Biography
As a child, TJ thrived in the Arizona desert. By the age of five she was riding horses through cotton fields and by eleven bought her first motorcycle, a Honda 125cc dirt bike. Growing up with teachers as parents meant traveling during the summer. Hiking, backpacking, fly fishing, climbing pyramids, surviving earthquakes, and flying in hot air balloons were just some of her adventures. An avid day dreamer, she would lose herself in mystical worlds and far off places limited only by her imagination. After choosing an academic scholarship over an athletic basketball scholarship, she graduated law school and accepted a position as a Deputy County Attorney. However, prosecuting felony crimes was not as exciting as she hoped, so she traded in her briefcase and the courtroom for a Glock and patrol car. She worked the road as a police officer for five years and now tells officers what to do as a policy writer for a police department. TJ writes from her heart by incorporating her dreams and experiences to create strong, passionate characters who must overcome personal flaws to survive against the challenges of traversing through magical realms, undiscovered planets, and apocalyptic catastrophes.

I GIVE UP. DNF at 50%, reasons listed below.

---------------------

About 40% in and already I'm so exhausted with this book. RANT TIME!

Let me just say that I'm a big fan of the romantasy genre. I love reading about magic ladies and fellas kicking ass and falling in love; so much so that I will put up with a great deal of cheesiness, plot holes, and ridiculous fantasy languages (typical pitfalls) to get my romantasy fix. CL Wilson's Lord of the Fading Lands series contains all three and yet it's one of my all-time favorite series.
So what's going wrong with Caller of Light?

EVERYTHING.

In hindsight, I should have informed myself properly about the premise because I would have avoided the book if I had.
Basically, the main character is Cinderella, but instead of mice, her animal friends are dragons. Her racist vain and royal father & sister invite neighboring king Marek Duncan to court Princess Marissa, who is supposedly about to be the next dragon-bonding messiah. However, upon arriving, Marek falls head-over-loins in instalove with Carina aka Cinderella and chooses her as a mistress instead. Carina is not at all offended at being carted away to a foreign land like a sack of meat, but is honored that the king chose HER sack of meat rather than her sister's. Marissa is pissed and immediately starts plotting her sister's death (stealing dick is a capital offense in her book). Prepare to gasp in surprise when you find out Carina, not Marissa, is destined to be messiah.
Does that sound like a recipe for an original, worthwhile story to you? To me it sounds like a recipe for yet another Mary-Sue shitshow. Make a better choice than I did and stay away from this book.

The POV structure just adds to the problem. The author switches POVs right in the middle of chapters, with not even a page break or a line space to warn the reader (this is the Kindle version. Don't know what other versions look like). Then Shaw feels the need to recount every little moment from BOTH characters' perspectivess. Oh, you're forced to sit through several pages of blushing and gasping because Carina happened to touch Marek's chest in passing? Well get ready, because you get the read about it ALL OVER AGAIN in all its loin-trembling glory from Marek's point of view.

Unfortunately I'm stranded on an island with no TV and no Netflix, so this is my only entertainment. If I don't update, it's probably because I rolled my eyes so hard I got an aneurysm.

Deeply romantic and imaginative

If you enjoy fairy tale adaptations, this might be a fantasy book you want to pick up. the beginning has the distinct feel of a fairy tale with the handsome, unassuming king come to look over the beautiful princess as a potential wife. there is even a clueless father and a wicked half sister. later the fantasy aspects to the story evolve. it is an exciting story full of trials and suspicions, but relatively little angst between marek and carina. marek is everything brave and bold you want in a fairytale hero and carina is a warrior princess worth having in a fight. i enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to the continuation of their story as vicious foes threaten their kingdom. the flying critons evoke this beauty and wonder that pervade the story. total enjoyment. Sorry for the short review. as you can tell, my keyboard is totally misbehaving and cannot display a capital letter for some reason.

