Red Light Properties

Red Light Properties: Previously-Haunted Real Estate

Rate this book
Welcome to the world of RED LIGHT PROPERTIES! Ghost stories, five-alarm family dramas, urban shamanism and a downturned housing market all compete for the attention of the husband/wife owners of Miami’s only exorcism-and-real estate agency. The debut volume of an ongoing series of graphic novels by writer-artist Dan Goldman (Shooting War, 08: A Graphic Diary of the Campaign Trail)!

“Goldman’s ghost stories made the hairs on the back of my neck prickle, while the bawdy slapstick interludes served only to lure me into dropping my guard for the next scare. Highly recommended.” – Cory Doctorow, BOING BOING

"Dan Goldman's RED LIGHT PROPERTIES elevates creator-owned comics to another level. It’s incomparable in ambition, extraordinary in concept, and executed masterfully by a single mind. It’ll blow you away." – BloodyDisgusting.com

"A whip smart, pitch black comedy that pulls few punches and offers up a slew of supremely memorable, highly dysfunctional, yet surprisingly realistic characters. If you can look past the fact that they spend a good deal of their time dealing with the supernatural, the Tobins feel like people you know, which is a testament to Goldman’s ability as a storyteller." – Nerdist.com

“Dan Goldman has a voice & vision like nobody else in comics. . . . RECOMMENDED!” - John Layman, Creator of CHEW

“Hilarious .. A druggy blast inspired by Goldman’s heroes like Terence McKenna, Larry David and Wong Kar-Wai.” - Wired.com

“RED LIGHT PROPERTIES is what comics should be: trippy, fun and inventive.” - Chip Zdarsky, SEX CRIMINALS

"Goldman’s rollicking story, replete with photo and art mashups, is nicely executed and screamingly funny... This is the first in a new series — and your opportunity to get in on the ground floor." - The Miami Herald

“The equivalent of seeing a circus performer pull of a remarkable high-wire act while juggling weighty and disparate materials to create a unique spectacle.” - The Beat

“It’s part funny ghost story, part crazy business scheme, part relationship story, where eventually the supernatural aspect of the business takes a toll on the lead characters and their marriage.” - Publisher's Weekly

“Mixing the supernatural realm with an all-too-familiar world of marriage breakdowns, financial meltdowns and everyday horrors, the strip is more impressive work from the man behind Shooting War and 08: A Graphic Diary Of The Campaign Trail.” - TIME.com's Techland

"Recommended for adults seeking funky graphic novels about life, love, success, and ghosts." - The Library Journal

Dan Goldman is a writer, artist and activist working in graphic novels, animated TV, video games and digital media.

Raised in South Florida, Dan was a founding member of the ACT-I-VATE webcomics collective in Brooklyn, launching the careers of many creators (including his own). In 2006, SHOOTING WAR, his serialized dystopian satire of the War on Terror was nominated for an Eisner Award. Dan began contributing editorial illustrations regularly to New York Magazine's weekly "Intelligencer" column, eventually leaning harder into comics journalism with a long form collaboration with journalist Michael Crowley. Together they created 08: A GRAPHIC DIARY OF THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, a 160-page nonfiction graphic novel documenting the chaotic 2008 Presidential election--written and drawn in real-time--which resulted in a hybrid of the visual languages of comics and magazine design that NPR Books called "defiantly and refreshingly unconventional."

After the election, Dan and his wife moved to São Paulo, Brazil where he began to produce his long-gestating passion project: a paranormal horror series called RED LIGHT PROPERTIES. Initially serialized online at Tor.com, the series saw print via IDW Books (US) and Plot! (Brazil) and is currently in development as a live-action TV series.

Returning to NYC, Dan produced Emmy-winning experiences for AMC Television and scripted two video games based on mega-hit series The Walking Dead. He then co-created the augmented-reality enabled feminist comic series PRIYA'S SHAKTI with collaborator Ram Devineni. With funding awarded by the Tribeca Film Institute, Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, this work allowed Dan to criss-cross the Indian subcontinent several times, working directly with the young people his stories were created to inspire. The series has since been downloaded nearly 1.5 million times in multiple languages worldwide. This experience in India inspired Dan to found the Kinjin Story Lab, a narrative studio dedicated to creating mindful entertainment across multiple media.

Dan's next book CHASING ECHOES, a semi-autobiographic graphic novel about American Jews traveling across rural Poland in search of family land seized by the Nazis, will be released in November 2019 from Humanoids Publishing.

He is based in Los Angeles with his partner Liliam and two endlessly-entertaining cats.

I was drawn in by the premise but stayed for the excellent writing and vivid characters. In Red Light Properties, a Miami-based married couple on the last leg of their relationship run a real estate business with a unique twist--they clear haunted houses of spirits so the properties can be sold. While there are a few ghostly encounters, a surprising amount of the story centers around the deteriorating relationship between psychic Jude and his wife Cecilia. That may sound depressing, but the ancillary characters keep the tone light and entertaining. When the couple catch a break with some Miami power brokers that could keep the floundering company in the black, the couple may get a second chance at their relationship as well.

If you want a ghost story, this may not be it. If you want characters so vivid so that you feel like you know these people, then you may want to check it out.

I should mention that the art is very good as well, mostly consisting of photo imagery for the backdrops with the drawn characters in the background. It's so seamless that I was well into the book before realizing that the backdrops really were photographs.

Lastly, when I first held the book I thought that the binding glue had overflowed and covered the front and back of the book. I could feel the texture and grit under my fingers. But when I turned off the light I saw something glowing on the nightstand. That "glue" is glow-in-the-dark ink in the shape of spectral figures on the front and back. Very cool.

Dan's stories hold nothing back in terms of plunging the depths of human (or inhuman) behavior. His characters are most often profane, unattractive, and treat each other like dirt. Yet underneath all that ugliness beats a a generous human heart, and a belief that we as a species can do better (usually with the help of psychedelic drugs). This story is filled with hilarious moments, complex characters, and narrative surprises. It defines the term a "graphic novel."

The best psychedelic, crumbling family, housing bubble graphic novel set in Florida you’ll read this year. Or any other year. It’s kind of like Ghostbusters, if the ghostbusters flipped the houses they busted. Kind of spooky, kind of funny. All heart. For fans of drugs, sex, shamanism, real estate, communing with the dead and interracial families.

It was fine. I was expecting a lot more focus on the hauntings and teh houses than all of the protagonists' family dramas. I would read about haunted real estate ghostbusters all day if they were only more interesting than petty domestic squabbles and predictable fights between wives and young, sassy interns.

Red Light Properties is a group of ghostbusters who release lingering spirits from houses long on the market. This was intermittently entertaining, though sometimes I felt I was slogging through the thing.

Fantastic artwork. Great combination of photo/digital and hand drawn.
