At the end of the previous book Darker After Midnight, where vampires were outed in the worst possible manner by Dragos, I wondered where the author would take this series further.

A total new direction in one of my favorite PNR series….fast forward twenty years later, with a whole new set of characters as the new leaders of the Midnight Breed, include old favorites in the storyline…..and what did I think???


Meet the new generation of Breed warriors!!! The Breed Order’s children, most of which we have become familiar with in the previous books, are all grown up and ready to join in the fight to work together with humans in bringing peace to the chaos and violence that has reigned since the First Dawn, when humans discovered that they were not the only species on planet Earth.

The storyline involves a human scientist who has developed a technology that is able to destroy vampires. Mira has been selected by Lucan to be the scientist bodyguard and when human rebels abduct him, they take her with them.

Mira, Breed Nikolai and his Breedmate, Renata’s adopted Breedmate daughter, who we first met in the 5th book Veil of Midnight https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... is now grown up!!!

Now captain of one of the Breed teams dedicated to protecting humans and vampires and keep the cities safe, is strong, kick-ass and dealing with some major issues in her life, in particularly coping with the death of Kellan, the Breed she loved eight years before, which are impacting negatively on her ability to work with her team.

During her captivity she recognizes the rebel leader, someone from her past and who had died before her very own eyes years before.

Kellan, troubled and lonely youth, taken in by the Breeds, when his family had been massacred by vampires had become very close to Mira throughout their lives. He was a fierce warrior, mourned and believed dead.

I loved seeing Kellan and Mira together again. Even though I thought the reasons for his disappearance were a bit weak….really…but he believed he did it for a good reason….

What I really liked was how Mira handled Kellan…

How she never gave up on him or stopped loving him.

I loved the passion and chemistry these two had together.

There are some pretty heart-wrenching moments towards the end but giving up loving each other was never possible.

The set-up for the new series was totally amazing, with a “wicked” cliffhanger at the end that leaves you wondering…what next!!!!

4 After First Dawn stars

After First Dawn starts the new Story acr for the series, with a jump in time of 20 years. I loved almost everything about this book. I was really glad that Lara Adrian started with Mira and Kellan. I however was not happy with Kellan. He is the reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. When the books started we find 29 year old Mira a captain of her own Order team. For the last 8 years she has been heartbroken over the loss of the love of her life Kellan. Only Kellan's ass isn't dead! To say I felt Kellan's reason for disappearing and letting everyone hurt over his death for 8 years was completely weak is an understatement. He Seen that he would be killed in Mira's eyes(you can see the future in Mira's eyes) so he let Mira hurt for 8 years why? Anyone reading the series knows that Mira's visions always come true ALWAYS. So running wouldn't stop it. All he did was cost them 8 years together.



For most of the book I found Kellan sullen, and immature like he was still the emo teen in the earlier books. I don't mind when h&h are apart in books as long as it's because of a good reason and I didn't feel Kellan's was. Let's not forget his grandfather Lazaro lost everyone in his family but Kellan, yet Kellan let Lazaro believe he was dead. He was a coward. Then Mira forgave him just like that.



Mira on the other hand was brave, strong and smart. She knew what she wanted and she went after it. She was a kick ass warrior. It was nice seeing her and Nathan all grown up. Now after Mira and Kellan reunited I loved them as a couple. They had tons of chemistry together. I just had a sour taste in my mouth the whole read over the lost time. Nathan grew up yummy! I was also over the moon to get to meet the other kids from past couples. Still I didn't get enough. I want to know if Hunter and Corinne had a son? What about Rio and Dylan? Claire and Andreas? I need more kids! I really like the new bad guys and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Breeds, finally!!!

Kudos to Lara Adrian for giving this series a breath of fresh air!! I have to admit that I was hesitant to start this book because of the finality of everything in Darker After Midnight. But if you're having any misgivings like I was, there is no need to worry...this book is everything the series was and more!

Of course, it helps for the book to be about Mira and her crazy eyes and visions of the future. I was always drawn to her especially after the way she brought Hunter around. I was in no way prepared for the kick@ass, take no prisoners, grown up, warrior Mira. Right at the beginning, we are shown just exactly how Mira takes care of business...and we also find out about her heart break.