It's actually a 4 and 1/2 stars, but since it's a very, very good debut novel I give it 5 stars!
My only problem was the narrative: almost too lirical.
But the story was so interesting that now I have to suffer waiting for the next book! I don't like it at all! *wink*
Who said that it's a cross between Cinderella and Dragon Riders of Pern got it perfectly! Since I loved Cinderella as a child and Pern as a teenager I found this story very enjoyable.
There was no extreme hotness, but there's plenty of heat.
The hero is larger than life, while the heroine is the perfect Cinderella: shy, mistreated by her family, beautiful, good, generous and gifted .
All this could be considered as overgushing, it is not. I just sighted and went all starry-eyed.
I loved the Critons: huge dragon-like creaturs. I would love to fly one of them! :D
All in all it was a very enjoyable pause from alpha, macho men and kick-a$$, whitty heroines. :D
MS. Shaw, hurry and write the next book!

Carina the naïve, and Marek the man who doesn't do as he says...
I liked this at first but there's rot at the center of the story. And then there's the fact that the author never wrote a sequel, but there are a lot of loose ends suggesting that she intended to.

In this made up land, Carina is the bastard second child of a petty king. Another king is coming to visit to possibly court Carina's older, spoiled (and of course evil) sister. But he sees Carina and by the second day he has changed his mind. He won't marry her, but he will make her his mistress. Cause in this world, your father can give you away as a mistress if he likes (but only if she is a virgin!). That was kinda icky, but I figured the author was going for middle ages morals.
...But she takes it too far. She also makes it so that only people with royal blood can have magic and speak to dragons. I understand keeping things old school but in reality, blue blood was never actually 'REAL'. People used to believe you were born better but we all know that just isn't the case.

It made the story feel like a shitty version of 'The Princess and the Pea'

I admit that bothered me through the whole book. Cause of course . SO you spend the majority of the book waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Marek seems like a nice guy and he means well, but he's an idiot.
Three times someone slanders Carina and he believes it without consulting her or taking into consideration the evidence. And each time he mentally tells himself he won't doubt her again.

By the second time, I was thinking he was a bit thick. But by the third time, I was just incredulous and had to make myself finish the story (on full skim ahead). And when he doesn't doubt her, he's just so ga ga over her. From one extreme to the other.
I liked Carina's character, but her kick ass persona was constantly undermined by her doormat acceptance of the shit the men in her life constantly served her.

So no, I wouldn't recommend this one. But the writing was promising, so I might try the author again.

This book started really well, but became very frustrating to read.

Carina is a neglected daughter of a King, who treats his youngest daughter as a servant, because he believes the woman who gave birth to her was a lowly servant. He treats his older daughter, Marissa with reverence, which leaves Carina to seek his love and approval unsuccessfully. Enter a young King Marek Duncan looking for a wife to produce him an heir. He has come to negotiate a marriage with Marissa, but spies a young lady riding a Criton (I suppose they're like dragons) and he's impressed by her riding style, her connection to Critons and when they meet, her alluring beauty. Suffice it to say he changes his mind and instead of choosing Marissa as his Queen, chooses Carina as his mistress (I guess he can't claim he as queen because she doesn't have full royal blood). This doesn't sit well with Marissa and tells Marek that Carina is "tainted" and although he doesn't want to believe her, it causes doubt, which is what Marissa intended.

As Marek and Carina travel with his small army back to his kingdom, they encounter an attack, which Carina shows her bravery, aiding Marek's men in the defense, by using a long bow and even sword fighting. Carina is mortally wounded, but the attacker sees that he was mistaken in harming Carina, and saves her life.

From here the story goes down hill. Carina goes from being a feisty, brave and courageous character, to a simpering co-dependent female that can't function when the man is not with her. We are led to believe that Carina is he next "Caller of Light" which is the person that helps bond Critons to their riders, but once Carina gets to Marek's kingdom, it takes a backseat and the sex is what the characters focus on. I'm ot saying there shouldn't be any sex scenes at all, but it seemed that the focus changed, and from all the action that happened in the first third of the book the next two thirds of the book, was just full of drama and hardly any action. The end of the book was pretty anti-climatic, and I enjoyed the beginning of the book more than the rest of it.

In general, the hardest books to find are good Fantasy Romances. Yes, you can find a lot of post-apocalyptic or Space fantasies, but the good old fashioned kind are few and far between. When I find one, I try to really get the word out so that the good ones get their due!

