Young, beautiful, thirty-year-old Emma Wilson arrives by taxi in a small tourist town at 7:55 a.m. Her clothes are filthy, her appearance disheveled. She has no purse, no wallet, no luggage, but her back pocket is stuffed with hundred dollar bills. She's also carrying a credit card belonging to Jack Russell, the town's most eligible bachelor, who hasn't been seen for a month.

Claiming to be Jack's fiance', Emma immediately moves into his expensive lake house. The local sheriff gets a bad feeling that only turns worse when he discovers Emma's ID belongs to a dead woman.

After a few character development books that didn't contain quite the same level of plot twists and thrills as early John Locke books, December 2012 has been a revival for the popular eBook author.

First came the second Dani Ripper novella, Promise You Won't Tell, which thrilled with its unexpected turns and revelations. And now comes Kill Jill, an all-out comic action and crime outing in Locke style, that doesn't necessarily feel like the start of a series, but more of a standalone title, though characters from the larger Locke-verse do make appearances or get referenced in one way or another, like little Easter eggs for the faithful Locke follower.

Without the constraints of making this new set of characters into the stars of their own series, Locke enjoys the freedom that provides him to pull out the stops and really allow his plot to wind in unexpected directions.

As with the best Locke reads, about a third of the way through, just as you think you're getting to know who these characters are, the unpredictable pops up and tears away at everything you thought you knew with the unvarnished truth of the matter.

Even so, the novel flows well and makes for good, quick, light entertainment. About my only complaint comes in the last half-dozen pages, when themes he's been working into the action of the story for most of the work are blatantly stated in the text.

It's an artisan's concern, of course, that won't bother most readers; yet the decision to go blatant at the end indicates a hint of confidence Locke lacks in his own ability to get certain points across through character action... so here's one reader willing to say, "John, I knew what you were driving at before you put a neon sign above it.

Relax, John, and have fun.

As for readers, most of you should have loads of fun with Locke's 1-2 end-of-year punch with PROMISE YOU WON'T TELL and, now, KILL JILL. Enjoy.

John Locke does a lot of things right in his writing and that is what made this book another fast read. The dialogue was wonderful and snappy, and there was something going on all the time--the action never stops. But there were some things that made me give this book 3 stars, the lowest rating I have given one of his books.

*************************** Spoiler Alert**************************************

The big cliffhanger at the end of the story bothers me. I don't need everything tied up with a big red bow at the end, but I need to know my characters are on their way to happiness. The fate of the main characters could have gone either way for them at this point. I see what the other reviews mentioned about the characters sounding alike, although I don't think these sounded anything like Donovan Creed. I just think that their basic premise is the same. When the smart-ass, good looking guy is hanging in a dive strip club and comes upon a woman who is too good looking and too smart to be stripping for the club, it reminds me of many scenes from many books of Locke's. And I can take gore and sadistic bad guys, but some of the stuff did not make sense to the plot. I still don't understand why Bobby would keep some of those people locked up just for fun--seems like too much work, even if he likes to torture people. As for funny/weird scenes, I always like the way Locke does this, but I still don't understand Fanny. She has some extreme weirdness going on that is not totally explained. Maybe I missed something?

Overall the story went fast and there was a good plot, but I think some things got in the way of the action and story. I will definitely read the next Jack and Jill book but I am hoping for a little more straightforward and not so much to get sidetracked on.

One thing you'll have to remember to do while reading this book is to breathe! Every single page is packed with action - its literally non-stop. You will forget to take a breath but you'll have to just to get through it. It has loads of surprises - loads of fun and loads of heart-stopping action. If you're familiar with and like any of the John Locke series, Kill Jill won't disappoint. There are a couple of main characters in this story and you'll like both. How Locke comes up with these story lines is anybody's guess - I'm just happy that he is so inspired!

UPDATE:

Locke continues to fascinate...with his unique, pulp style writing. Some books are great (especially the Donovan Creed series). Some just an ok read as Locke begins to open new doors and new characters into a series that seems to broaden into a much wider series, beyond Creed, and Dani and the rest of the crew...characters we've come to love and who always seem to make cameo appearances throughout the many other novels in which they are not featured.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Continuing with my pursuit of the lone Hero (see reviews for Joe Pike novels, John Rain novels, and Jack Reacher novels) Donovan Creed is probably the most unique character I came across (Dani Ripper is an off-shoot from the Creed novels).