Mira's heart break that's named Kellan Archer. I remember it being a toss up between him and Nathan. I wasn't sure who would be best but I think LA made a good choice. Everyone has thought that Kellan died eight years ago but because of a vision he saw in Mira's eyes, he's been hiding out and doing some "nefarious" activity.

Kellan and Mira seemed so right together...so much so, that I hated having what he did hang over them. Then, they have to deal with the fall out of the vision....it's a lot for a couple to deal with but it does make for some dramatic and emotional reading.

And H-E-L-L-O...do we get a whole new group of yummies to fawn over!! Meet Rafe, Dario, Nathan, Micah, and Aric...those are just the grown up kids of the Breeds we have read about. Throw in Balthazar, Julian, Torin, Elijah, Jax, Syn and Rune and LA has set up the series for quite a while. Nicely done.

And we also get to visit with all our old favorites. I was a little sad to know that they are not all together due to the war and the First Dawn but at least they get to come together when needed.

There's also a new group of breed haters that we learn about and who cause a whole bunch of problems. There was quite a dramatic ending with such a great twist. I LOVED it. Definitely stirs things up and make it a lot more interesting. Can't wait to see where things will go.

I loved that there was an epilogue and we get a nice ending with Mira and Kellan. The next book is about Nathan and it seems that Jordana will be his mate. He's almost as robotic as Hunter...but not as bad. Still when Jordana did what she did, I had to laugh. Looking forward to Crave The Night.

It's been years since I've read a book in Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series. When I picked up Edge of Dawn, I was afraid that I wouldn't remember what had happened in the last book. I don't know why I worried because Lara Adrian effortlessly pulled me right back into the goings on of The Order. I listened to this on audio and really enjoyed it.

In the last book, Mira was still a little girl. Her gift of sight allowed whoever looked into her eyes to see their future and those visions were never wrong. She had to keep her eyes covered or wear special lens that would keep this power under control.



This book fast forwards twenty years into the future and Mira is all grown up and a warrior now with The Order. She's still trying to get over the death of the love of her life, Kellan. It's been eight years. He was killed while chasing rebels into a building that exploded. Or...at least that's what she thought happened until she was kidnapped by Rebels while out on a mission and found out that their leader, Bowman, was none other than Kellan, her Kellan.

"I don't care what the vision said. I'm yours. I always will be."

He saw a vision in Mira's eyes, accidentally, years ago and knew that his future was going to turn bad, so when someone rescued him from that explosion years ago, he decided to let Mira think he was dead. He never thought he'd see her again or have to explain to her why he let her believe he was dead. Now Mira is his prisoner too, taken by his crew along with a scientist. They had originally set out to only take the scientist who has created a way to harness UV rays because it's been used to kill vampires and Kellan can't have that.

Now face-to-face with her past, Mira can't believe he would turn and be on opposite sides of The Order. Once she finds out more of the story and sees that she has a second chance with Kellan, she is determined to help him. The only question is will The Order listen or will they put him to death as she's seen in a vision?



I forgot how much I love this series and am excited to pick up the next book to continue on.

"Edge of dawn" starts 20 years after "Darker after midnight". I loved Darker after Midnight and it beautifully ended the Order story, so I was curious to see what Lara Adrian could bring to it. Except for its last quarter, Edge of dawn was meh for me, mainly because of its main characters.

I liked Mira when she was a kid, but for most of the book I couldn't really like her because she was too immature. Many times in the book I had to tell myself that she wasn't a YA heroine but a 28 years old woman.

Unfortunately Kellan didn't make up for Mira's flaws. As far as I'm concerned he was just an average hero, and if I was curious to know why he decided to leave the Order and disappear, the answer was another disappointment. "Your visions are always true, so I had to leave." Huh?? Where is the logics in that statement?

Even if they were really few, I liked the snippets with the older heroes as well as Lucan and Dare relationship.

I also have to say that for me this book has all the ingredients of a spin-off not of a sequel, so I don't understand why it was added to the Midnight Breed series. Not only the book starts 20 years after the last book, but except for Lucan who as the leader of the Order and the Breed population has some significant appearances, the other "old" heroes are barely present, and there is a bunch of new characters introduced in this book, some being the children of the Midnight Breed series heroes. It also seems that Lara Adrian used an element she put in one of the last Midnight Breed series's book to start a brand new plot. So, yeah, spin-off written all over it.

Another incredible book to the Midnight Breed series!