Carina McKay is the illegitimate daughter of a king. Though he doesn't give Carina the rights due her station, he expects her to always act in the manner of a princess. She gets the responsibility, but not the perks. As a result, her father has forbidden her her one love - the Critons. These beasts are giant dragon like creatures that she seems to have the ability to communicate with and they provide her both companionship and comfort in a world that she doesn't feel she fits into. When her sister is supposed to be engaged to a King, it is Carina that captures Marek's eye and it is Carina that he decides to marry leaving her spoiled sister quite bitter with both Carina and Marek.

I read 'Caller' at the request of the author. It sounded intriguing, and I'm always for helping out a fellow writer, so I agreed. She sent me a free copy in exchange for an honest review but, I have to admit, if I'd run across this book on my own, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. At first glance, it's not something I usually read. Oh, I love a good romance, but the synopsis simply does not do this book justice. It's so much more!

The world TJ creates is so visual that you can actually picture it in your mind. Not by the overuse of descriptive words, either, just by the sheer genius of how she uses those words. Her characters' thoughts and actions present their world in a way that you feel you can get online and buy a ticket. You see the colors and smell the air. Sometimes, you swear you could look up at the sky and see the critons.

What are critons, you ask? They're flying, dragon-like creatures that are ridden like horses and bond with their riders. A caller, the object of the book's title, is a person who senses a bonding when it's not achieved naturally and can call the critons. The last known caller disappeared over a decade before and everyone is anticipating the revealing of a new one. It seems that a caller can only be a pure, royal person so, even though the heroine of the story, Carina, has a way with critons, she is simply the daughter of a king and an insignificant. Her sister, on the other hand, is a pure royal and, feeling Carina is beneath her, goes to extreme lengths to make her miserable and ruin her chances for happiness.

A king from another kingdom, Marek Duncan, arrives to apply for the royal sister's hand in marriage. When he sees Carina, he immediately feels a connection with her and wants her, instead, further turning her sister against her. Ordered to accompany him to his kingdom as his mistress since non-royals cannot marry kings, she gladly goes along to escape her family. Along the way, several events suggest that Carina is not who she thinks she is but doesn't dwell on it as her attraction to Duncan increases.

Carina is a strong character who only needs to realize her strength. She allows others to push her around and believes that she's not worthy of anyone's love. Despite this, she seems to have no fear and attempts dangerous tasks with not much thought to personal safety. King Marek has suffered from affairs of the heart before and doesn't feel that love has a place in his life. He rules his kingdom with confidence and honesty, being fair to all. The hardships both characters have suffered have made them the perfect couple, if only they can discover it for themselves.

This book has everything a fantasy/romance reader enjoys plus, there's mystery, intrigue and quite a bit of excitement. I would really love to read the continuation of this story, sometime soon, I hope, as I'm sure it will only get better. How could it not with an author who seems to create such a world?

Caller of Light by TJ Shaw is a wonderful book. I truly enjoyed reading about Carina McKay & her dashing King Marek Duncan.

Carina is treated horribly by her father & half sister. So without receiving the love she needs from her family she spends her time & showers her love of the Critons, her favorite is little Mira. When King Duncan comes to court her sister, he meets Carina and develops a fondness for her. Before he leaves he has choose Carina over her sister. Of course this terribly angers her sister, she is the favored sister and always gets what she wishes.

Carina & Marek bond on their travels back to Mareks land. There is a sweet connection between these two right away. In their travels they encounter a battle and many other issues they have to over come together. Carina & Marek make a powerful couple that keeps you cheering for them along the way.

I would recommend this book to the fantasy romance readers out there. I know your going to enjoy it. I myself can not wait to see what TJ Shaw might have in store for us next. I would love to read more by her!

The author gave me this book for an honest review.

I was in a search of a good book to read when T.J Shaw sent me an email asking me if I wanted to read “Caller of Light” and write a review. So, I read the blurb and I thought that I should give it a try. Best decision ever! This book is amazing and exactly what I wanted to read!

