09/15/2016 Edit: I've now had to blacklist this author due to her fans harassing me with her encouragement.

Original review:

Are you freaking kidding me here? This can't be serious... Okay, even non-Americans should take issue with this in a post-9/11 world.

YOU are the main character, whose name I've already forgotten - no offense. Imagine you're on a plane, luxuriating in first class as you usually do. There are two men in pilot uniforms sharing first class with you. In the middle of the flight, you notice the two pilots enter the cockpit. You think to yourself, "Hmm, that's weird." And then you look around and notice two things: all the other passengers seem to be in a trance, unresponsive in their seats and two dudes that stared at you earlier in the airport are now walking up the aisle and entering the cockpit. So then you think to yourself, "Huh. Must be kinda cramped in there." IT MUST BE KINDA CRAMPED IN THERE.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!

That's what you're going with here? Four fucking randos just waltz into the cockpit while the rest of the passengers are checked out like they OD'd on Xanax and you're going to contemplate the tight fit instead of wondering what in the everliving fuck is going on and freaking out LIKE ANY NORMAL PERSON WOULD?

Now there are six people in the cockpit and the plane starts diving, jerking, climbing. You look around and see everyone else is still in a trance. You're in a plane that is literally crashing and you do nothing. There are some flashes of light, the plane levels off, the pilot comes over the speaker thingie and says there are mechanical difficulties and they're turning the plane around. All the other passengers are now totally fine, behaving normally. You obediently get off the plane with everyone else and notice the two dudes that entered the cockpit - the two dudes that stared at you before boarding the plane? They're now staring at you...again. You go home and brush off the whole experience as an inconvenience and plan to fly out tomorrow.

ARE. YOU. FUCKING. KIDDING. ME.

You literally just watched two "pilots" and two strangers storm the cockpit of your fucking plane and you do nothing? No phone call to loved ones? No screaming? No "Hey, what the fuck?" You see people in a trance and you don't freak out and start trying to wake them up? You don't pull out your fucking cell phone and take a selfie as your plane is crashing? NOTHING? You hear the pilot give a technical difficulties excuse for the mid-air acrobatics, let's not even touch the trance shit, and you just walk off the fucking plane like it never happened? You don't wanna know where the TSA security, the police, the FBI, the NSA, the DOJ, Homeland Security, or the Sheriff of Nottingham are? Because at least two of them should be there! But you're just like "Ugh, now I have to call my friend and ask him to come pick me up."

AREYOUFUCKINGKIDDINGMERIGHTNOW?

You should be asking a shitload of questions. Instead, you go out to dinner with friends before coming home and finding yourself face to face with the ghost of your dead father. He says nothing, but you feel like he's examining you. And you know what? He is. Your father came back from the dead because your head needs to be examined. You're so fucking dumb, your dead daddy is just staring at your head wondering where you went wrong. Was it his fault? How could he not see it as you were growing up? Maybe it's due to the lack of a mother figure. Did it happen after he passed away? Did you crack from the grief? There must be some reason for your brain to not be working as it should.

Because if your brain was working as it should, you would have doNE ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT YOU DID, YOU FUCKING MORON.

.... Needless to say, I will not be finishing this book. I gave up after Ghost Dad's appearance at about 4%. THAT much stupidity happened in like the first two scenes. I can't imagine what preposterous amount of stupidity the other 96% holds but I know I can't handle it.

The Legacy of the Key is a healthy dose of otherworldly goodness. This is the first book in the Ancient Guardians series where we get to meet Reece Bryant, a normal human from planet Earth who leads a normal human life, until she is dragged along to another dimension where she learns she is the Key to the location of a stone powerful enough to destroy many other worlds or dimensions out there. If she falls in the hands of the wrong people, everything would end badly, including for Earth.

The new dimension we are introduced here is called Pemdas, a place drawn so beautifully and unique that I would definitely love to visit there if given the chance. My mind was flooded with so many rich images of this strange land that even they can’t do justice to how S. L. Morgan describes it. It’s a land with an explosion of colors; plants glow with different hues, the sky is ever more brilliant than ours, even the animals and insects are interesting, similar as Earth’s, but with their own particularities.

The characters are another great thing to boast about this book. They made me smile from ear to ear countless of times, both for their witty dialogues and for their distinctive personalities. Reece, Levi and Harrison were my favorites, quite the team they made together. Reece and Levi were so adorable as a couple, practically dripping honey whenever they were side by side. And, Harrison was such a delight to be around with, always making funny comments and lightening up tense situations. He’s even more hilarious when dealing with the infuriating Simone, whose jealousy makes her such a pain in the neck so many times. I really don’t like her. Crazy, crazy, crazy.