EDGE OF DAWN is the 11th book in Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series and this book totally changes the MB world as we know it. Most series when they go on for such a long time and have so many books to a series, they start to lose their gusto and get boring. To much of the same ol', same ol'. But this is definitely not the case with the MB series. Lara Adrian proves she's the rock star of paranormal romance. In a genre that has pretty much seen everything, she has taken the MB series to an incredible new level and has completely revitalized the series. Its absolutely nothing like the 10 previous books.

EDGE OF DAWN starts off with a 20 year jump into the future from where we left off in DARKER AFTER MIDNIGHT. Its now 20 years since First Dawn, the day the rogues attacked humans all over the world which left the Order no way to clean up an attack of such epic proportions without revealing themselves. Now, the entire world knows about the Breed and of course, there are haters out there that want the Breed destroyed, worried that they'll strive to take over the world one day.

Lucan Thorne, his Breedmate Gabrielle and their son Darion, aka "Dare", now reside in the Order's global headquarters in Washington DC. Lucan is now a Chairman on the Global Nations Council, and preparing for the World Peace Summit. Lucan bares the huge weight of trying to keep peace between the humans and Breed, which is a never ending struggle. We also get to see the rest of the Breed males and their Breedmates, who are now called "Elders". They all reside around the world and have their own Breed communities to look after.

Mira is now twenty-nine years old and the Captain of her own team of warriors in Boston. Mira walks the world a bitter woman since the death of her best friend and lover, Kellan Archer. It's been 8 years since Kellan's death and Mira still aches for him every day.
She hates the Rebels because she blames them for Kellan's death and when Mira crosses the line by attacking one of the Rebels inside a crowded night club, in front of hundreds of witnesses, Lucan has no choice but to remove Mira from active duty. Lucan gives her an assignment of escorting human scientist, Jeremy Ackmeyer from Boston to Washington D.C. To the huge peace conference. Mira hates being assigned to babysitting detail but is determined to see the job through. When she arrives at Jeremy Ackmeyers home, she finds herself in the middle of the Rebels trying to kidnap Jeremy. After trying to fight them off, Mira ends up in the hands of the Rebels. They take her to their leader Bowman, and when Mira sets eyes on Bowman her world gets turned upside down, because Bowman is Kellan. After 8 long years of missing her, he just cant let her go so easily. He's never stopped loving Mira and is determined to protect her from a horrible fate. But once he has Mira back with him again, will he be able to let her ago?

When Kellan discovers a secret weapon that has been made to destroy all Breed, he'll stop at nothing to destroy the threat. But that's not the only problem the Breed and the Order have to deal with. An ancient enemy has returned and they want their revenge on all Breed, and to take over the world.

That's all I'm going to say on the story-line because I'm scared of giving of giving too much away. There's so much that goes on and I don't want to spoil anything.

We get to see lots of Nathan in this book, for he is the one that goes on the hunt to get Mira back. He already lost Kellan, his best friend, to the Rebels, and now he'll do anything to save his other best friend. Nathan will take out anyone that gets in his way of finding Mira and hell make her kidnapper pay with his life. I think Lara also gives us a hint as to who Nathan's Breedmate will be. ;-). I can't wait for Nathan's book!

We also get to meet all the children of our favorite Breed males of the Order and their Breedmates.

One new character that intrigued me was Rune, a cage fighter in an underground Breed club. I can't wait to find out more about him. Maybe is very own book? *hint, hint Lara* :-)

I fell in love with Mira when we met her in Veil of Midnight and I couldn't wait for her to grow up and get her own story. Mira is strong, still stubborn and a great warrior. She'd do anything for those she loves. I LOVE Kellan! He's an alpha but not arrogant and domineering like most. He's a great leader, has a good heart and is willing to do anything to protect Mira and his team. I wasn't sure when Darker After Midnight left off if Lara would put Mira with Kellan or Nathan but I'm so glad she went with Kellan. I was voting for him!
You can feel the heart ache, the yearning, the chemistry, the pain and most of all, the love between Mira and Kellan. You hurt with them, cry with them and pray they'll get their HEA right down to the very last page.