With a wonderful world-building, with kingdoms, kings and beautiful and powerful creatures, the Critons! This story has everything I love in a book of this genre: romance, adventure, betrayal and shocking revelations. Also, it has a very good characterization.

So, a few words about the story. Carina is a young woman of mix royal blood and her father and half-sister always treated her badly. When she found herself in the company of another king, everything in her life changed and she realized that she has many things to learn!

I really liked Carina! She is an amazing character! She’s brave and strong without losing her innocence. She’s a free spirit and the only thing she wants in her life is to be loved for what she is and to love in return. Her courage is beyond words and her stubbornness also! Everything she did in this book, she did it so others can be safe. She’s a badass in way!

I loved Marek also! Although, he did many mistakes in this story, he’s a very nice person. It’s obvious that as king he’s reluctant with everybody and he can’t explain why he wants Carina so much. I loved the way he was protecting her and the fact that he’s the kind of man who is not afraid to listen to reason!

A very nice story and plot that kept my interest from the first page until the last! I recommend it to all the fans of this genre!

I loved this book. I was HUGELY DISAPPOINTED when I finished reading it to find that the next book wasn't out yet. :) Hugely disappointed in a good way!

The Heroine was strong and intelligent which is my favorite combination and the Hero saw beyond pomp and circumstance, which is my favorite kind of Hero. So I was well pleased.

Plus Dragons... Need I say more? Anytime you can mix Dragons and Romance, it is a winner, but the writing was also highly enjoyable.

4 1/2 stars!

“Caller of Light” by T.J. Shaw is a delightful debut fantasy novel that introduces an excellent new voice of the genre. A beautifully crafted tale that is centered on a world containing fascinating creatures called Critons which exist in a society that is divided into multiple kingdoms vying for superiority. A beleagured young woman, Carina McKay, undervalued and ignored by her father and disdained by her half-sister, seeks refuge with the ferocious winged creatures normally used for transport and battle, despite all opposition. King Marek Duncan, bonded rider of the rare solid red Alpha Criton, FireStrike, is startled to discover hidden depths in the young woman he has inexplicably chosen to be his mistress rather than making her half-sister his queen. Together they face unexpected treachery and danger which only deepens their bond and allows Carina to discover more about herself until they both realize that they can soar to wondrous heights, perhaps even dare to interact with the world where Critons are born.

This was a wonderful fantasy that I sincerely hope will be the start of a new series. It has been awhile since I first fell in love with a certain collection of dragons, particularly an impressive gold and a small but mighty white one and these Critons and their riders remind me of the beautiful bond that held such allure for me. Personally, I was disappointed by Carina’s status for most of the book although I realize that it is just the framework of the society. Naturally, I wanted tangible representation of her worth to Marek and it irked me that matters did not come to a head without outside intervention. That being said, I still enjoyed the rich descriptions of this world, the creative presentation of the various creatures and the tale which presents familiar themes in a very entertaining fashion. I look forward to another exciting tale from this author and hope that it will not be a long wait!

This is a sweet romantic fantasy novel with a splash of adventure. This book leaves open for a sequel but has an ending (no dramatic cliffhanger.)

Characters: The book is written in third person following both Carina and Marek. Carina is an emotionally abused girl by her father and sister, but that doesn’t stop her from finding herself. Although she can be submissive to them, she has strength and courage in her personality. Her one respite is to care for the critons (fantasy creature). King Marek becomes smitten with her and the story takes off from there. By taking Carina and Marek’s point of views, the reader is able to understand the motives for both parties and their decisions better. As with most romance novels, misunderstanding fuels the beginning of their fragile relationship. The “bad” characters are mostly one-dimensional but they have some complexities to them. The reader doesn’t get too much background on them to understand their motives, but they work in the story.

Plot: The plot, at least romantically, is about average in that many books carry the same idea within their own story – misunderstandings, finding out true love, etc. The adventure side of the plot was well written and I finished reading the book in 2 days. It kept my interest and kept the characters moving forward.

Overall, I liked this book. It had a likeable heroine and hero within a fantasy world. If you like fantasy romances with a splash of adventure, you would like this book.

