A city girl. A small town boy. A summer they'll never forget.
Spending the summer at her Grammy's in Lilac Bay, Devon, is city girl Alexis 'Lexy' Edwards idea of hell. That is, until she reconnects with her childhood friend, Jen, and meets Alec Johnson. Alec is the kind of guy Lexy knows she needs to stay away from. He's the village flirt, ridiculously hot and very dangerous to her self control. But there's a problem – she can't seem to keep him out, even though she knows he'll break her heart. As Alec slowly strips away Lexy's defences and the two embark on a summer romance she never wanted, their feelings grow to more than either expected. But nothing lasts forever, and reality intrudes. As her world is shaken to it's core, Lexy's self made prediction comes true when she discovers she's spent six weeks surrounded by secrets. Kept out by her family and the only guy she's ever trusted, she falls apart. And when Grammy tells her that 'you might not end up where you wanted to be, but you'll always end up where you're meant to be,' she has to figure out if her meant to be is back home in London, or if it's been in Devon the whole time.
Emma Hart is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty novels and has been translated into several different languages. She first put fingers to keys at the age of eighteen after her husband told her she read too much and should write her own. Four years later, she's still figuring out what he meant when he said she 'read too much.'
She prides herself on writing smart smut that's filled with dry wit, snappy, sarcastic comebacks, but lots of heart... And sex. Sometimes, she kills people. (Disclaimer: In books. But if you bug her, she'll use your name for the victims.)
My fifteen year old self would have adored this sickly sweet story of first love. My old cynical self found it cheesy and saccharine. Confusingly - for an old parent-aged person like me - Lexy's entire family seemed determined to pimp her out to the town's man-whore, throwing them together at every opportunity. What was that all about - she's only 17. Probably a more suitable story for a younger reader but not for me I'm afraid.
I believe that every book has an audience out there that will enjoy it and one that won't. My objective in this review is to help determine which group you would be in regarding this book so you know if it would be a good fit for you. This book was a miss for me.
This book was not for me and might not be for you if
1. You don't like boys who are players and like to play with girl's hearts. The hero, Alex, is this type of guy. He even kind of laughs with his best friend about how he has played around with girl's hearts in the past and broken them. Granted, this all changes once he finds the *one* which leads me to....
2. You don't love the tired trope of manwhore changes his ways because he meets the *one*. Also, that *one* is in no way actually unique that you can discern.
3. You find guys who constantly wink at you and use non stop cheesy pick up type lines more annoying and creepy than charming. Actually, all the guys seemed to do non stop winking and cheesy lines, even the side characters.
4. You don't enjoy pet names, especially shortly after the guy meets the girl. This one goes hand in hand with number 3 for me. In this book it's "Princess".
5. You don't buy into a guy feeling justified in playing with all those girls and hurting them because apparently they deserve it. This is more implied than implicit. But again and again the hero Alec talks about how Lexi is different and doesn't deserve the same treatment he's given to every girl before her. *blech* Apparently Lexi is super special and thus doesn't deserve just a night of sex and then a brush off. I can not respect a guy who doesn't respect girls, even the average and not "super special" ones.
6. You don't like girls who are whiney and bitchy to everyone because their family made them spend part of their summer break with the family at their grandmother's.
7. You don't like spoiled girls who think they are super special because they are from a big city and have college plans.
8. You don't like girls who make mountains out of mole hills. That is Lexie's specialty throughout the book. Even the big climax is over something completely ridiculous. Lexie's angst is silly and over the top.
9. You don't like completely manufactured angst.
10. You don't like a story where most of it consists of a girl developing feelings for a boy only to realize them, deny them, realize again, deny them again, realize them again, try to deny them again, realize them again, try to push them away......I could go on for while, just like in the book.
11. You don't like weird guys popping up making bizarre advances on the heroine at beach parties and refusing to back off just so she can be saved. It gives her an excuse to be watched over by the guy she's trying to avoid.
12. YOu don't like creepy older brothers who the whole family laughs about how he is constantly sleeping through the entire female population and can't be satisfied with one girl.
13. Etc, etc
There are a lot of books like this one and a lot of people love them. I do think there is an audience for this book it just wasn't me. Use this review to decide if it might be for you.
