The small town of Maxville, Colorado is harboring more secrets than Kota Riley ever imagined. Hunting, partying, and hanging with the guys has made up the most of her simple life, but as she nears the end of her time in Maxville High, she finds herself in want of something more. Something new. Unfortunately for her, she gets her wish the beginning of senior year when a whole slew of new faces come Waltzing into her life. Literally.
The Peters are a family of professional ballroom dancers, deciding to descend upon Maxville and take their most talented to a series of competitions from California and then hopefully to Italy. Unbeknownst to Kota, however, is that this is just their cover. The family's dark secrets are the real reason behind their arrival, and their mission:
Stay under enemy radar Gather the information Make the switch Get out undetected
It would have been a success, but when their two youngest get mixed up in a taboo romance with Kota and her best friend Sue, things get nasty for everyone.
Driven by boredom and the disturbing effect the mysterious Peters have on her, Kota starts pushing her way into their secrets without hesitation. She soon finds herself surrounded by everything she never knew existed and the blame is all on her when she risks the safety of her friends and family to discover a truth she was never supposed to see.
Life is not always what it seems. Kota (short for Dakota) found this out the hard way, her Senior year of school. She started it with her normal routine – her and her mates out hunting, to pay tribute to the great white wolf, but little did she know that everything was about to change.
On her first day, she was surprised with two things – a family of new kids, two of which were very attractive twins, and the announcement that their school was taking part in a dance competition. She wasn’t too keen, until she came to find out that the attractive guy she had her eye on, Connelly, was one of the professional dancers she could be paired with.
Over time, Kota and her best mate Sue, got very close to the twins. Sue and Ivan, the other twin, instantly liked each other and began to spend more and more time together. Kota, who took things a little slower, was starting to build a great bond with Connelly.
Then it started happening. Weird things, some unexplainable – Wolf attacks, the White wolf appearing, a shadowy flying creature and the new family’s on again/off again attitude towards her, but that wasn’t the worst of it. It was the shocks. The horrible, body wrenching shocks. What was going on here?
Was there something wrong with Kota? Or was it the new family?
Soon, when a terrible event thrusts one of the family members into action, Kota wakes in their house. Terrified and confused, she does what anyone would do- demands to know their secret. Will finding out cause more trouble than she expected?
With approval meetings, offering hunts, blood messages, massacres and magic – Senior year soon turns out to be more than Kota bargained for, but does she regret any of it? What can she do to help? How does she get through it when she can’t even talk to Sue?
Follow Kota and her friends ad they conquer Senior year, live, learn, love and make some life decisions – but will it be enough to save what they have?
My Thoughts –
I found this story to be a very different take on vampires, and on the connection between vampires. Yes, I know that we have Twilight and it has opened out eyes to seeing vampires as friendly, rather than horrific, blood sucking monsters. However, I still feel that, even though both stories start in high school/secondary school, this story has a very different take on things.
Firstly, there are still surly characters, who have to be won over, but I like the fact that, unlike Edward, the news of their secret isn’t given up as easily. Connelly may make a decision to do something that means the family have to tell Kota their secret, but they also fight to keep secrets.
I think that the pace of this story was great. We were given just enough detail, especially at the beginning, to keep us guessing. Then, when we did find out the groundbreaking detail, it wasn’t just handed to us in full. It trickled through, as Kota struggled to come to terms and as she questioned things around her.
I also liked Kota questioning nature. She didn’t just wait around to see what happened. She actively searched out answers to the family’s life, asking at any moment she had the opportunity. She got involved in what they were doing and really got to know them. I think this made the story flow very well, as we weren’t just thrown details for the sake of it, they all had a place.
The character depth was good. I like that the characters had very specific personalities. It was great to see how some of them reacted to specific situations, especially when they did so in line with what you expect from their character.
Finally, the ending was good for what is expected. It was heart-wrenching, but left you hanging enough to want the next instalment of the series right now. You want to know what happens to the family, what Kota does and how she’s involved. Throughout the book, it eludes to a feeling, and inkling, that she is involved in more way than we know, and this feeling has almost come to fruition at the end – leaving you guessing as to what will happen in the next book. I did find that the end moved rather quickly, but considering what was taking place and the style of end, it was fitting.
OVERALL: I liked this book. It is a great book for YA and adult readers of YA. It talks about a lot of life’s trials, when you are that age, and deals with them in the best fantasy book style way possible. I think the overall story if fab and that a lot of people would enjoy it. It definitely left me craving the next book.
***I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review***
I really liked this book!
The main character, Kota, seems like a normal high school senior. However, throughout the book, there are hints that suggest, she could be anything but normal.
She has some close friends and becomes involved with a new family (The Peters) in town through dance lessons/competitions through their school.
As the story goes on, we start to see that there is something different about this new family in town. I became convinced I knew what their secret was but was totally wrong when it came out. That was a great twist because I was a little disappointed when I assumed I figured it out.