I have to say I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book.

If you like Kristin Cashore's writing, you'll love this.

It's filled with fantasy, intrigue and romance.

I was sucked out of reality and into Shaw's fantasy world.

Shaw's writing style is beautiful and elegant in its description (she doesn't drown you with it like some fantasy writers). Her magical creatures "Critons" enchanted me through her female protagonist's POV - Carina.

Carina was an inquisitive and powerful character. She had always wanted to feel loved by her father but she was never enough and was always an outcast. This was because only half of her was of royal blood. Therefore, her sister, a pure royal blooded female was always doted upon and was always vicious towards Carina. The only time she had love and loyalty was from her Criton (more or less a dragon) named Mira. Mira was also an outcast the smallest of a litter there for the two individuals became fast friends.

Marek was a gorgeous Hero who fell for the half blood sister not knowing who she is, whilst he was promised to Carina's sister for marriage. But the two couldn't put out the fire that burned in their hearts for each other. They fell, and fell hard for each other.

In which Carina's life and Marek's will change forever.

This book has:
Action
Strong Heroin
Stronger Hero
Charming secondary characters
Magical creatures
Villains
And
An epic twist

I loved it!!!!

READ IT, READ IT, READ IT!!!!!!!

This book by all accounts should be amazing, and yet it fall's short in almost every aspect. While I did enjoy the basic idea behind the plot in the end I was sadly left wanting, it's like the stage is set and your leading up to some epic conflict of good and evil only to have the author turn around and say 'just kidding!'

The romance, King Marek goes to court the daughter of another king only to meet her half sister and "fall" for her instead. Only she's not 'pure' blooded, which is a big hang up in this book, and so rather than taking her as his wife he take's her to be his mistress. There are other problems with the whole courting thing but whatever...

So they travel back to his home only to be attacked on there way. Turns out that Carina's sister didn't like being overlooked so she decided to essentially put out a hit on her sister. So there's this big to do with no one checking there facts, though Carina was kinda cool in battle so kudos to her!

And really I could go on but why? Essentially Carina is the "Light" caller for the Critons/dragons, and somewhere out there there is or there is potential for there to be a "dark" caller who corupts the Critons. It almost feels like this should be the first book in the series, but instead it's a stand alone romance with a 'what the heck/that's it?' HEA(ish). So yeah, LOTS of potential here but it falls short for me...

I don't know why I don't read traditional fantasy more often. I always end up loving the books! Always! And Caller of Light was no exception. Shaw builds a completely unique world full of Critons, which are essentially dragons. The Critons bond with their riders but they sometimes need assistance from a caller. Unfortunately the last caller dropped off the face of the earth over a decade ago.

Meanwhile, Carina is our spirited underdog. Abused and treated as a servant in her own house she captures the heart of a King. Her evil half sister is willing to do whatever it takes to sabotageCarina and Duncan's relationship. Meanwhile there's political intrigue and looming threats of war in Duncan's kingdom

The only thing I didn't like, and yes, I know, this is crazy nitpicky, I didn't like that Criton was capitalized. I get that their sentient super special cool dragon like creatures, but you don't capitalize dragon, you capitalize the dragons name. I don't think I would have noticed at all had I not just had to do a global edit for something very similar. But I did notice, and the word criton was used here about as often as the word horse would be used in a western so it just kept poking at me.

However, I just read a long book and my only complaint whatsoever is the capitalization of one word. I think that speaks volumes for how GOOD this book is

It is such a joy to find a book that has everything, one that lives up to its back-cover blurb. T. J. Shaw offers an exciting new spin on familiar story lines that include a touch of Cinderella crossed with Katniss from The Hunger Games.

Carina, our heroine, is the illegitimate daughter of King McKay who secretly spends time with the Critons, the dragon-like creatures who are at the base of the kingdom’s power. McKay also has a legitimate daughter, Marissa, whom he is offering as bride to King Marek Duncan of Stirrlan.

