How far will a man go to protect his family?
For lawyer Sam Trask, it is farther than he ever thought possible, even in his worst nightmare.

Because his worst nightmare is about to come true.

At age forty-seven, attorney Sam Trask finally seems to have his life in order. The dark years of too much drinking and self-seeking ambition are behind him. His marriage is solid again. Everything seems finally on the right track.

Until a voice from the past comes back to say hello.

Suddenly, Sam faces a danger more real than he ever imagined—danger from someone who will not rest until Sam's life comes crashing down around him. Desperate, Sam seeks protection from the law to which he has dedicated his life.

But when the threats are turned on his family, and the law seems powerless to protect them, Sam must consider a choice that strikes at the heart of his life and faith—whether to take the law into his own hands.

James Scott Bell is a very good writer of mysteries and thrillers. I really liked his Mike Romeo, Ty Buchanan and Force of Habit series, so I was really looking forward to this book. Unfortunately it was a little too juvenile for my taste.

This one kept me on the edge of my seat! That guy Nicky was terrible; he deserved what he got and then some! I recently saw a Clone Wars episode that had "Jealousy is the road to destruction" as its opening line, and that was definitely the case here! If you read this, buckle up; it's a crazy ride!

I am stuck between 2 and 3 stars. I had a hard time with this book. Most of the time, I just wanted it to be over. This is my first work of fiction that I've read by this author. I eagerly wanted to read this after reading some of his non-fiction books.

First, the characters were all such strong stereotypes. The dialogue was often predictable because of this. And speaking of predictability, so was the story line....it started feeling long (even with the far-fetched plot.) And the ending was so neat and tidy...it didn't feel like it fit. This book just didn't fit into my little nook of what I like. The writing, though, was well thought out and purposeful. That is always something I can appreciate.

This gripping story kept me flipping pages on my kindle until way in the night. Bell is a master at putting his heroes in hopeless situations, leaving the reader fearing what's going to happen next. I felt Sam's helplessness and almost wanted him to break the law to remedy his situation. This is a story that will stay with me for days to come.

Lawyer Sam Trask's life is finally in order. His old drinking and success-at-any-cost ways have been replaced with embracing his family and his faith. Then Nicky Oberlin, an old college classmate, shows up. His first contact with Sam is an innocent enough e-mail. No big deal. Sam deletes the message. After all, he barely remembers the guy, and distractions in his already hectic schedule are not on the agenda. But there's something about the tone of the message that makes Sam uneasy.

And rightfully so. Nicky Oberlin doesn't take "no" for an answer, and soon his behavior escalates into harassment. Sam has sworn to uphold the law and defend the innocent as an attorney. But can the law protect him and his family from someone like Nicky Oberlin? Not when no law has been broken. Which is why Sam is forced to do something he never dreamed he'd do---take the law into his own hands.

Sociopathology isn't a subject often tackled in Christian fiction. But it's a subject that has long fascinated Bell. On crafting the plot of No Legal Grounds, he says, "I began to ask myself how a good Christian family man, a respected lawyer, might react if a sociopath decides, for reasons unknown, to come after him and his family. And what if the legal system, because the sociopath is so clever, is unable to help? And if the Christian man has a vulnerable teen-age daughter who becomes the subject of the evil, what then? What would this father do?"

It's this serious subject matter that gives No Legal Grounds a somewhat darker feel than some of Bell's previous works. It resembles Presumed Guilty closest in tone, since both deal with tough subject matters. But No Legal Grounds hits closer to home. We all have people in our pasts who could hold a grudge against us like Nicky does against Sam. Any one of us could be in Sam's shoes.