Edge of Dawn is an emotional, heart breaking, action packed, adrenaline rush of a story. Darker After Midnight was the epic book of the series, but Edge of Dawn is the best book of the series. This book broke my heart, had tears pouring out of my eyes, and had me gripping my iPad in a tight hold while flipping through the pages. Once I started reading it, I just could not put it down. I read through the book so fast, I went back and re-read it a second time so I could try to do this book justice and give it the review it deserves. This is my favorite book in the series so far. I was already a huge fan girl of Lara's and the Midnight Breed series but now I have to say I'm even more so. This book took such a turn in direction that while the names of most of the characters are familiar, you'll feel like your reading a new series! Only a literary genius can do that and Lara, that you are! You're my romance rock star!

Well, I need to be completely honest. I really had huge difficulties getting into the story. I adored the previous book "Darker after midnight". It became one of my favourite books and it felt it had a finality. But I was sure the next book, ie this one, it would be brilliant. When I started reading it, I was not impressed. The warriors from the previous books were just filling the background, there were so many new names, I was not sure which new warrior was which old one son. Anyway, the confusion was solved very soon after I started it.
My main issue was Mira. She became a captain? Why? How? She confess that she does not have the preternatural speed or strength or the immortality. Of course her mother Renata was a warrior and a badass, but she used to be a bodyguard and she had the special ability to bring to his knees any breed. It was hard to imagine sweet Mira who loved puppies and Christmas being a badass killer warrior. It was funny. And she did not actually did anything to prove it in this book.
Anyway, somewhere after page 50 or something I decided that I will treat the books from now on as a new different series. I stopped completely thinking the book as a continuation of "midnight breed". I thought about this book and next books as a spin off. And with that assumption, I was really honestly ok. I totally enjoyed the book.
There is a new world built 20 years after humans learn about breeds. Now they coexist, humans and breeds learn to communicate.
Kellan, Mira and Nathan grew up together in the Order as training partners and best friends. Kellan after a night of passion with Mira, disappeared and considered dead for 8 years. It is revealed that he is alive and he leads a band of human rebels (whose names we will forget as soon as the book finishes). One kidnapping assignment that they have organised will go terribly wrong and it will be a starting point for Kellan and Mira to meet again.
Moreover, a new player is around and the Order has to be extra careful again.

I have to start by saying that I'm a huge fan of this series, but unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the previous ten books in the series back when the focus was on the original Breed brothers, the jump in time I felt has lost the magic and enjoyment of the series that I used to have.
Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that this is a bad book but throughout the whole story all I kept wondering was when there was going to be another appearance from one of the brother's, that was the main reason that I was desperate to get my hands on a copy, I know that it's set in the future and the characters that were kids in the first ten books are now the main focus but I found that I didn't really care about these characters as much, I did like Mira and Kellan and even Nathan in the previous books as kids but I just wish that Lara could have continued on the series somehow without the twenty year jump.
I feel like we've missed out on a lot of background information on the brothers and new characters that I would have loved to discover as they were growing up, not as they are now, but there were some positives which were the appearances of all the brothers even though they barely got any page time which I hated and which has taken my rating down a lot for their rare but longed for appearances.
I'm happy that the next book will be Nathan's I really do like his character and I hope that Hunter will have a lot more scenes in the story and with Nathan, actually I just hope it's original brother's heavy with appearances.
As much as I was disappointed with this book I will continue on with this series for the fleeting glimpses of the brother's that had me falling in love with the series in the first place.

Hmm, I'm kinda conflicted with how I feel about this book.

What worked for me:
♦ I found Nathan's scenes my favorite parts of the book. And Dare! Loved him too.
♦ I liked seeing all the oldies and meeting all the new warriors.
♦ The new villains! Very interesting direction this will be going.


What did not work for me:
♦ Kellan and Mira were BORING! First of all, reunited lovers is one of my least favorite tropes and second, I did not feel any passion between these two. They were blah blah boring blah!
♦ This whole story was very predictable...except for the new villain reveal at the end. That was awesome!
♦ I was very confused in the beginning. So many new characters were being introduced and a lot of world changes have occurred since the last book. CONFUSING! This was basically a transition book setting up and revealing who the new bad guys will be for the next arcs of this series. While I'm really excited about the new villains, it was a very boring journey to get there in the end.


Now that I've finally finished, I'm really looking forward to the next book release. I adore Nathan (so I hope his book is next), plus these new bad guys should make it interesting.