Did you ever have a sudden awakening that life doesn’t revolve around you? Lexy had that moment in a most painful way and it all started the summer she went to the country with her family, determined that at almost eighteen, her life was over.
She is serious, not boy crazy and thinks she has her life on track to reach her goals, but Lexy learns that life can be full of surprises, both good and bad when her grandmother decides to play cupid with the town bad boy, devastatingly handsome Alec. No matter how hard she tries, Lexy is falling for the player, the charmer and she doesn’t trust a word that falls from his kissable lips until she learns there is more to Alec than meets the eye and just maybe his reputation was a little overdone. When tragedy strikes her family and brings Lexy to her emotional knees, she discovers that everyone, including Alec was keeping a secret from her and Alec takes the brunt of her wrath, even though he was honoring another’s wishes.
Has she just been fooling herself that what they had was special, that once in a lifetime love? Is she ready to give up the boy she loves or will she realize that there comes a time when everyone needs to grow up and it doesn’t happen the day your birth certificate says you are an adult.
Emma Hart’s NEVER FORGET is written through the eyes, maturity and heart of a pampered teen, so keep that in mind when reading! Lexy is the perfect heroine to play that role, caught between true maturity and thinking she is all grown up. Alec seems more mature, but even his angst levels ran high. I do have to say that Emma Hart did a marvelous job creating the voice of youth, the angst of young love and the complications it entails. Her handling of the tragedy was very realistic based on her characters and as heartbreaking as it was, it became a much needed turning point in Lexy’s life.
A well-written tale filled with all the trappings of leaving childhood behind and entering young adulthood.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. And it goes like this:
A city girl. A small town boy. A summer they'll never forget.
Spending the summer at her Grammy's in Lilac Bay, Devon, is city girl Alexis 'Lexy' Edwards idea of hell. That is, until she reconnects with her childhood friend, Jen, and meets Alec Johnson. Alec had me....
Everything about him was hot. The imagine is forever branded in my little mind. I have way too many book boyfriends now I am gonna have them all confused. He may of been the town man whore but sometimes it takes just one person to turn it all around and that's exactly what happens when Lexy shows up. She doesn't want to make friends or have a boyfriend or fall in love but sometimes fate sweeps in and knocks you on your butt and everything you fear takes a back seat to the things you cannot fight.
Grammy, well she's a hoot. I loved her. She had me constantly....
She had a plan all along the little sneak.
All of the characters were all written, even the man whoring brother Bing. He and Lexy may of went at it but they weren't really mean they always said things Ina joking manner but he was very protective of his baby sister and I thought it was sweet. The banter between him and his family was hilarious.
My heart broke for Alec knowing the things he faced before and knowing why his life had shaped into what it was but he just needed someone to fall into was all and thanks to Grammy he got just that.
Wasn't a angst filled story but sweet and lovable although at the end there was some drama to keep you busy. I understood why Lexy was upset but I think she may of been a little hard, but I don't think she was counting on Alec fighting and that he did. Wohoo!!!!
He's not perfect. I'm not perfect. But you know what? That's okay, because I've realised that love is seeing other's imperfections, and loving them anyway.
Ahh this book, I honestly cannot stop this giddy feeling I have right now. I unexpectedly took a chance on this book and boy am I glad I did. In my state of depression today, this book did what all feel-good NA/YA books should do, make me forget my troubles and focus on the good things in life. This is a book about first loves, loyalty, the meaning of true friendship, and how the bonds of family is what brings people together.
"You're an addiction," he continues softly, his breath fanning across my lips. "But I like it. You're the one addiction I don't want to ever give up. You're the one addiction I won't ever be able to give up."
This book made me fall for each and every character, and I can honestly say that I loved both the hero and heroine. Both of them showed their flaws sure, but also showed their strength of character. Both turned from scared characters unsure of how to open themselves to the possibility of love and turned into characters who knew the meaning of taking a chance on love. I luckily did not have a moment of uncertainty on any of the characters, and I felt relieved that I did not get annoyed with any of them. From her womanising, loveable, sarcastic older brother to her loud, confident quirky childhood friend to her open, funny, heartwarming grammy.
I trace the pattern of my tattoo on it, the heart, the lines through the centre and the dots on the side. Unconditional love. Forever. Always. Infinity.