Marek Duncan is not the typical handsome prince, riding to the rescue. He is a divorced King who is seeking a way to strengthen his holdings by forming an alliance with McKay. And since Marissa is rumored to be the next CALLER OF LIGHT, a woman who draws the Critons (dragons), he has come to court her. When he meets Carina on his way to the palace he is intrigued by her.

Since I don’t want to offer any spoilers I’ll simply say that CALLER OF LIGHT offers a world of adventure, dragons, mystery, a handsome young King, and diabolical betrayal. The writing is lovely, the pacing is excellent, the twist and turns are delightful, and the characters are beautifully drawn. I whole-heartedly recommend CALLER OF LIGHT, and will be anxiously awaiting more from T.J. Shaw.

I just wasn’t blown away by this story. It had elements that I like in books. It’s a fantasy, an arranged marriage, and dragons.

Who doesn’t love dragons?

But it also was very surface level. There wasn’t a lot of depth to the characters.

Carina is an illegitimate daughter to a king. She spends her time avoiding her half sister and tending to Critons, also known as dragons. Critons bond to riders for life and there are callers who bond riders to their dragons.

Marek is a king from a neighboring country looking for a wife. His last arranged marriage didn’t work out. He has decided to marry to secure allies, and their are rumors that there is a caller in this country because of the number of Critons.

He meets Carina, is attracted to her more than her sister Marrisa, and decides to take her as a mistress. Carina doesn’t get the title of wife because she’s illegitimate.

Also Marrisa tells Marick Carina is not a virgin, which is a lie, because Cinderella is clearly a virgin. This gives Marick the opportunity to treat her improperly, and his captain and best friend opportunity to try to rape her. Ugh....

I was just disgusted by the attitude in this book.

Carina McKay has never fit in with her royal family. As a bastard child and a servant as a mother, she has never been accepted as a true royal. She also has an unusual connection to the Critons, which her father the King has forbid her to ride.

When Kin Marek Duncan comes to her home to marry her 1/2 sister and full princess, he is instantly taken with Carina. Choosing to take Carina home as his mistress, he quickly discovers he is extremely over protective of Carina.

Although this is a love story there is some very dark plot twists and turns, bloody battles, loss of life and quite a few characters with deeply vile intent.

Magic permeates Caller of Light, with this very original, fascinating, pulse pounding read. I only wish there was more interaction with Carina and the Critons, I definitely craved more of that plot direction. T. J. Shaw imagination is amazing, her world building superb and her characters enchanting. What a fabulous new fantasy.

I received this copy of Caller of Light from T. J. Shaw in exchange for an honest review.

EEEE!!! This is like AHHHH one of the best fantasies I've read in awhile! yay!!! (though I do have to drop it just a half a star for a very personal reason i will get to and I promise its not bad so 4.5)

First warning: Kay so I was totally honored by being asked by the lovely T.J. Shaw to read this for a review - exchange stuff. And honesty is the best policy, so that's that, and lets start this review shhhhhaaalll we?

Song Choice: "Always" by Panic! At The Disco, "That's All" by Michael Buble (Fantasies are a little hard)

First thoughts: This. WAS. AWESOME. I am stupid for taking so long to finish this, I did actually read a majority of this in one day but by the time i got about to 75% through the book I was spent, and quite frankly I got super busy :( I had manage to pick up it up here and there and get to read like a page, but I FINALLY, FINALLY got to finish it and it was amazing! I loved this book. It's a high fantasy - while if you aren't familiar with fantasy style...maybe this isn't the best introduction book - I only say that because maybe its just me but i felt that because i am familiar with fantasy i just got things, but i didn't also feel like i was sitting there reading it going, okay yeah i know all these things... anyways point is OMG AWESOME, there was adventure, kickass characters, suspense, dragon-like creatures, and rooommmmance. :)

