I loved reading about the southern ghost stories around the south, and I loved how detailed each story was. My favorite stories were The Eternal Dinner Party because I love how historical it seems, and how the spookiness is from still hearing the party after the building burnt down, President Carter’s Haunted House because love the creepiness to it, and it reminds me of the woman in white, The Brown Mountain Ghost because I loved mystery of it, and I find it cool how the lights just appear, Railroad Bill because it proves not all ghosts are evil, and it is sweet that someone who was so bad can do so much good, and The Ghost Of Marse Joel because it is like a treasure hunt for gold when he dies, he seems successful and has a lot of land.
My favorite quote was “perhaps this ancient mystery will one day be solved” because it still leaves it mysterious and brings up more ideas of what the lights could be.
I only have three questions, the first one relates to the story of President Carter’s Haunted House and that she was a nice spirit. The next one relates to the story Railroad Bill and that is why he was a bandit. And the last one relates to the story The Ghost Of Marse Joel and that is why he hid the gold.
So I'm not sure if the stories in this are fiction or reality? I think they're nonfiction but idk. I mean, most of the legends mentioned in this book were interesting, but not that scary. I've read some kiddie ghost stories that are scarier, lol. I really feel like the author could've gone into a lot more depth with these.
This was a ridiculously short read. I was interested in the subject matter, but the "stories" were sparse with details, giving vague outlines of the general story. I wasn't expecting true tales, so that was nice but everything was so condensed that the moment your interest was piped, it was over. A little added depth to the stories would have rated an extra star, but this thin paperback just sends you scrambling for your phone in an attempt to find more substance for these bare bones stories.
A decent little collection of ghost and supernatural stories, though the book doesn't distinguish between actual accounts, folklore, and one or two I suspect of being largely the author's invention. In any case, it's an entertaining and very short read. (B)