James Scott Bell is an expert wordsmith, artfully placing us in the scene. We're not just observing his characters, we're INVOLVED with them. We rejoice in their triumphs, wince at their pain, and root for them to win. No more so than with Heather Trask, Sam's seventeen-year-old daughter. A struggling musician who butts heads with her father's ideals, her scenes are particularly well done as we follow her down a path we know will only lead to trouble. And Bell manages to pepper in just enough slang and mannerisms of today's teens to believably portray Heather and her crowd without sounding like he's trying too hard. Some of the court scenes and legal aspects of No Legal Grounds struggle to flow with the story, but this is only a minor distraction amidst the suspenseful plot.

Ultimately, even though the dark might be darker, the light of truth still shines, a much-loved quality always found in a Bell novel. No Legal Grounds isn't a sugar coated, feel-good piece. That's not what it's meant to be. It's an honest look at one man's struggle to protect his family and overcome society's evils. Through Sam's journey we come to understand how we can overcome ALL evil---through the light of the Truth.

Average guy - wife, 2 kids, good job, goes to church...but what if someone suddenly threatens all that? On top of a rebellious teen daughter, a sensitive preteen son and a law partner pressuring him to settle a smaller case and focus on the "big fish", Sam Trask suddenly has another stressor in his life - an old college dormmate he barely remembers and who insists on inserting himself in Sam's life and dredging up ancient history.

What I like about Bell's characters is that they are real. (Okay, Kit Shannon was a little too good, but overall Bell's got a knack for realistic characters - a balance of bad choices and virtuous ones.) here we have a lawyer who wants to connect with his kids but messes up, a man who wants to use legal means to deal with issues but who at least considers getting a gun illegally, a Christian who wants to trust God but who also takes matters into his own hands when God doesn't seem to doing anything about the threat to his family.

I was right there with Sam all the way - feeling his frustrations, hoping he'd keep his family together, worrying how he'd get out of the next seemingly hopeless situation. Whew! I'm tired just thinking about it all again!

I have had it with James Scott Bell. I kept plugging away at the stack of books of his that I owned hoping that each successive disappointment was a fluke.
I really can't understand why I liked these so much when I read them the first time.
This particular book is so ludicrous, it's ridiculous. The characters are flat and clueless. The villain is creepy to an unnecessary excess. I wanted to roll my eyes at every new "twist" in the climax scene. (Think "Criminal Minds" without the nuance and fairly good storytelling plus sanitized for a Christian audience.)
Also, Bell didn't help himself by inserting frequent scripture passage quotes and a couple sermon excerpts, as all "good" (of course I mean the complete opposite) Christian authors should.
This was the book that pushed me over the edge. The remaining five that I hadn't reread are already up in the donate pile.
I do not recommend this book or this author.

When attorney Sam Trask receives an email out of the blue from someone he knew briefly in college, he has know idea how this blast from the past will affect his present day life. In no mood for a reunion, Sam chooses to ignore the message from Nicky Oberlin and concentrate on more important matters.

Currently, Sam must represent his client in one of the biggest cases his small law firm has ever agreed to tackle. The case pits Sam's against a high-powered lawyer representing a giant insurance company. If Sam loses the case, it could create a bad dent in his career and further destroy his young client's already damaged life.

To add to Sam's stresses, life on the home front has grown more difficult. After giving up old habits and turning his life over to God, Sam struggles with the changes in his life, especially the relationship with his daughter. Years of choosing career over family, has taken its toll as the father and daughter relationship continuous to spiral downward.

Against his better judgement, Sam finally agrees to meet with Nicky after the man doggedly pursues him for a face to face meeting. This meeting results in a series of events that may take Sam and his new found faith to a place he doesn't want to go.

This was the first book I've read by James Scott Bell and it definitely won't be the last. The suspense started from the opening sentence and doesn't let the reader up until the very end. At times the plot seemed a little out there, but Bell made it work with well-developed characters and several calculated twists in the story. The powerful spiritual message that lingers throughout the story should provoke the reader to ponder how much he or she truly trusts God, especially when the temptation to take matters into one's own hands seems to be the only solution. No Legal Ground is a well written, thought provoking thriller!

I'm looking forward to checking out James Scott Bell newest release, Try Dying. This novel will be released October 2007.