Eventually Kota comes to know the secret of the Peters and because of this, her life and the lives of her loved ones are in danger as her world is turned upside down.
This story had a lot of similarities to Twilight but there were enough differences to make it a completely different story. Between Kota and her friends, and the Peters family, there are a lot of characters in this book. Most are easy to follow but there were a few that were less developed and a couple of times I had to go back to figure out exactly how this character was related to the family. My hopes are these characters are developed further in Book 2.
As mentioned, there are hints that Kota may not be just human although she is not aware of this at all. I also thought there could be something more to one of the new friends in her inner circle. His name is Louis but I think that this may be a name change from a previous release of the book so I don’t want to cause any confusion.
I really liked this story – there were a few layers to it. They overall story about a girl and her friends going through their senior year in high school; but there is also the story about the Peters secret and the dangers that rise up from this.
Kota is a strong character, which is refreshing because she does not play the damsel-in-distress role or the I’m-totally-in-love-and-this-guy-is-my-world role either. There was actually a situation at the end between Kota and Connolly (one of the Peters family) that I was more upset about than Kota was. She is faced with danger and heartache and deals with both remarkably well. There are a lot of funny snarky remarks in the book, which made it a fun read.
Ensuing Darkness ended on a cliffhanger. I could see this coming as I was watching how many pages I have left in the book and knowing what needed to be resolved. I am really looking forward to Book 2 as I need to know what happens next for the Peters? Is there something more to Kota that she isn’t even aware of? Is there something more to Louis? This is how a cliffhanger should end – with the reader needing more.
I definitely recommend this book but be careful because it could leave you with a book hangover and wanting the next book to be out NOW! ☺

Synopsis
The small town of Maxville, Colorado is harboring more secrets than Kota imagined. There is a new family in town, one with a cover and dark secrets. They have a mission: Get in, do the job, and get out, but when their youngest get mixed up in a taboo romance, things get nasty. Kota finds herself surrounded by everything she never knew existed, and the blame is all on her when she puts her friends and family in danger to discover a truth she was never supposed to see.
What I liked
First of all, I love the cover of this book. It's so pretty. I really like the plot of this book. Book was fast-paced almost throughout the whole story line, what is a big plus for me. I was absolutely stunned by the way that author was able to describe each situation. Sometimes I found it even unnecessary, but it helped me create a better picture of what is actually going on in the story, and to understand the characters better. Characters are well-developed, and pretty unusual. I felt like each of them was unique in their own way. Another great thing were the relationships between characters, they felt so real and believable. I was pleased by the fact, that not all of the "events"that happened were predictable. Usually I figure out what is going to happen next in the book, but I was mistaken multiple times in this one.
What I didn't like
There were very few things that i disliked. One of these things was, that the story had kind of slow beginning. I'm not a huge fan of that, but I understand that in this case it was necessary, because otherwise the "things" that were happening wouldn't be explained so well. Also, when I received the book, I was little bit confused by the synopsis. It just sounded quite odd to me, and I didn't really got all the information that I was hoping for. That's why I give this book 4.5 stars.
Overall Thought
I was very surprised by this book. I didn't really expect it to be this good. You know, I thought it's just another typical book about vampires, nothing new. Well, I have to say, this was by far one of the best vampire books I've had a chance to read, ever. Alexis Cain made vampires absolutely different creatures than the ones that you've heard about in Twilight or other vampire based books. This book left my heart shattered to tiny little pieces. I cried and laughed during this book. My Kindle almost said "Hi"to my wall at the end, but luckily I realized, that it isn't good idea. It left me on the edge, and I cannot wait to read the sequel.
What can I tell you about Ensuing Darkness? I can tell you that it has a great plot that takes it's time to develop, without ever being the least bit boring. It has a very "rich" world-building that gives the reader many detailed pictures to imagine Kota's world by and that make the story just the more alluring. It also has many interesting characters, some you don't get to know very good, others that seem to always be there and all very 3-Dimensional even though the author doesn't go too deep into background-stories. It's rather the emotions and conversations as well as the (extremely good) descriptions of body-language that do the job. The center of the story is Kota, who always seems so vibrant and full of energy. She is also very curious, a trait I loved about her - the more so, because I'm just the same! ^^ Her counterpart is Connelly who just moved into town with his family and just can't stand Kota, or does he? And what exactly is wrong with that guy and his family? When I finally found out it was really not what I had expected by then! Still the (not so new)idea and how it was set in place (very very new and uncommonly!) is just short of genius and far too good to be revealed in a review!
This is the point where I have to say that the description of the story doesn't really do it justice and is also a bit confusing, it makes Connellys family look like thieves or something, when really they are on the run! Still it is true that Kota get's herself, her friends and family in great danger through her connection with Connelly and even more because of her nosiness.