If I could give this book ten stars, I would! Absolutely excellent!!! Lara Adrian has out done herself, and I'm so impressed how she pulled of taking this series in an exciting new direction! So many times a series gets carried on for too long and becomes stagnant; but that is definately not the case for this one at all. She has written a masterpiece that includes all of our beloved characters from the beginning, and introduced us to the new generation of breeds. Let me tell you, this new generation is hot, sexy, and raring to go! I even have a new favorite and am dying for his story to come! There is a ton of new and old information that is revealed in this story and for that reason I won't go into details. After I finished the book I was speechless by all that has come to fruitation, and a little bit in awe of the authors mind! She set this series up to go into an action packed direction that will have us falling in love all over again with the Breeds and the beloved mates that stand by their side.
It was gratifying to finally see a HEA for Kellan and Mira. I have loved Mira from when she was introduced as a feisty eight year old, and I can tell you she grew up to be on firecracker of a woman! She takes no crap from anybody and is as loyal as they come. It was interesting to see her lead a team of Breeds into battle, and she sure can hold her own with her blades! Kellan took me awhile to warm up to, and I'm still irked with his betrayal. Yes, he had his reasons but the romantic in me feels he should have stuck it out. After all, it was stated best when said: " A team of two, stronger together." To me, that says it all in a nutshell, and together they would be able to conquer anything. Kellen, in my opinion, often seemed to give up too fast when Mira was always the one who wanted to find a solution. He did grow on me eventually, and I loved his love for Mira and his willingness to sacrifice his life for her happiness.
The new generation of warriors are not to be forgotten either. It was neat to see what some of the origional Breed's offspring have grown up to be like. Lucan's son Darion is someone who I believe will become a key player in future books. I also fell in love/lust with Nathan, and I am dying for his book to come out already! There are many more characters to swoon over, and there was some definate openings for romance to blossom. This is a series that I am eager to keep reading, and I look forward to all of the entertaining adventures that I am sure are going to come.

Ok. I love this author and have read a lot of the books in this series and loved them, but this one? Not so much.
Not that I don't find it interesting the direction the stories are taking, 'cause I do. It's just with this one I didn't like the hero or the heroine.
They spend most of their lives together, they finally sleep together, the next morning he looks in her eyes and then fakes his death. I've heard of guys who don't handle the morning after well, but that's a bit extreme.
Also, she wears these contacts always so she doesn't traumatize anyone, yet doesn't notice they're gone? Didn't she have to take them out the night before?
So, he sees a fate he doesn't like and fakes his death. Instead of trying to change a future he sees, he steps right into fulfilling it. He even knows he will be accused of kidnapping. Geesh!
Ok, so we know he's an idiot. But, her? She mourns him for EIGHT years! Makes it her mission to destroy all rebels since she thinks they killed him and becomes a killing, hating machine. But then she sees him alive. Goes 180 and becomes this softer girl who forgives him (too quickly) has lots of sex and is absolutely sure "he would never hurt me." EIGHT years!
But the part that I especially didn't like was when she returned to the Breeds and all the "mates" left to take care of her. Not the men, they had manly stuff to do, just their wives. 😏 I guess years and years of training with them and leading squads doesn't qualify her to sit with the men. Granted she had lost her eyesight by then, but did she get stupid, too?
Also, it was out of character for the mates to disappear like that. I've read their stories. They weren't clucking hens. What do these Breeds pack in their semen, for heaven's sake!
Anyway, I still love this series and I'm interested in seeing where the universe goes.

Second reading
Since I read the books in order this time I was more forgiving. But these still aren't my favorite characters. I guess I cared more about the heroine this time around since I got to know her better as a child. Anyway, the most important lesson is to read these books in order.

Mira has grown up with the Order of Warrior Breeds. Trained as a human warrior herself, she is an asset to the team when she doesn’t let her own agenda take control. This agenda has to do with Kellan Archer, her child hood best friend and lover. He went missing and believed dead during a bombing by a rebel faction. She has mourned for Kellan for 8 years and still wants to bring everyone responsible to justice.

Since he is mentioned in the book’s blurb I can provide the following although I think it’s a bit of a spoiler. Kellan never thought he’d be face to face with Mira again. After glimpsing his future in Mira’s eyes he disappeared into the rebels ranks, eventually becoming their leader. One rebel mission gone terribly wrong, brings Mira kicking, stabbing and screaming back into his life. The only question, can Mira over come the hurt and betrayal discovering her only love wasn’t dead but left her?

