Cordelia is called to a strange theatre by a message from her estranged father, and she hopes for a joyful reunion. Her father though has been treading on dangerous ground while trying to impress the Director the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. Still Cordelia cannot possibly know the strange and terrifying details of what lies within this particular play house.
Tales from the Archives are short stories set in the world of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. They explore events mentioned in the novels, characters seen and unseen, and may include novel teasers of things to come.
Shaun creates an empathetic female lead who longs for a father who abandoned her for adventure and treasure hunting. A letter from her father says something about a special artifact housed at some newly built theater, and he needs her help to get it. The emotional investment is enough to drive the read forward in excitement for her and her father reconciling.
The fantastical elements left me confused at times, to the point of having to stop on multiple sections to reread. The magic in this story is very interesting, but the conclusion had so many rules to explain that I spent five minutes rereading different pieces. I'm afraid some of the prose is just not explained well enough for me to know what is happening or why. I guess I have enough of an understanding to enjoy my experience, but it was a challenge. After finishing, I miss the good guys, so that's saying something to Shaun's ability to create likable characters and nostalgia for their story.
A short story about a long-lived being that lives off souls she collects in a theatre. Chunky amalgam of ideas that have been done better before... espcially with the heroine being called Cordelia it had strom overtones of the Angel episode from season four, Waiting in the Wings. Not to mention Harry Potter's first confrontation with Voldemort in Goblet of Fire. Also, the molestation seemed unneccesary and the techobabble overly techy and pointless. And as a side note, hate the cover image.
Finally, I think now, with the plethora of Archived stories, we need a more extensive who's who than what's on the website, with a list of all the agents names and all the stories they appear in. Just saying, this would be hugely helpful to us readers!