Is this book cliched, overly predictable and a carbon copied NA/YA novel.. most probably. But there is something I just loved about this book. From seeing the journey our girl makes from being the self-indulged spoiled party girl, to knowing what life is really about.. love, family and friends. This is a coming of age story where we see the true meaning of what it means to love someone. Not merely a puppy-dog romance, but a real, honest forever kind of love that some people can only dream of.
''Never forget how I held you under the stars, how I showed you there's more to life than just shopping and weekend partying. Never forget everything we've shared in the last six weeks, all the smiles, laughter and everything else that made us as close as two people can ever be. I know I won't. I won't forget it, okay? So you don't either. Never forget that somewhere along the way you became the only thing worth waking up for. But most importantly, never forget how much I love you. Never forget about us.''
Definitely a must read for all those who want to read something to lift their moods. A great summer read (especially in this heat!) I give this book, a solid 4.5!
I press my mouth to his neck, my breathing a crazy rhythm that matches the movement of our bodies. And I know. I know a part of me will always be his. "Yours. Always."
“Sometimes in life you meet one person that changes the way you think, alters your perception of life and nothing else matters apart from them.”
Alexis is a city girl from London, forced to spend a summer in the country, along the bay of her gram's home. Alec is a small town boy, a local surf hottie who spends his free time helping a very feisty old woman. Some would say fate brought Lexy and Alec together, but nope, it was strong will of a very wise old woman whose life would be complete if only to see her granddaughter fall just once! Lexy and Alec have an easy friendship...make no mistake he wants her. She is young and naïve yet smart to want more than a summer fling. But what happens when the bad boy proves to be more than his reputation? When Lexy finally "loosens" her grip...Alec is there...a constant burn deep within her. She and Alec create beautiful passion with gentleness and respect. The progession of Lexy and Alec is very pure. The author does a fabulous job of recreating all the right "first" feelings associated with falling. As in any young love, the angst of the read is fairly predictable and not really as big of a deal as is should be, but Lexy is just 18! When she feels betrayed her world stops...and again, she is back to questioning her "life" plan....but what if... “You have to learn that you might not end up where you wanted to be but you'll always end up where you're meant to be.” Lexy must be something special...because her parents, her brother, her wise all knowing grams, and her first love all want the main goal for her to find her true happiness. In the end, it was a sweet summer of love and laughs, family and new friends. Again, all brought together by a fabulously unabashed old woman!
What ever happened to guys actually wooing their ladies & getting to know them before declaring them to be their bada bing girls?
Im just so sick of insta love. Maybe if the characters explained why the fell madly in love with one look - but they never do! I miss books that have actual romance in them.
I liked the character of Bing. He was funny & obnoxious as hell. But his love & protectiveness of his kid sister was really endearing.... and I know Lexy felt the same way.
Grammy is hilarious. I hope Im that cool of a grandma light years from now.
Alec was dreamy & I liked him & Lexy together. This was an ok story with a predictable ending. I give it 2 Stars
A huge clusterfuck. It's written poorly and is so boring. The main characters are annoying a ruddy possible when in a book. Absolutely hated it, I don't recommend.
A cute read about first loves, unexpected heartbreak and summer romance that doesn't have to just last the summer.
Lexy won't admit it to her parents, but she's glad to be back in Lilac Bay to spend the summer with grandmother. Little does Lexy know that a summer away from busy London is exactly what she needs. Reconnecting with her old friend Jen, she meets Alec Johnson, who just also happens to be helping her grandmother with work around the house. She's not going to deny that he's good looking, but she also knows that he's a player and she doesn't want to get involved. But they're both drawn to one another, and player Alec realises that Lexy is a girl he doesn't want to just toss to the side like everyone else - she's a keeper. When she's rocked to the core by family heartbreak, her world falls apart as secrets are revealed, secrets that Alec was involved in keeping. Lexy knows that whatever happens between the two, it'll come to an end when summer does and she heads back to London. But maybe, this romance doesn't have to be defined by a season.
Emma Hart is slowly becoming a new obsession, and this book helped cement that a little more - it was a super cute romance mixed with a little heartbreak. Of course, there's so much more to enjoy about this book - family dynamics and friendships.