The Breed’s existence has been revealed to the world and there is a very fragile peace between human and breed kind for 20 years. Now a simple operation gone wrong can destroy it all.

Edge of Dawn is an action packed thrill ride. Lara Adrian did not disappoint with the newest installment in the Midnight Breed Series. The passion is combustible, the new mystery threat mind boggling and characters we love all make a presence. The children, we watched grow up and touch our hearts, have grown up and now its their turn in the spotlight.

I love the new direction this series is taking. I am very excited about what adventures Lara Adrian might have planned. I’m also hopeful, with this new threat, that it will bring swords back as a weapon of choice :D…I’m just saying.

Just finished my reread and uping this to 4 stars.
Definitely a better read the 2nd time around.

I was looking forward to this one. I knew it was a jump 20 years in the future from the last book and that is actually one of my favorite parts of the book. To see Nathan, Mira and Kellan all grown up and being a part of things. There was plenty of suspense and action. All the mysteries and intrigues are there.
Although I love the Midnight Breed series, this was not one of my favorite of the series. My biggest problem was the redundancy throughout the book. Way too many words used over and over again to explain Mira and Kellan's actions and feelings. If at some point this repetitiveness had stopped I would have given her 4 stars. I think all those words could have been better used to make all the other characters and situations more vivid. Because, in truth, it is my ONLY problem with the book. But for me, it was work to read this one. It didn't hold me tight in its grip like the most of the books in this series does.

Spectacular read, phenomenal characters as one would would expect from Lara Adrian. I was hooked from page one, and couldn't put this book down! It's good to see characters grow through other books, and then experience them as their own as an adult, with Mira we got to see this, and once again the characters of the Breed have stolen my heart. Adrian has always been an impeccable writer, but as I started reading this book, I was reminded of just how amazing and talented she is. She paints a vivid picture for every scene, delves deeper into each character until readers know everything about them, and writes some of the best action sequences I've encountered in a long time. All this and more is in EDGE OF DAWN. Make no mistake, Lara Adrian is one of the premier authors of paranormal romance and with this book, she proves it!

Kellan and Mira's relationship is complicated. Kellan has always loved Mira, but doesn't see himself worthy to be loved. His actions and decisions in life have tainted him and he doesn't wish for Mira to suffer the consequences of his actions just so she can be with him. The progression of their relationship is a rocky one, filled with delicious angst and selfless love. I'll bet readers will gobble this one up!

Another great thing about this book is the fact that Adrian has introduced so many new characters, some being the kids of past couples in the series. If this doesn't make a Midnight Breed fan scream and shout in excitement, then I don't know what else will! Nathan, a new sexy Breed member who plays an important part of in this story has his own set up very well in this book. I cannot wait to see where Adrian takes his story!

Book 11 in this bestselling PNR series takes the story in a new direction by moving the action 20 years into the future and concentrating on the children of the original Breed warriors.

From the beginning I felt like I was being bashed over the head with the fact that this is 'The Start Of A New Series'. Every new young character was introduced with a paragraph of information to set them up as interesting MC's for future novels. I would have preferred to get to know these people through their dialogue and actions but no, apparently I (as the reader) am too stupid to be trusted with that.

In addition every old couple wandered into the story at some point, there would be a brief meaningful conversation or interaction that reminded the reader of that couple's romance, then they would wander back out of the story, never to be seen again. It was so useless and annoying.

I probably shouldn't have read this book because the premise is not one that I enjoy. Mira is a supposed to be a tough chick - human - but with a special power to show the future to anyone who looks into her unguarded eyes. Ten years earlier her lover and lifelong friend died in an explosion. But surprise, surprise, he turns up one day as the leader of an amusingly ineffective rebel group. Mira, in a sudden (but predictable) display of doormat-itis, is making out with him in the space of 12 hours. Not so tough after all hey Mira! This lack of any real consequences for his cravenly deception is hard for me to bear but I struggled on for the next few chapters until we found out why Kellen decided to leave. Apparently he saw in Mira's eyes that he would be arrested and sentenced to death for treason and conspiracy against the Breed Order and he didn't want to put Mira through that. So what does he do? He fakes his own death, joins a rebel group, and starts masterminding activities of treason and conspiracy! What an idiot. So I stopped reading at that point.