I'd never heard of John Locke until I received my Kindle DX in the mail. Locke made his fame and fortune self-publishing his books in the Kindle world. For the Kindle, his books are ridiculously inexpensive (around $0.99 to $1.99). I was surprised at what I read and hooked from the start. Unlike my other series books, however, there is a difference in the books in terms of ratings...so I have not given them the standard 4 or 5 star ratings across the entire series.

First of all, the books are short but packing a powerful punch, a mixture of excellent humor (left me laughing at the insanity of what I was reading) and the grim reality of a hero who kills people. Lethal people introduces us to Creed, the business he is in, his side-kicks and his insane relationship within his own world and certainly the world most of us live in (let's just say Creed is not fit to live a normal life and does not understand it). Get ready for a roller coaster ride and, above all...enjoy! You will find that towards the end of each book you will be filled with disappointment that the ride is over...and almost certainly you will hunt down the next Donovan Creed thriller.

I love John Locke's books ... Usually. They are cheap, they are funny, they are obnoxious and ridiculous and so much fun to read. I have read every single Donovon Creed and all the Emmett and Gentry books as well as the Dani Ripper books, BUT this one I wasn't crazy about.
It was fast paced like his others and had some witty dialogue but (if this is possible) it was too over the top even for me. The mobster Bobby ... It was just too much. And these men that fall in love over a nice set of boobs and a good lay ... Really?
Anyway, I finished it quickly but was disappointed wasn't really an ending but a --- to be continued (ugh).
I'll continue reading Locke's stuff, but not this series.

Kept me glued until the end...I had to go along for the ride because I couldn't anticipate anything that would happen when I turned the page...so many surprises, twists and turns from beginning to end.

Some of the scenes made me laugh out loud while others had me shaking and quaking, wondering what would happen next and how I'd live until I found out.

Few books among the thousands I've read have had me feeling this way so John Locke may as well be in a league of his own. Looking forward to the sequel...

Kill Jill introduces new characters, but also gives us a little bit of insight into one of John Locke's characters from a previous (or future, depending where you're up to) books. Once again, i had trouble dragging myself away from this book (i have to sleep sometime). The same unique twists and plots i've come to anticipate, but this one severely left me hanging ... definitely need the next installment.

This is the second book by Lorke and already, he reminds me a lot of James Hardley Chase where sometimes the good guys die and other times, the bad guy is actually the good guy. That aside, Kill Jill is a good read. Doesn't feel too much like a novel but more like a movie script. This however doesn't mean you're not super excited.
The first pages were grabbing, a few pages in and I was doubtful but once the book moves into motion it's hard to drop it.

What a great book short but totally impossible to put down. John Locke delivers again with a great set of new characters being introduced with promise of some old favourites to join them. My only disappointment was the ending very abrupt, not a cliffhanger just stopped, but I can only presume that the next one will follow straight on and I'll also be on my Kindle very soon.

The first half of this book was great; typical John Locke. The second half left me wanting more which I am sure is to come. I actually read Kill Jill before Promise You Won't Tell so I see the connections between the two and the influence of Donovan Creed. Still a good read if you are a fan of John Locke.

This one was a little different for me. Like all of Locke's books, I enjoyed it, but at times it bugged me. I couldn't really get into this character the way I have with Creed, Dr. Box, and Dani Ripper. And yet, I love the way hs books tie together. Wondering where Fanny came from? You'll soon find out. Looking forward to the second one.

It felt weird reading this book. The tone was off for a John Locke book. And the ending... well, there was no ending. It wasn't even a cliffhanger. It was like Locke just chopped off the back half of the book.

Really disappointing.

I usually love John Locke books but this one was awful. It had to be the worst he's ever put out. At first I thought it should have been a freebie, introducing a new character and all...now that I've read it, I would prefer that it had never been written, at least that I had never read it.

I loved it! All of it? Well until John Locke wrote, The End. I went, WHAT??? That's not the end? Seriously? I hope he has a plan. Maybe we'll see Jack and Jill in a Donavan Creed or Dani Ripper novel and then we'll get a real The End.
Otherwise, great story, a bit gory but great.

Jim thought this was a well-written book and he liked it, but was not happy that there was no ending. He rates this one 4.2 stars. I read this one on 8-25-14 and found much of it quietly hilarious, but wasn't thrilled with the ending, either. I still rated it 4.4 stars.

This was a disappointment compared to the other John Locke books. It had the tests that he is noted for but the characters weren't as developed.

Another suspenseful, plot twisting book by this author. Will look forward to the next book in the series by this author.