I've read so many American-based contemporaries that it did throw me a little that this book takes place in England, but I thoroughly enjoyed this location change. The setting of Lilac Bay was super cute, complementing the cute romance we follow throughout the book.
Lexy's grandmother was a hilarious character and a grandmother that everyone would love to have - I'd totally spend my summer hanging out with her! Actually, all of Lexy's family was cool, much different to other contemporaries where the main character has kinda a sucky family. It was great to see that family dynamic alongside the romance and friendship.
This was such a cute read and I really liked Lexy and Alec's relationship development. If you're a contemporary fan, you definitely need to check this book out, as well as Emma's books in general.
“Every turning point in life has a significant moment that accompanies it. It changes relationships, feelings and perspectives, altering the way you see the world around you.”
When I read Never Forget, it took me back to my childhood and high school days. From Westlife to Good Girls Go Bad to Stuck on You by Stacie Orrico. I mean, seriously, Emma Hart is the coolest author ever! *claps*
Anyway I mentioned that because there's this line in Good Girls Go Bad where Leighton sings "Boy you're dangerous, yeah you're that guy I'd be stupid to trust, but just one night couldn't be so wrong.. You make me wanna lose control!"
And that BOY my friends, is Alec. Yup, he's the hottie and his appearance also screams TROUBLE. He's from a small town but don't underestimate him just because of that. Girls will surely worship his body and I’m sure they’ll also melt at the sight of his dimples. (Yes I really imagined Alec as that kind of guy) Lexy even mentioned that “the guy is a walking advert for sexiness.”
And oh, did I mention Alec being a playboy?
Alec: "Like what you see?" He winks again. Lexy: "About as much as I like vomiting after too many drinks on a Saturday night," I quip. Alec: "It's okay, Lexy, I don't mind you looking. You can touch if you want." The challenge is in his eyes and I look upwards as if anyone up there could help me. Which is silly, because clouds can't help. Lexy: "I'm not a touchy person, but thanks for offering."
I had a love/hate relationship with Alec at first because 1) I didn’t know why he was so cocky and confident and 2) why did he think that he can just go around breaking girls’ hearts? But I’m glad that I got to know him and what the reason was behind that façade.
And Lexy’s character was also relatable in a different kind of way because she’s the city girl who likes to party the night away with her friends and who will choose to stay at home rather than spend a whole summer with her family and grandma.
This story has dual POVs and I’m sure that many readers out there will love this fact. :) We always know what’s going on in Alec and Lexy’s minds and boy oh boy, Emma Hart sure does know how to get into a guy’s mind! Look at this:
“This girl is feisty as hell and it's doing crazy things to my brain... And my body. Not to mention the way she looks in a bikini, all that toned muscle, sexy curves and flawless skin. Fuck. I hook my arms round my knees. I feel like a damn thirteen year old with his first hard-on over Megan Fox. … It's a pain in the ass when all I wanna do is chuck her over my shoulder, take her behind the rocks and show her what she's missing out on."
And of course, Lexy also had her moments. *winks*
"No alcohol for the little under-age girl then!" He fist bumps Alec.
"This 'little under-age girl' is a city girl who could probably drink your sorry ass under the table," I retort. Jen giggles next to me.
Alec and Lexy’s relationship was not the ‘instalove’ type and I very much LOVED that. It’s more realistic that way and it made the story more beautiful. We all saw the hesitation of Lexy about Alec because ‘he’s the guy she’d be stupid to trust’. But Alec was determined to prove her wrong. And that stage in their relationship was very heartwarming because you can see that it’s there – the connection and the affection, they just have to learn to trust and have faith in each other.
As for the other characters in the story, Lexy’s mom (I loved her especially when she told Lexy about the bada bing person *happy sigh*), dad and also her big brother, Bing, I loved them all. Even if they were a crazy family, they still knew their limitations and knew when to have fun and when to be serious. I loved Lexy’s grandmother the most because of her wit and wisdom. Yes she is funny but she also just… knows about certain things. Maybe it’s because she already has many experiences because of her old age but in Never Forget, we will all see the power that Lexy’s grandmother has. I think that her love for her family is what I admired the most about her.
Here, we will also meet Jen, Lexy’s childhood friend. For me, they go well together. It’s like they were meant to be friends from the very beginning because they’re both witty and even though they have their differences, they still manage to balance each other.
