Rate this book

The Black Order Brigade’, translated from the original French work ‘Les Phalanges de l'Ordre Noir’ is a chilling graphic novel with a political-thriller angle written by Pierre Christin. The highlight of the book is the brilliant illustrations by Enki Bilal, which sets the tone perfectly for a macabre political tale soaked in bloodshed and violence.

The first thing I noticed while reading ‘The Black Order Brigade’ was the hazy dream-like feel of the sketches that is amazing and haunting at the same time. But this style of illustration complements nicely for a tale that starts of with carnage and which is serious in its mood.

The story begins in late 70s with ‘The Black Order Brigade’ - a fascist organization dating back to Spanish Civil War and comprising of the remnants of Franco's former soldiers – cold-bloodedly massacring all the residents from a remote countryside village in Spain. When this news reaches London, an English journalist named Pritchard – a former member of International Brigades from the Spanish Civil War - recognizes them as former enemies and a greater threat to the future of Europe. Pritchard assembles a group of his former militant members from International Brigades for a final stand off against ‘The Black Order Brigade’. Soon Pritchard and his band is searching for ‘The Black Order Brigade’ which takes them all across the continental Europe in a long journey full of death, bloodbath and misery.

What makes the stand off between these two groups of old-timers fascinating is the fact that the author chose to portray them as aging old men with deteriorating health and illness, instead of super fit commandos. This gives their motivations which are fueled only by old glory and passions more visibility.

I prefer my protagonists as either children or old folks: either below 16 or above 60, nothing in between. This comic provides well of the latter, with a bunch of cranky farts killing each other for reasons that I'm not sure even matter so much. Politics, I guess. Or maybe they just got really old and want to go out with a bang.

Art's great. It's Enki Bilal so you know it will be. It pains some lovely landscape and backdrops for grisly murder. Plot is a bit less so but it pulls itself through, and I like these guys.

At this time Bilal n was not a fashionable star who wind his drawings 100000 euros. Christin and Bilal. A political comic strip. A brigade of the Spanish civil war reunite after many years. They are old, sometimes sick. The danger : a fascist organisation, the black order brigade. But it is not so simple, settling of scores between Stalinist and Trotskyist of the POUP.
Everybody will go at the end of his history with his failures and his disappointments.. A melancholic graphic novel.

EXTREMELY disappointed. Tiresome anti-war, post-war drama, based on dirty dozen in a stupid way: they are all old and tired. And they have to hunt down other old people.

Not recommended. You could read this tiresome thing only for historical reasons.

Now I officially can say that Moebius & Bilal are great painters/artists but not good comic artists.

This was a great thriller
An international brigade that had fought against fascism in the Spanish civil war reforms 40 years later when band of terrorist from that era becomes active again. One bunch of gun-toting geriatrics chasing another made for a great story. The script by Pierre Christin does make for dry reading at some points but I was still entertained in the two sessions it took me to read it.

The art by Enki Bilal was a revelation for me, it’s my first time experiencing it. Some hints of Moebius and Gimenez in there and a grey-ish palette that worked really well with the morose tone of the story.

I always enjoy the art of Enki Bilal. This is why I purchased the book. The artwork is great as always. I found the story line itself to be uninteresting. I kept hoping for more.

Good historical fiction, great attention to details. I like also the fact old people are the main characters.

Pity for the massacre of the Italian language during the speech of the Italian member of Parliament. On top of all the other mistakes, a communist manages to address the people with the word the fascists use (''camerati''). This deserves to be quoted in the list of the Top 5 embarrassing misprints as number 6 ;-).

Nice tale of leftist revolutionary struggle. The Spanish Civil War was so important in the wars and conflicts to come that it was a defining moment in world history. And this was originally published in 1979, so it's an early Bilal. Pierre Christin is, on his own, a celebrated writer of BD. Bilal would proceed to mainly write and ilustrate his own stuff. This graphic novel was published in a time (the Cold War) where trenches were being deepen. Now we live in another such time, so maybe it's a good idea to recover narratives like this one.

3. "rapire un’esponente comunista" > rapire un esponente comunista
E dulcis in fundo:
4. "ti dò l'estrema unzione" > ti do [...]

"One last mission" type of story with a bunch of old soldiers hunting down other old soldiers they fought 40 years ago. Unlike most stories of this type, it focuses more on the growing old part (and not just in a comedic way). Characters are mostly flat. Art is pretty solid.

Enki Bilal's slightly dirty and wet aesthetics work wonders here, it's very beautiful. Page 12, a Spanish church, scowled, under a gray sky. The diversity of locations is rich and allows Bilal to explore different architectures and aesthetics across Europe, although all united in his same distinctive style: Aragon, London, Barcelona, Sicily, Rome, Switzerland, Heidelberg, Amsterdam, Paris, Massif Central...

Unfortunately, Pierre Christin's script is, for me, not up to par. The many dialogues are a bit heavy and stiff. There is a form of childishness and a lack of credibility in several situations, for example the group of activists that we follow commits an improvised bomb attack on a far-right group in Barcelona with only a few hours of preparation, all present there on the port in a total lack of discretion. It's naive and grotesque.

The brutal ending makes up for it a bit and, added to Bilal's excellent drawing, ultimately makes it a read that is not totally devoid of interest but undermined by monumental writing flaws.

-------

Pierre Christin's 'The Black Order Brigade' is an incredible story about elderly Spanish civil war veterans who were members of the International Brigades reuniting to confront the re-emergence of an old fascist threat. The Black Order Brigade is an elderly group of fascists that form in response to a remote, nearly forgot Spanish village elects a left leaning mayor. During the civil war, the town was fought over till the end of the war approached. Once it was clear the Republic was lost and fascist victory approached, the international brigades were disbanded and its members fled to their respective countries of origin. Despite their departure, the struggle against fascism never ended for them.

For some reason I expected the story to be a bit more lighthearted than it turned out to be. The characters were very reflective, thoughtful, and even struggled with the morality of what they were doing, though never wavering in their commitment to stopping the fascist threat. Christin's shows the dealing with their age and failing health, but more importantly with being forgotten or dismissed by the much younger people around them. Like them, the story shows how some people have totally forgotten the struggles that took place in Spain and elsewhere despite how that past continues to haunt the present both in the story and in our own time.

Enki Bilal'in çizimleri her zamanki gibi muhteşemdi.

NOT: Aslında senaryo tamamen kurgu değil.

Mixed bag: masterful artwork, very nuanced characters and their dynamics, and meticulously researched value systems and historical backgrounds. The story itself is undermined by noise, I think by (albeit realistic) tonal whiplash between international communist idealism and practice, combined with the resulting messy actions with chaotic consequences. The movement is too vague to make an impact, and only able to yield destruction (despite its small in-group solidarity).

Most of the depth is in the psychology of the relationships, that's it. also: Bilal is very pleasant to look at.

Yine de Enki Bilal'in çizgileri harika.