This is a Christian novel about Sam, a lawyer, who out of the blue, has been looked up by someone from college, that he doesn't remember. The guy is completely insistent on getting together. Ater meeting for coffee once Sam thinks that will be the end of it. The guy becomes a stalker and starts insinuating himself onto the family. Things go from bad to worse until the stalker must be dealt with. It was so refreshing to read a book with no foul language and one that spoke often of the importance of prayer.

he is a lawyer working on 2 cases, one a olympic hopeful was misdiagnosed and now is blind and in wheel chair. they are offering way low settlement he doesnt want to take

the other case is huge multi million dollar case , his parnter wants him to accept the settlement on the other case so he can focus on the big case but he said no

his teen daughter is getting out of control, drinking, staying out, in a band, wanting to stop school

the college guy knew he had a daughter from a girl he met in college, so he told his wife about her. the man also contacted the childs mom so he went to see her. he saw his son, but his son now 28 thinks the man who raised him (now dead) was his dad

the man also showed up at his little sons baseball game. he got mad and attacked the man, but was pulled off. the man later sued him for assault

the man threatened him but he illegally taped him. so when they did a warrant on the mans house after their dog was killed with poison the judge threw all the evidence out

he got his family to go to san luis obispo to his wifes sisters house and when he went back home the crazy man was there . the police arrested him and he was found guilty and sent to prison where he writes the lawyer letters

the lawyer won his case for the olympic girl in the wheel chair

Sam Trask, a lawyer, husband and father is already balancing his work and family when Nicky Oberlin, a former classmate sends him an email asking to see him. Sam’s busy with a case, a teen daughter who’s going in the wrong direction, a young son who needs his attention and his wife, so he puts Nicky off, but Nicky doesn’t stop contacting him. Sam eventually sees him, and the mystery begins. Sam realizes Nicky has an agenda, but it takes several sick acts, such as killing the family dog, for Sam to understand Nicky is about to take over his life, and he has to stop him. From this point on Sam starts remembering situations from his past that could’ve set off Nicky, who’s clearly unstable. Mr. Bell adds twists and turns the reader doesn’t see coming. Mr. Bell’s excellent writing and storytelling kept me on the edge of my seat as he wove Sam’s past into his present life while Nicky got away with one dirty deed after another. However, Sam doesn’t quit trying to get his and his family’s lives back. At times when he appears beaten and too worn out to go on, he calls on his faith. I highly recommend this book for all who enjoy suspense, excellent writing, and seeing how a strong love and clinging to our faith can keep us going when our world turns ugly.

I'll start off by saying its realllly hard for me to find a thriller I give 5 stars. I either figure them out, or the ending isn't all I hoped it would be etc.

This is my first book by this author. It definitely snuck up on me. It wasn't one of those books, for me, where after chapter one I was like "OH I HAVE TO FINISH THIS BOOK"... but somewhere around page 50 or so I found myself asking "Wow! When did I start caring so much about what happened to these characters" :)

I will say I didn't guess every twist (so kudos to James Scott Bell for that!), tho I did guess a handful of them... and though I didn't guess the ending, I kinda think I preferred the one I anticipated in my mind LOL

He did a great job of dragging out the torture. It definitely wasn't one of those books where you hit the apex and its over in 10 pages... he made you wait for it, and I appreciated that.

I will be trying out other titles by him, so if that says anything... it's worth the read.

I want a refund

I have read other books by this author that I really liked. So I didn't hesitate to purchase this book. Big mistake.
I read a lot of legal and police procedural type books and while Bell is no Grisham or Patricia Cornwell, he usually has some interesting characters and a good story.
This is appalling for an author of his standing. In fact, I'm amazed that it was even allowed to be published and marketed to adults. Although, as I'm writing this I can see the target audience should probably be teens and young adults. And either omit the religious aspect or rewrite as a Christian book. Since you couldn't seem to commit to the point of "being a Christian".
Another point I have to make is that, the writing is so amateurish, I'd like to know if this was something Bell wrote when he was very young or did he even write this at all?