So yes, I loved this book and I can’t wait to continue the story. I grew attached to these characters, to the beautiful Pemdas and the storyline that promises to get even better with its sequel.

I received this book free from the author in exchange of an honest review. I thought the book was excellent. It is a clean science-fiction romance, but not as sci-fi as you might imagine. The characters are all mostly humans even though they travel through different dimensions. I found the suspense to be good and the characters were very easy to get to know and like or dislike as the case may be. I find myself wondering about the characters and how they will move forward in the future books.

In The Legacy of the Key, the first book in the Ancient Guardians series, by S.L. Morgan, Reece Bryant and Levi Oxley are from two different worlds…literally. Reece may seem like your average human from Earth, until she meets Levi, who introduces her to the beautiful land he is from and makes her realize that she is more special than she ever realized, in more ways than one. Not only does she learn about the different worlds and dimensions she never knew existed, but she also soon falls in love with Levi, a Pemdas Guardian and the son of the emperor. Levi has duties to protect not only his world but Earth as well. However, his growing love for Reece complicates things as their enemies, whose complete focus is on capturing Reece, begin to make their move.

There are two words to describe this book: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. It is very difficult to put into words how much I enjoyed it. The concept of the different worlds and dimensions among us was unique and very intriguing; it immediately had me hooked. Also, the pacing was perfect; the plot wasn’t rushed at all, and it wasn’t slow either. Reece and Levi’s relationship gradually grew, which made it completely realistic, and this brings me to my next point. Only a brilliant writer can have a reader utterly engaged in and captivated by a book to the point where the real world is shut out and all that exists are the fictional characters and their world, which is exactly what happened to me. I felt like I was right there alongside Reece and experiencing everything she felt and went through. I hopelessly fell in love with Levi as Reece did, which doesn’t happen very often. Their relationship was so heartwarming and touching that I was so disappointed to see the book end but also ecstatic to continue reading the series. A combination of romance, suspense, fantasy, and sci-fi, The Legacy of the Key is exciting, adventurous, romantic, and is certainly a must-read. It is definitely the best book I have read in a long time. S.L. Morgan is an extremely talented storyteller, and she has become my new favorite author. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a sequel to read.

Well, I didn't all out hate it. However I've read much better fantasy, much better action and much better young adult-ish genre books. It was a lot of of talk and not even close to enough show. Scenes went on way too long. Pages and pages of characters telling our less exciting than a pool noodle "heroine" (using the term loosely, because she did NOTHING) that she deserved explanations and would get explanations at some point. In the future. Maybe. Eventually. When we did finally get what I think was reasons, it was all so vague it didn't much matter. After that it was a bunch of wandering around palaces, gardens, woods, and neighboring villages with no plot advancement. Reece just worried her pretty little blonde head over how her life had changed and how much she had fallen for her tru wuv all while hating on the meany royal snobbery. It felt like the author might have been going for a Jane Austen type vibe with some Mean Girls thrown in for laughs...or for propping up said heroine. It didn't work.

I was almost excited to get the big action/climatic/fight scenes. Then I thought better of it and set my expectations low. The car race had great promise. Problem was it didn't just fall flat, it cratered. There was nothing that ever showed how evil or menacing or even scary the bad guys were. We were just told that was so and should thus believe it. The great meeting in Scotland? Nothing happened there either. Alien 1 throws a fit and makes demands. Aliens 2-5 nod in agreement. Good guys burst in, take control. CEO of the good guys makes a long winded speech. Aliens 2-5 change their minds. Alien 1 vows to get his revenge all while skulking off with his tail between his legs. Everyone goes home with no blood shed or injuries. And everyone lives happily every after...for now...while the evil bad guys and the mean girls regroup and plan another way to get their revenge.

Oh and if Levi called Reece 'my Love' one more time, I was going to start throwing things (a big pet peeve of mine. She has a freakin' name. Just because you love her doesn't mean you can't use it anymore)

On the plus side, the descriptions were nice and the horses were sweet, lovable creature.

I really don't see myself ever picking up book 2.