Thoughts on Plot: This was awesome! There was this really great pace about the book like i mentioned before i pretty much read this book in a day - unfortunately i was also tired that day and just didn't manage to finish it then. There is always something happening, or something about to happen there isn't a lot of predictable moments in this book, and really the characters have to something to do with that and thank god for them - but i will get to that in a moment. There are these "dragon" like creatures called Critons, and they are super neat creatures. While they play a big part in the plot there is more going on than that. There is a bit of mystery, a bit of moments were you are like welllll duh! but most times i felt I was going, oh...OH WOW! I haven't read as much fantasy as i should but this was definitely original, entertaining is and overall awesome. I really did love this. Like i mentioned there is a lot that happens but it doesn't feel like anything got rushed through, in fact near the end i was wondering when something was going to happen - finally did yay! Okay so now for that pesky half star...I am sorry but the label of mistress really got under my skin, it made my blood boil and made me sort of want to take on the hulking Marek. It's a personal thing, really sorry. seriously though that would really have to be my only complaint.

Characters:

Carina: Oh my god I loved her. While with her father and half-sister she was very submissive and sort of acted like she didn't matter when she was with Marek, and with others she was this lively little thing that was beyond feisty and totally kickass. She didn't give up, nor did she back down. She was one tough cookie and I loved her. She eventually became so much more too even around her father and half-sister. She was vulnerable when I think it called for it but she was very revolutionary which -ahhh sooo much love! It was interesting seeing her break from her shell and being this totally amazing character. A woman of true honor right here.

Marek: Holy hulky hot man. Seriously - okay i guess i have one last tiny, itty bitty complaint, in the summary it makes Marek sound like this totally uncaring guy - i don't think he is, I just think with the pressure of an entire kingdom on his shoulders, and a marriage in the crapper just made him a little elusive. I really, REALLY liked him with Carina he was a totally different guy, he was happier, and just like sort of playful, but still protective, schmexy warrior. He was really awesome i liked him, i liked him a lot.

The ending....ohhh my that ending. I thought... well i can't say... but totes could be another book and i would be totally up for that! But do i feel like it was a super cliffie or anything like that nah. But seriously T.J. give me another book.

Caller of Light by T.J. Shaw is her debut novel, which is a wonderful fantasy novel that totally surprised me. Shaw shows a gift of storytelling that totally pulls you in. Though it was nothing like C.L. Wilson’s Tairen Soul series, it did give me a feel of something similar. She has created a world full of Critons (dragons), and Kingdoms, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Caller of Light begins with our heroine, Carina McKay, who secretly sneaks out in the early mornings to ride her small baby dragon, Mira. Carina lives with her father King McKay, and her sister half-sister, Marissa, who treat her like a misfit, or a poor relation. Her father has been planning to wed off Marissa to King Duncan, as he promotes her as The Caller of Light…..the one who can call Critons. There has been no caller for over a decade. Critons bond with their riders, but it is the Caller of Light who help guide the Critons.

King Marek Duncan, our hero, is on his way with his guards to meet his intended wife, when he spots from afar someone riding a Criton. He tries to follow, especially when he sees it is a girl riding the dragon. Unfortunately for King Duncan, he cannot catch up to the girl, and continues on to meet King McKay. Since he is early, the King and his daughter are out, and it is Carina who must greet Marek Duncan, who arrives on his Alpha Criton, FireStrike, a beautiful red Dragon. Carina is shy, but finds herself attracted to Marek (who does not tell her he is actually the King), as she shows him the land. Marek finds himself enjoying Carina’s company, which is soon interrupted at the arrival of King McKay and his daughter. Though they try to send Carina off, it is Marek who says he would like her to attend dinner with them all. During his short stay, he finds himself not liking Marissa, and makes a quick decision to take Carina as he his mistress. Since she is not of royal blood, he cannot make her his wife, but he cannot let her go either.

The story moves on as Carina leaves with Marek and his men back to his kingdom. The saddest part of the story that brought tears to my eyes, when her father would not let her take Mira, which broke Carina’s heart. On the way home, they come across danger, a major battle for their lives, but due to Carina’s archery prowess, she helps save them. Marek becomes closer to Carina during the long travel home, and it is a beautiful romance that ensues. He begins to realize that Carina is more then what her family thought she was. When they get home to his land, the Critons treat Carina specially. In time, Marek will explore more about Carina, and her infinity to the Critons. At one point, there is another danger to Carina, who is saved by a special Criton, who is now transitioning to a full fledged Dragon.