Can't Stop Me has nothing to do with any legal except Sam is a Lawyer. It's a Christianity pretending to be legal thriller. The story and plot are entertaining enough for me to ignore some holes and Christianity theme, at first. But after 70% when faith and pray started to be the main theme of the book without playing any role, I had to roll my eyes. I do get and did the same thing as Sam; turning to faith and spiritual guidance in my difficult time but as a legal thriller genre....too much is too much.
Yes, I did zonked out a bit but I did finish the book so it's not that bad, though....just disappointed.

Can’t stop me

Good crazy read. People do not realize how they can affect someone’s life by their actions. But by all the mentally Ill people just shows this to be true. I never thought just by making someone invisible in your life could trigger a mental breakdown by making them feel as a nothing. Nicky was triggered by Sam and actually was innocent of what he had done. Sam was tested on his faith and I’m not sure how this would have affected me because it was involving his family.
Was a good read I encourage readers to get this book.

Thoroughly intriguing

From start to finish this story has you, the unbelieving reader, in its fascinating and pugnacious grip. Who is this man from the past? Where did he come from? Why is he trying to decimate the life of his very did any former college associate and the lives of his family. No matter what he does he does on the most devastating and evil manner. Cannot he, in fact, be stopped, and just how.

I read this book under the new title: Can't Stop Me. I was quickly immersed in this book's fast-paced and suspenseful plot. The protagonist is relentlessly beset with waves of huge personal crises that he survives through faith, hope, and determination. The writing is rich with colorful and inventive metaphors and similes. Can't Stop Me held my interest all the way through, and I read the whole book in 2 days.

Can't Stop Me...from reading this book

Wish I could give this book more than five stars. It grabbed me from the very first page and never let go. I felt every emotion the protagonist and his family experienced as if they were happening to me. A huge bonus for me? Very few grammatical errors, and those I did find were minor. A very well written, fast paced page turner! Highly recommend!

I liked the author’s series about Kit Shannon which is why I bought a few more of his books. However, I wish I hadn’t wasted my time and money. I am not fan of excessively VIOLENT fiction especially when it’s labeled as Christian fiction. I’m surprised a Christian publisher would print this book and his other violent book, Deceived.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it rather fast. I don’t recall how long but I really like this authors books. He doesn’t use foul language or gratuitous sex in most of his books.
This one is very tense and the villain was really evil and conniving. I’m not going to say anymore because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else.

A very good psycho thriller!

There are some pretty sick people in this world, and Nicky Oberlin ranks right up there. He terrorizes a former college acquaintance and his family with no remorse and turns their world upside down. Lots of twists and turns throughout! This is a book that picks up momentum as you read on.

Delightful reading.

When you start reading CAN'T STOP ME you will find you can't put it down. You follow the characters step by step eager to know what happens next. The novel's verisimilitude makes it delightful reading. In the end you rejoice with the protagonists and happy to see the villain gets his just deserts.

I have read 15 of his novels and loved them all except for the Zombie tale. This one is like all the others in that it is well written but the story left me wishing for more. I will continue to read his work as I said the writing is excellent.

Not his usual genre

It was a story about a crazy man who felt left put in college activities ans then sought to seek revenge on a family. This story was not my cup of tea. All his other booms were great. This one was disappointing.

I had to fast forward

Less than halfway through, I got tired of the religious Christianity nonsense. I got enough from the last 25 pages to find the ending without having to read about praying, "giving it to god" etc.

Unusual

This is not one of Bell's best novels. I have read most of his and this one was just not the same calibre as his later ones. I was sort of anxious reading it for some reason; maybe it's just me.

Well written and suspenseful

I like the way the author kept the reader guessing where the story line was going. I have read several of his books and will read more. Read this and imagine it as a movie, it would be great!