Sci-fi meets Historical in a wonderful blend.
This story takes off rather fast. The pace is steady and tons of action.
I even loved the romance part of the book....although that part did progress SLOWLY.
The characters are different. Well defined and plot orientated.
Reece is wonderfully crafted. She is very relate-able.
Levi, however,, is my favorite character. Cute, dignified, and caring.Prince Charming by far.
Harrison is like the comic relief of the story...quick wit and laughter makes him a great character.
By far one of the best books I have read thus this far.
I look forward to seeing what's next.
Oh...and before I totally forget...I HATE SIMONE!!!!!!!!

This book was just the thing for me. Action, sci-fi, fantasy, and a little romance to balance it out... I'm extremely excited for the next books!
The author's niece lent me her copy of the book, telling me that even though I don't read romance type books often she was certain I'd love it. She was right - I was sucked in right from page one! It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I definitely enjoyed it.
The ideas are all very clever, and the complete originality of it was amazing. I've read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, but I can easily say I've never seen anything like this one out there. All in all, I'm just really excited for the next books and don't want the series to ever end!

A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to come across Ancient Guardians by S. L. Morgan. The book has a unique concept which blends classic 17th century romantic fiction with Avatar like imagery in a universe populated by multiple parallel dimensions. The author navigates with unerring ease between 17th century type romantic settings, 21st century action and pure science fiction, and has skilfully integrated this eclectic mix into a great story. The combination of fantastic imagery, attention to detail and great characterisation really draws the reader into the story.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this first instalment of Ancient Guardians and I am already looking forward to the next chapter of the adventure (although I feel that I will be visiting this great debut book again soon before then).
For now it has pride of place on my bookshelf next the Rowling’s and De Lint’s.

I have never cared for time travel nor space travel or dimension travels but I must confess this one is awesome. I would recommend it to anyone. The reason I gave it four stars is because it took it a little while to get started well. I'm sure the Uninvited will be better. I can hardly wait to read it next!

This book was really bad. I couldn't even finish it it was that bad. I pushed as far as I could but the stilted language and extra descriptive wording was boring and irritating to read. (Jack sure does have some entertaining and relaxing humor!) The story wasn't good enough to distract me from the language so I finally called it a day. You can even tell where the author left off from writing and then came back later and picked up again. The editing is good and it's well formatted which is so rare in books I pick up for free but in the end it's a dud.

Copied and pasted from blog so editing might be a bit wacky ^.^

5 stars!!! Categorized as YA fantasy/paranormal, Ancient Guardians has everything one could hope for when looking for a more than satisfying read (the "paranormal" is of the extraterrestrial sort for those sci-fi lovers!). Its vivid, mysterious, beautiful, clever, thrilling and altogether majestic.

Do you enjoy losing yourself in fantastic worlds full of wonders? Do you like the feel of adrenaline racing through your veins when pursued by a powerful and frightening enemy? Do you appreciate love that is not instant but actually has a beginning and blossoms over time? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then Ms. S.L. Morgan has your number and its been dialed.*You know what I mean right? I feel like Inigo Montoya is going to pop up and say "I do not think it means what you think it means". I would love to say that that would be "INCONCEIVABLE!" but truthfully, I may very well be pulling a "Vizzini". Right or wrong, I think my phrasing of the "I have your number" idiom has a nice ring to it... No pun intended I swear! Moving on...*

The world building and detailed imagery is incredible! Sometimes I find myself sort of lost when an author doesn't give me any guidelines as to what their characters or world look like. On the other hand, I don't like for so much detail to be given that I am limited and feel forced to picture it a certain way. For instance, the main character is portrayed by a model on the cover but you may not like how the model looks or disagree with the description given and would prefer to create your own image...but now you are stuck with the image of the person on the cover (also annoying is when a character is featured on the cover but the way they are described by words contradicts the looks of the cover model)! Well, there is clearly no model on the cover of Ancient Guardians but readers are not left without a picture of the characters or their clothes!

She scrutinized the dress. The shiny, satin-type material was a brilliant scarlet color. Reece noticed its daring neckline and the capped sleeves that were designed to hang off of the shoulders...Reece gasped in awe at the webbed pattern of what appeared to be red rubies and diamonds, which were strung throughout the open back. The satin material of the dress fell from her shoulders and drooped down to the small of her back, just below the stringed jewels. Her back felt exposed and bare; however, the jewels were so many, and webbed in such a unique pattern, that her skin was hardly visible. She was at a loss for words.

Now I can picture this dress in a few different ways but I decided to pick the prettiest one in my mind and stick to that one. That's what I mean by not being limited but still given plenty of information to create the world in your mind as the author intended.