There were so many wonderful parts of this story…The Critons, Marek and Carina’s love story, the matriarch Criton who comes calling, and Carina who must rise up and try to save Marek.

I loved the characters, especially Carina and the swoonworthy Marek. I enjoyed watching thier romance become the real thing. The Critons were a thing of beauty. T.J. Shaw has created a wonderful debut novel that I would recommend to everyone. I cannot wait for the next book.

This debut fantasy read from an author quickly speeding to the top of many an auto-buy listing thoroughly wove the reader into the kingdoms of King Marek Duncan and King Regin McKay. Divorced King Marek is searching for a new bride and King Regin gathers suitors for his beautiful, eldest daughter Marissa by touting her as the first Light Caller of the Criton (dragon whisperer) in decades.

For Marek, marrying Marissa would strengthen the tie with a neighboring kingdom and the Light Caller ability would strengthen the power base of his kingdom. Regin would get an extremely valuable bride price. The problem is someone else has caught Marek's eye.

Travelling to the McKay kingdom, Marek meets Carina. Regin may be the king and her father but her mother wasn't the queen. Regin will never love or treat Carina like his daughter. Nor will Marissa love or treat her like a sister. To her family's surprise, Marek strikes up a fond friendship with Carina. Marek begins to think he's found what he's sought in Carina, much to Regin and Marissa's displeasure.

Jealous, vindictive and downright mean, Regin and Marissa do what they can to make Marek regret his decision to choose Carina. Unable to accept Marek's decision, poisonous seeds of doubt are planted in an effort to destroy any possible happy future Marek and Carina may have together. A malicious campaign is launched before Marek and Carina reach his kingdom beyond the Bridal Lands.

Marek can't ignore all the whispers though his heart tells him he should. Shattered bonds, a dangerous, treacherous journey, distrust and mistreatment are the fruit of the poison seed.

Wisps of fairytales are remembered from the outset as the read engages the reader with clearly drawn characters, their strong 'voices', 'personalities' and distinct definable traits. I was a huge fan of Marek being very fallible and not always making the right choices. I loved watching Carina stumble on her way to becoming strong and not realizing it. Even Sampson's human frailty was apparent.

Unfortunately this read is a stand-alone but this reader is anxious to continue adventures in this land. Not quite perfect but astounding fantasy with all the necessary elements: romance, danger, intrigue, betrayal, comeuppance, forgiveness, lessons learned and the promise of more. Ms. Shaw's talents in creating characters to cheer for, adore and want to know more about are appreciated. I really look forward to her next offering.

4.5 stars

This is the first book I have read from this author and indeed I believe it is the first book published by this author. I will continue to follow her whether she continues this series or not.

Carina McKay is the half royal daughter of King McKay known in this series as “half blood”. He has a full blood that he dotes on. Carina, he treats like a servant. King Duncan has come to King McKay to court the full blood daughter, but ends up meeting Carina first. It is believed that Marissa (full blooded sister) is the next “Caller of Light”. The Caller is someone who can call to critons. Critons are, from what I can understand, essentially dragons. King McKay’s land has an abundance of unbounded critons which is why it is thought to be Marissa and this is why King Duncan is courting her. But he can’t resist the half blood sister and ends up taking her for a mistress. Half bloods, and especially Carina, are treated poorly. Everytime Carina turns around he finds an enemy: her father, her half sister: Marissa, the King’s captain of the guard, King Duncan’s mother. But for all this she does make allies and they are good and powerful allies.

There were times I wished Carina would stop getting pooped on, but alas this was not to come to pass. I did read this book in one day. It was very good and kept my interest, but I was also having a lot of contractions and trying to rest so I found myself with an abundance of time. I think my favorite part was all the emotion pent up in Carina’s past. She believed herself lower than everyone else because that is how she was treated and that pain came out clearly in the story. She apologized for things beyond her control when she felt unworthy. These parts brought tears to my eyes.

One more thing, that cover is so hideous it would normally stop me from even reading the summary. I'm pretty sure King Duncan has a mullet!

This book was provided in exchange for an honest review.