I also liked the fact that Never Forget was not just a love story. It’s also about reconnections with people you never thought you would cherish so much. I have to admit that there were ‘oh-I-didn’t-see-that-coming’ moments but there was also a little voice in my head that said ‘oh-I-know-that-this-will-happen’ thoughts.
Never Forgetis a must-read for romance readers out there. A story of love, loss, redemption, hope and forgiveness that will surely warm your hearts.
Some of my favorite lines/quotes: “Meeting Alec has changed everything, and it scares me."
“Sometimes in life you meet one person that changes the way you think, alters your perception of life and nothing else matters apart from them.”
“You can't control everything, and matters of the heart are one of those things. The heart wants what the heart wants and you gotta let it have it.”
*I received an ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review. This, however, did not influence my review in any way.*
Wow.. spending the summer with her Gram.. not a fun summer for Lexy! I think it was last place she wanted to be. It happens just like that what you "want" verses just what you " need". Lilac Bay might just be a small town, but it is where Lexy reconnected with herself. She smiles, she relaxes and she gets comfortable in her own skin.
Alec Johnson.. Yep you know the leading man is good. If I can just say his name and think.. Hmmmm, swoon.. and I see hearts floating. Alec of course is that guy, good looking to a fault, player, no girl can keep him. He's everything Lexy does not need, but boy oh boy she wants him. Regardless if she does not want to admit not! Alec wants to prove himself to her, and the love story begins. I loved it! I love a wild boy hell bent on love once he finds it. Alec is everything a good romance book boyfriend should be and more! lexy is strong willed spit fire, together they are just perfect! Grammy adds the perfect flair and laughter, I want her to be mine and come have a vino with me! The characters blend with grace and make a fabulous addition to the wonderful story. Reality sucks sometimes, growing up is hard, and sometimes choices are made and we have to live with them. Learning all of this can Lexy deal? Can she do this and forgive what she feels is wrong? Can Alec really be what she needs... Grammy gives her advice she needs to decide if she will take.. and where will this summer lead her.
"You have to learn ...that you might not end up where you wanted to be.. But you'll always end up where your meant to be. Maybe Alec is your meant to be"
This story takes you on a emotional high and low and back up again. It's a wonderful coming of age love story with a great family bond/struggle story too. Jen the wonderful BFF and Bing.. the pesky older brother. I just enjoyed the story all around. I cannot wait to see what happens ...
Ok I finished this book way too late last night so decided to save my review for today :) I received this book as part of the Always Remember Blog Tour as I hadn't read the previous book this being the first in the series.
I'm not going to list any spoilers as I find when I'm looking for books myself I like to read the book not knowing whats going to happen.
This book is set in Devon :) not so far away from where I live & I have visited the likes of Barnstaple, Illfracombe & Plymouth so I could picture in my head where they were which I totally loved & also loved the fact that Emma Hart is an English author, don't get me wrong I love many American & other authors but it so refreshing to read a book in what I like to call the English Language :)
A City Girl. A small town boy. A Summer they'll never forget.
This says it all... you can't beat a holiday romance, I loved this book & couldn't put it down... I literally read it 4 hours over a day. Alexis 'Lexy' Edwards is your typical city girl dreading the fact that she has to spend her summer holiday in Lilac bay, Devon wiv her Grammy, mum, Dad & brother Bing.... in comes Alec who is extremely hot, the village flirt and very dangerous to her self control and so the story begins......you will have to read the rest for yourself ~ get it, u won't regret it, this book is so easy reading and I totally loved it hence why I have given this book 5 stars :)
Whats next for me ~ Holding On (Memories 1.5) Lexy & Alec's novella & I can't wait to find out what happens next in their relationship :)
This was a great read. The story was simple and pure. It was a well-written love story about Lexy and Alec. The characters were well-written and well-developed. I had a blast reading about each of them. There was comedy, love, fear, and family in this story and I thought it was a great understanding of love.
My favourite character was Alec. He was described amazingly. I would call him the ultimate boyfriend if I could. He may be a man whore of sorts, but the true person was able to hold me captive when he meets Lexy. He opens up more and more as the story unfold. Lexy was my second favourite character. I found her funny. I felt bad for her as she has no desire to make herself some friends or fall in love.
