London's shadowed alleyways, sleepy pubs and misty open spaces are alive with the ghosts of the famous and the forgotten, the lovelorn and the loveless, the damned and the damnable. Haunted London takes the intrepid ghost seeker on a truly hair-raising journey to some of the capital's spookiest places. From the chilling manifestations at the infamous 50 Berkeley Square to the eternal restlessness of Jack the Ripper's victims, Richard Jones, professional tour guide and inveterate ghost hunter, leaves no haunted house unmentioned, revealing the intriguing tales behind the lost souls who haunt them.
Richard Jones is the author of 18 books, two of which (Uncovering Jack the Ripper’s London and Jack the Ripper: The Casebook) are about the 1888 Whitechapel Murders, and several others (Walking Dickensian London and History and Mystery London of which cover other aspects of East End history.
While it was not as spooky as I had hoped, it was a very interesting collection and fun to read. It actually made me long to return to London and revisit some of the places listed. I really appreciated the maps that came before each chapter and that the haunted places were divided into groups by location. It is very easy to find what you are looking for and how to get there, with contact details and transport links listed for each location. Not in itself scary, but if you are one who goes in for hauntings and plan to visit London, definitely pick this up.
Essentially, this book is a tourist guide for the seekers of spooky, mysterious sites. Along with maps, transport and contact details, there is a brief description of each site and the nature of its "hauntedness".
The reason I liked this guide was mostly because of its account of lesser known places in London, that actually contain a rich history. It doesn't just invite you to visit them, but also search for more details of their history. I believe A history of london books should be on my to-read list.
I am finsihed reading Haunted London by Richaard Jones and it was a really good book. It told me about all of the haunted places in London and what happened in it.
It was a really good book I liked when it told me places that are haunted and what happened in them like one a person hauntes a place because their master killed them with a sword. If you like books that are scary this is the book for you. I could not read this book at night so I read it in the morning and after school and during school in homeroom.
It had many different characters in it because all of them are ghost. It was a really good book cause it had alot of different storys and not just one story if it just had one I would of not read it.
If this author had a second book or another ghost story book I would read it cause this one was so great. If you are scared of ghost storys I would not read this book at night I would read it in the morning or after school or during school at homeroom or directed studies.
I would recommend this book cause you learn all about the haunted places in London so if you go there you can go to those places and see if the things are really there. If you like this book you could look his name up and look for other books that the man wrote and you may like it and you can put it down for a goodread book. So remember that if you like ghost storys this is the book for you.
This isn't exactly a book you can read cover to cover. It's more of a tourist guide for those who might be traveling to London and want to visit allegedly haunted spots. It has a brief write up of the site and who is believed to haunt the place and at the bottom of every page is contact information, a website (where applicable) and the nearest Underground stop(s) to access the site. The book is divided into geographic sections with an accompanying map for each section.
I love London and I love participating in ghost tours whenever I travel. I have been to some of the places mentioned in this book. And I intend to go back to visit the rest of the haunted places noted in this book.