This book is Alexis Cains first and she did a great job on it! I love the story, the characters, the places and all of her ideas - they all are so very different from the stories I've known! Her writing style is very pleasant to read and rich in details - so that you can imagine everything easily without it being too much distraction from the plot. The book is also the first in a series, with the second being work in progress. As in many series I imagine it was "just" the (absolutely brilliant) warm-up for the real deal and a few more revelations to come and I for one cannot wait for the second book to be finished and published!!!
I received Ensuing Darkness as part of the Read to Review program of the Lovers of Paranormal Group for free in exchange for an honest Review.
You know, when Alexis contacted me about reading her book, I wasn’t sure if I was interested. This was mainly because of the book description. It was a bit confusing for me. I like a book description that doesn’t give anything away, but provides a clear picture of what the book is about. I wasn’t really sure about Ensuing Darkness from the description, though. Is the Peters family a group of criminals or supernatural beings? While it wasn’t clear, I had an idea and agreed to read it.
In general, I enjoyed Ensuing Darkness. In fact, I liked it more than I thought I would. I think Alexis did a really good job with the characters in the story. While there are a lot of them, and I did occasionally get confused, they all had unique and well defined personalities. There were some really strong scenes that stood out to me. I won’t give anything away, but once you read the book, I’m sure you’ll agree that some scenes are stronger than others.
There were some things that I didn’t enjoy, though. In the beginning (and much less towards the end), the similarities between Ensuing Darkness and Twilight were more than I was comfortable with. Thankfully, the similarities did end and the differences were nice and brought life into the story that I didn’t expect. The only other thing I didn’t enjoy were the scenes that didn’t seem to bring anything into the story. There were a few too many scenes that go into detail, but don’t do anything to further advance the story.
Overall, Ensuing Darkness was a good read. I’m looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

Kota Riley is a girl in a small town who loves to hunt and snowboard and hang with her best friends Sue, Dale aka "Big Brother" and Chase. She has great parents although mom is slightly overbearing with her older sister Kait. This school year brings alot of changes. Being a senior is going to be an adventure even she couldn't have imagined!
This book has drama and loads of humor. Even brought tears to my eyes! It's filled with great characters and an interesting storyline. I can't wait for the next book! Loved it! Definitely leaves you wanting more!!!
Kota lived in a small town. she spent her free time partying, hunting and hanging with the guys, but she was looking hard for something new. one day, the Peters family moved into their town, bringing good looking guys with them. the boys were great dancers, their mother the school dance instructor. bad with dancing, Kota and her best friend Sue, were forced into training for the coming ball dancing competition. that was when they met with the Peters’ twins, Connelly and Ivan.
I received a free e-book from the author in exchange for a review. the book started out overloading me with its mass amount of names that I found myself skipping lines just to get to the action that it seemed to be in the middle of. caused by skipping names, I was momentarily confused when the focus switched to Kota. It took me a while to realize that the main character had switched to a girl. the characters did little to hold my attention, especially not the romance; the main thing that kept me going was its mystery. I just couldn’t get to the reason that the main characters were shocking each another quick enough. the pace was slightly too slow to my likings, perhaps because more time were spent on developing their relationships instead. every time the action finally surfaced, I was pleased to have stick with the book until the very end.
Okay. Connelly and Kota are the main characters. Connelly's family moves to Kota's Colorado town and the two start a rocky relationship. Mysterious things start happening, putting them all in danger.
What I liked: Connelly's family, Kota, and the interactions between Kota and Connelly's family. I also enjoyed the dancing.
What I disliked: I never bought into the "relationship" between Connelly and Kota, especially from him. Yes, Kota adored Connelly. However, I never believed he felt the same. Not like she did. Also, I think there was either too much editing or not nearly enough details. Too many unanswered questions, at least for me. Too many characters in the first person left me a little confused at times, too.
The ending wasn't really a surprise. Still, there is one huge mystery that might have me reading book two...if I think the mystery will be revealed. It has to do with Kota. The girl is a mystery all by herself.
I am going to give this story 5 stars, because it did not have a rush I can't live without you love scene. Thank you!!!! Kota finds herself in the middle of a fight that shakes her to the core, when the Peters moves to town. Her friend's Sue, Dale and Chase will protect with their life, but the dark world that comes to town can Kota save her friends and family ? This story is well defined and there no rush love scenes between Kota and Connelly.
Overall, this is a very good read full of adventure, action, and mystery.
I ended up truly liking Ensuing Darkness by Alexis Cain! At first, I wasn't sure about it. I knew something was going to happen, but the plot twist seemed to take a long time to reveal itself. However, once the plot twist happened, the book took off from there, and I didn't want to put it down. I loved Kota's character and Connolly as well. I was not ready for the book to end when it did! I hope there will be a next installment!!!