I thought the way Alec came in proved to her that love does exist and that she should not let go of the things that she can have. I loved Grammy. She was hilarious, probably the best comedic relief of the book. Lexy's brother, Bing was interesting to read about, but I loved how he was always protective of Lexy. The relationship of Lexy and Alec was brought on by Grammy, and for that she is the best in my opinion.
The story was engaging, pure, sweet and well-thought through. I loved how Alec fought for Lexy. It proved to me that he is a good guy and that people need second chances. Grammy is the one who helped him win Lexy. I can't wait to see what is in store for the next installment. I hope there is more Lexy and Alec. Overall, an enjoyable read.
Never Forget by Emma Hart is a super sweet coming of age romance that will leave you smiling, hopeful and wishing you were 18 again....just for a little while.
I liked that the book flipped between Alexis (Lexy) and Alec's point of views. Being privy to Alec's point of view made him more endearing and I found myself cheering for him more than I would have otherwise. Alexis (Lexy) is a great character. She is smart, beautiful, funny, vulnerable, feisty, stubborn, and sweet all rolled into one. What's not to love about Alec? He charmed me. Period. I'm used to a little more angst in male characters than what Alec showed. But with the small window of a summer to work with, I can see why more of that was not drawn out. He still represented the potential heart-breaker well.
Being American, I loved the Britishisms I came across in the book. I believe they added to the book's charm.
Lexy and Alec's story is timeless. I can envision the pair in any time period from the 1940's and beyond (minus cell phones and computers). All the elements for a great young romance are there. I imagine Lexy's Grammy had a similar tale of when she fell in love. There is something about a summer romance at a sleepy beach town. Classic.
I've given a thought about how many stars I'll give to this book, and YEP! 5 stars it is :)
Summer romance, Family, Friendship, Lost..
It's all in this book.
So, here comes Lexy going to Lilac Bay and will spend her summer with her Grammy. Which, if not for her Gram, wouldn't really wanted to go there. Then, on her way to her room over the window, saw this guy. Alec, gardening her Gram's plants meets Lexy.
And that's where it all began
Lexy, who thinks education is the first priority and Alec who just wants a one night with Lexy ended up being together.
It's just really sweet how two people can change in a short span of time and it really makes me beleive that there is true love
Everything is romantic and entertaining. It's a page turner! What more can I say?
I was in kind of a funk with all the young adult books that are out there right now so I started reading this not knowing if I really wanted too. it was sooo good. Alex and Lexy end up falling for each other th summer she went to visit her Grammy. Alex is the player and always has the girl. Lexy wanted nothing to do with him (shocker) That summer Lexy found herself, true love, and true friendship!!! her Grammy arranged the summer for her to watch Lexy become an adult and find true happiness. her and Alex went snorkeling, surfing, hung out with friends the whole summer. the end was so sad with her Grammy and her and Alex fought about the decisions Alex made but then made up!! Loved this couple together and can't wait to read more of them in holding on.
Teenagers aren't stupid. They read as many "adult" novels as those specifically for children. They are old enough to grasp subtext. They don't need their hands held.
So why do so many young/new adult writers think they have to dumb it down for their target audience?
Never Forget is an unoriginal story with an obnoxious protagonist and a painful lack of substance. The writing is both simple and flawed. Formatting and punctuation errors distract from what could have been an almost passable book. As it was, I stopped reading a little over halfway through.
I just couldn't get into this book.... first of all... in the first few pages the characters notice each other's eye colors..... through a window where they were clearly too far away from each other to be able to see such detail. He was working in the backyard in a garden, she was looking out a bedroom window. Ummm whaaat?? They barely know each other-- I wasn't feeling any chemistry-- and suddenly he wants her to be his "FOREVER GIRL". Alright, I won't keep going on, but I could not continue. Not for me.
I was given an ARC of this book. I will post a more detailed review after it's released, but for now let me say that Never Forget is a wonderful, contemporary story about first love and self-discovery. Excellent characters, witty dialogue, and the chemistry between the two MCs was off the charts.
At first, I couldn't really relate to the characters. But toward the end it got better. Gram pretty much made the story. I will continue to the read the series. Hopefully it will get better.