Along with the fashion, Reese, Levi, and other lovable (or unlovable) characters engage in witty dialogue that is reminiscent of Jane Austen. While I am not much of a Jane Austen fan, I do appreciate clever comebacks and wicked humor. To say I was entertained would be an understatement. I had plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and grew to admire Reece for the strong person she is.

Set at a steady (never dull) pace, you will find enough action to keep you on your toes but become so involved in a true love that it just might sweep you off your feet. Enjoy this delightful and intriguing first installment, Ancient Guardians-The Legacy of the Key. Happy Reading! ^.^

I really enjoyed the challenge of writing this debut novel for the Ancient Guardians novel series.
As a new author, my greatest fear is that someone will perhaps purchase this book or read it and it not be what they were expecting. This is why I sought out reviews from bloggers and I have been very fortunate to receive very descriptive reviews from other readers to help readers decide whether or not this series is for them.

I want to use my review to make potential readers aware that the first five chapters of the book are available for free download, so that you can decide if this book series is one you would enjoy reading.

Thank you,

Review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/reviews/...

I’m usually not very fond of books where there’s some sort of “chosen one” who has special powers and can defeat the evil lurking in the shadows of the world/realm/planet/whatever. Reece, the main character in The Legacy of the Key, is the key to a map which leads to a powerful artifact, which instantly makes her a special little cupcake. However, I wasn’t too bothered with that this time around. Reece is a great heroine, a nice mix of courage and intelligence. She’s not overpowered – which is the usual problem with “chosen ones” but instead has to rely on those around her to help her out when needed.

The world building is nothing short of spectacular. I really enjoyed S.L. Morgan’s inventions like the Council of Worlds – does that sound awesome or what? – the alternate dimension Pemdas, the aliens, etcetera. This book is an eclectic mix of science-fiction and fantasy, and it makes a nice blend.

Levi was a great love interest. I loved him from the first moment he came into the picture, and he makes a great match for Reece. Their personalities really match with each other. More often that not, male love interests in young adult literature tend to be controlling or bossy (read ‘bad boy persona’) but Levi doesn’t suffer from that at all. He can be pretty stubborn, but it fits his heritage (he’s from nobility) and his personality.

This book was a great read, and an excellent debut. I can’t wait for S.L. Morgan’s next novel.

Beautiful story. At first there was action happening and secrets what keep you guessing what's next and this makes you to eagerly turn pages. Book easily grabbed my attention and kept me reading further.

Later on there was less of action and story became slower. But still I found it interesting to read how Reece managed to deal with an unusual situation she was in. I think it's because it was easy to picture myself in her place having similar questions and choices. And also it was believable what I read.

The way Pemdas nature was described was beautiful. I really wished to see such a land by my own eyes. Love story was sweet and delicate. I enjoyed reading how it evolves bit by bit. And main characters were likeable. I found Reece believable, Levi adorable and Harrison charming. I loved fun conversations between them.

Further to the story there was more of secrets and complications coming out, tension rising and action happening. I turned pages eagerly again to find out what would happen. And how it ended it made me interested to read the next book in the story. I have a feeling there would be happening a lot of things in there I want to hear about.

This book reminded me of the Kricket series by Amy Bartol. Reece and Kricket are both living their lives on Earth when they are rescued after an abduction attempt. While Kricket fought both groups "rescuing" her, Reece went willingly with Levi and Harrison with little attempt at finding out what was going on.

When Reece travels to an alternate dimension similar to earth, she finds out she is a key. Her ancestors knew where a stone is that's important and it's implanted in her mind. The people of this dimension can read minds, but hers is different because reasons? She's a main character? It would make for a very short book if they could read her mind and move the stone? Idk. This part was the least fleshed out to me. It will probably come up in later books.

So Pemdas (the alternate dimension) is similar to 17th century earth. They have technology and can travel dimensions, but there are no cars, no TV, etc. I found this a bit strange but it was charming to have a modern character in a historical setting that didn't involve time travel. I thought this was a pretty interesting idea and I really enjoyed it. The books states Pemdas is similar to 17th century Europe, but I got a lot of Regency vibes from it. Everyone is polite, even while throwing shade. It was similar to pride and prejudice to me without being an obvious retelling of pride and prejudice and that is probably why I enjoyed it so much.

