This is a real story, about a real man and his real experiences.
Joseph LaNier, II wore a United States Navy uniform when he fought for his country in World War II, but Joe fought a war on another front.
He grew up in segregated Columbus, Mississippi, a small town in the deep south where he watched injustice all around him.
His grandfather was a slave. His niece was a member of the "Little Rock Nine". His friend was beaten because of his color.
In 1944 Joe joined the Navy to help his family survive and became one of the first Black Navy Seebees in U.S. history. Yet even as he wore a United States Navy uniform in his foxhole on Iwo Jima, Joe was segregated because of his color.
Joe was told in boot camp: “There are two kinds of niggers. A good nigger, and a dead nigger. We don't want no dead ones.”
Yet today, he does not hate.
Joe has a uniquely positive viewpoint about his war on two fronts. A story that needs to be told. A story that needs to be heard.
Joe: A Real Story
Joe finally gets the respect that all veterans deserve!!
The United States loses more than 1000 WWII veterans EVERY DAY. Soon they will all be gone...
Joe: A Real Story about Joe LaNier II, an African American who was raised on the outskirts of columbus in the 1930s and 1940s. Joe could not able to sit in the front o a movie theater, swim in publc pools, or even have his clothes returned to a store because of the color of his skin. Joe battles racist and unfair rules even when he joins the navy. In this book Joe shares his stories of being on Iwo Jima an island in the Pacifc Thetre. His story continues with him back to Iwo in 2011 and his relationship with Stephan Tubbs the author.I recommend this book to people wanting to know about the unfair times during the great depresion.
