killing machines. As they find their mates it is amazing how the story plays out. I could almost picture the scenes as they unfolded.. I encourage you to listen to this audible which gives so much depth to the characters!!! Well worth the credit!

Unspoken
I thought this was an entertaining novella by older erotic romance standards. You know, where the language is all gendered—'his manhood' and her 'feminine core'—and velvet over steal, her pearl, etc. But I appreciate that the heroine is described as more rounded and soft that a lot of romance heroines are allowed to be and she is the initiator in the pairing.

Unwilling
I think I liked this the most of the three Maclauchlans novellas I've read. I appreciate a fiery, independent woman. I like seeing their male romantic partner stymied by them. However, the villain is SUPER cliched and the story does suffer from enemies, enemies, angry sex, suddenly in love plotting. But I guess I can't hope for too much in a <100 page novella.

Unwanted
This is the first of the series that I read (somehow coming to them out of order). I was able to follow it admirably well. I was a tad confused on what, exactly, a berserker was (it's quite a ways into the book before it's explained). But that was the only issue with having not read the first two books.

I have a soft spot for supernatural men who are just a tad broken and cling desperately to their love (be it a mate, a wife, an amour, whatever). And Finn is just that. I liked him quite a lot as a hero. I appreciated Rhona too. She's been through the wringer and come out stronger for it. But I'm not a huge fan of female characters written as if they've somehow never discovered their own bodies. Similarly, I cringe when "her womanhood," "his manhood," etc is repeatedly used as descriptions in sex. It seems super limiting.

Regardless, for a 150(ish) page novella it was a satisfying enough read.

I love Kerrigan’s writing and was able to access this content with my Kindle Unlimited subscription (not available on a Apple Books). I got the subscription which allowed me to download this content which wasn’t otherwise available in the Australian Amazon Kindle store and it was well worth it. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Great content like this shouldn’t be so hard to access!

Imagine my surprise when I'm scrolling through KU for a book to read when I come across books by Kerrigan Bryne that I've never seen before. I was overjoyed! I love her books and her writing so was super pleased to find some unread books by her, while eagerly awaiting her next full book release.

This was a collection of three novella's about Beserker brothers in the highlands and their mates. Each story is vastly entertaining. I loved them all equally. Super cute and fun to read. Below is a little bit about each.

Book One: Roderick and Evelyn - he lost his voice when it was stolen from him by another Beserker. Evelyn has the sight and has been used her whole life. She is working in a tavern where she meets Roderick. He protects her from some men at the tavern. She stays the night with him to stay safe from the men who want to attack her. This leads to a sexy night between the two where she becomes his mate.

Book Two: Connor and Lindsay - Roderick's brother and the intended of the vile man that Roderick and his brother were hired to kill. These two certainly set sparks off one another.

Book Three: Finn and Rhona - this one may actually be my favorite of the three. Finn comes to kill Connor and Roderick but on his way he stumbles over a babe in the snow and ends up taking him to the village wet nurse, Rhona, who has had a terrible life. She's sold into marriage at a young age and when her father dies, soldiers agree to take her back to her mother, where they extract a terrible price for "escorting her".

Finn is so super sweet to her. She expects to be treated the same way by him as she was by other men who used her in the past. However, Finn is completely different and she experiences what it truly means to have a man make love to her. Finn loves her to the moon and back and can't imagine his life without her.

That wasn’t going to happen.  If her soul left this world, he would break down the gates to Nèamh to find her.  And if she wasn’t there, he’d storm Valhalla, then Elysium, and finally Tir na nOg.  He’d kill every mortal that defied their love.  He’d defy any God or Goddess who blocked his path to her.

Gah, love these two!

“You are my miracle, woman.”  He pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.  “I love you.  You own me body, heart, and soul.  Even my Berserker.  You owned him from the beginning.”

I read the first story in this collection of three novellas a few years ago and I enjoyed it as much in a second pass. All three of these tales focus on Berserker men and the women would be their mate.

Highland Secret (previously titled "Unspoken" as a single release) was my favorite. The hero here is mute because of a magic curse, boosting his hot factor exponentially. Evelyn is a slightly precognitive barmaid who leans to him first for protection... then desire... then something deeper. Told mostly in her POV, Roderick is made even sexier in his mystery. Oh yeah, and the love scenes are off the chain.

Highland Shadow (AKA "Unwilling") was my least favorite. This one centers on Roderick's older brother Connor. He meets his mate during a mercenary job and his berserker claims her without consulting with him. My issue is largely with the H/h first interaction. Connor slays the men who are part of Lindsay's caravan and he comes upon her at a time when she is highly vulnerable, and the consent between them is very flimsy. And then I felt torn between sympathizing with her when she constantly rejected Connor or to be frustrated with her because I access to his inner thoughts when she didn't. The story was well written and I enjoyed it for the most part, just not as much as the other two.

Highland Stranger (AKA "Unwanted) fell somewhere in between. It features Finn, a berserker sent to kill Roderick and Conner. He finds a baby in the snow and brings him to the closest wetnurse, Rhona. She's led a hard life but in letting him into her home and her bed, she shows him he can have a place and a family of his own.

A solid anthology with interconnected characters. Hit the spot.