Levi was very similar to Mr Darcy. He's rich and important. He isn't a jerk to Reece, which is how retellings of P&P usually play that trope. He is quiet and misunderstood at first toward Reece, but that resolves itself quickly. His best friend is Harrison, who is similar to Mr Bingley. Harrison is good natured and funny. Harrison was actually my favorite character in the book. He also has a biting sarcastic side and I loved seeing his passive aggressive insults. Simone is so much like Caroline Bingley. She's got her hat set on Levi and puts down Reece whenever she can, but of course she does it politely. The characters are well developed and the dialogue is entertaining.

Reece takes being in Pemdas in stride. I like it that Levi and Harrison go away after she gets there and she doesn't spend any time thinking about them. She spends her time exploring the new world. She does fall for Levi but their romance doesn't feel forced at all. It's sweet and clean. It's appropriate for younger readers.

All in all, once the book gets to the Pemdas setting it does very well. I didn't feel like Reece's actions while on earth where believable for a grown educated woman. But once she gets to Pemdas the book does improve. Suspend your disbelief at the character actions at the start of the book and it will get better.

Reece is your typical college student, dealing with classes and unfortunately, her father's passing. At least that is what she thinks anyway. She is heading to San Diego to finish up things on her father's estate, when she notices two handsome young men at the airport, and then they are on her plane, which ends up having trouble and returning to Philadelphia. She later notices them again while out with friends, and while out on a run they save her from being abducted. Turns out they are her Guardians and she is someone called The Key. Now she must understand that there are other dimensions and worlds other than her own, all while hiding for her own safety. Ancient Guardians is a young adult tale of character and honesty. S. L. Morgan takes fantasy and morals and makes it into a wonderfully captivating romance novel between a young girl called the Key and her Guardian.

Ancient Guardians: The Legacy of the Key is the beginning of a new series, and it is a strong start to the series. It lays a good foundation for more to come. The guardians are shown to be a people that a strong, yet morally upright and have good values; which is why they were originally chosen as the guardians in the first place. Greed and power are the opposite and are shown to get in the way of life and what is really important. This fantasy novel is set in multiple dimensions, which is a fun concept to think about, with Earth being the central focus of the dimensions. Although there is some fighting, the crux of the story is the romance between the Key, Reece and her guardian, Levi. This is a great young adult and teen novel in that the romance is also woven in with a moral message of honesty, trust and doing the right thing. This novel will also appeal to older readers as well, and given that it is very clean, even mature younger readers would do well with the novel.

This was a clever book that answers the question “what if we are not alone in the universe?” In this story, an alien species tries to take over the Earth, which is where we got Atlantis. The reason Atlantis sank was that a clever earth scientist created a gem that destroyed the enemy and sank Atlantis. Then he hid the stone and created a map in that would exist in the minds of his ancestors, but could not readily be accessed by his ancestors. Now thousands of years later, his last surviving descendent is in danger from the same species that once threatened Earth. The same race he worked with then steps in to protect her as they promised all those years ago. Because of the nature of the threat she is whisked away to their parallel universe. Then…

Seriously, you didn’t think I was going to tell you what happens? Why would I give the secrets away. Let’s just say this story is science fiction, fantasy, romance, action, mystery, suspense, and men-in-black all rolled into one. I think it would make a great movie based on all the visual descriptions, although I’m not sure even Hollywood could match the vivid pictures painted by the author’s words.

I give this story 4.5 out of 5 clouds.

It is my understanding that this story has won several awards. Well, that's nice. However, I have to say that I'm out of tune with the award givers. Any time I find myself concentrating on the glaring clunkers in grammar and syntax rather than the story is a bad omen for the book. Unfortunately, I found myself editing rather than reading. Which is a shame. The author did not lack for imagination. Her story had promise. I'd like to see this author write a lot more with the assistance of a tough, old-fashioned editor with a whip and a chair and a sharp blue pencil.

Great read

Great read

normally not a big fan of romance, but there is so much more to this book! other dimensions, what feels like time travel, the well rounded characters....it would be a disservice to the author and then book to call it just a romance novel. Not since "The discovery of witches" by Debra harmless, has a book kept me up all night just to see what happens next. I need part 2 now.......Thank you for this great story!

Too much mansplanating. That really detracted for me. I may try to read it again but the lead character was just too weak for me. I understand hot guys are hot but that doesn't mean you should interdimensionally travel with them for giggles...

Loved it. Starting #2 tomorrow! Kept me involved and couldn't put it down. Enjoyed the concept and felt close to the characters. Good mix of fantasy and reality. Well done. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