Even though this story was not for me I will probably try one or two more to see if things pick up for the next generation of Breed warriors. But it's not looking good so far.

SOME MINOR SPOILAGE IN THIS REVIEW -- I was pretty happy when I heard that Lara Adrian was jumping the storyline of her series 20 years into the future. It gives us a whole new crop of young studly warriors and courageous breedmates. It was also nice that she started with Mira and Kellan, two characters we already knew well. I mostly enjoyed this book, though I have to admit I was disappointed that Mira forgave Kellan so readily, even before she knew the why of what he did. I get the whole soul mate thing, but his betrayal was pretty severe. Still, I liked the action and the pacing of the book, and there certainly is no lack of chemistry between Mira and Kellan. It's also nice to see the now grown sons of the original Order members, and how they relate to their various parental units, and to speculate on their futures. Adrian also introduces a new archenemy for the Breed, in addition to their ongoing tensions with the human population. Overall, a good start to the second story arc of this series.

I'm exhausted.

This is where I need to finally break and switch genre or category. I don't even know what I'm going to do. But I can't DO anymore Midnight Breed for at least a minute or two. The marathon needs to get put on hold.

*minor spoilers for previous books in this review - no spoilers for the current book* Mira's book might have been my favorite so far. I pretty much liked the entire thing. Shocking.

~ I loved the main characters.
~ I wanted to know more about the rebels.
~ The balance of character connection, action sequences, and world detail was well executed (still surprised that this is even happening now!).
~ The new villains are more interesting than Dragos ever was because there's more to be discovered about this new group than there ever was about the former adversary - a small-dicked vampire (just making that up) with daddy issues.

It's sad that I will have more to say about my (very few) complaints than I did about all of the stuff that I enjoyed, since the complaints are not about the book as a whole, and are really only just about a few hiccups in the world structure. So let me confirm again : Story - Great. Characters - Great. I'm a huge fan of little sister-type characters ending up with the older boy/man that they've admired for years. I would have loved to have witnessed Kellan's first awakening/awareness of Mira on a bigger scale than it was shown here, but I still loved their story.

BUT I ALWAYS HAVE A BUT, DON'T I?

I promised a continuation from the prior book to this installment.

My complaints are the same. I'm even more frustrated now about the Jenna/Tavia thing (I used to think Jenna's twist was A-OK until Tavia came along as Gen 1 and then they revealed more about the Breedmates being Atlantean. Too convoluted, I say.) BECAUSE of the new enemies in the war. Were Tavia's Gen 1 roots even needed, now that Dragos is gone? There was supposed to be a war between Dragos and the Breed, so the female Gen 1s might have played into that. NOW, it's all dropped in favor of the new war? Will Tavia ever find her sisters? A better question might be : will she even need to? The only cool thing about Tavia being female is that she got to have a daughter. Big whoop? We didn't need female Breed hanging around because being female was what made the Breedmates special. Breedmates were cherished and protected as being the sole thing that could sustain the Breed race. But NOW...we have a new generation of female vampires who can do the same thing.

Sorry Breedmates, now you're just...almost ordinary. What? Are they all of a sudden going to start kicking ass like Atlanteans? I sure as hell hope not because that would discount generations of Breedmates who...just...didn't. Well, except for Renata, but that's only because she won the superpower lottery when it came to offensive combat maneuvers.

I know, I should quit complaining. What's done is done. I can't "undo" Jenna and Tavia. I know that I told everyone in my last review that we're going to have to move on, but I'm having a hard time taking my own advice. It just makes so much sense to me that if the author was going to explore the Atlantean thing, that she shouldn't have even bothered with Jenna and Tavia being different, especially since there are still answers and unresolved issues which need to come for both of them. It feels like the author stopped mid-story and switched to a story she liked better. Dragos was wrapped up way too quickly, and here we are as readers trying to catch up with a new cast of characters in a world we don't know yet.

The new world should have been a spin-off. With an added descriptive bridge novella right after the end of the original series. Maybe we (okay, someone else...I'm way too lazy to actually do this) can talk Ms. Adrian into going back and writing a novella to fit in-between books 10 and 11, giving us some of the transitional time for the old characters, and backstory on some of the new characters. Maybe then, I can forgive some of the whiplash. I would still think that Dragos met an anticlimactic and rushed end, but I would get over that in exchange for more cohesion between worlds old and new.

The Midnight Breed series has always been a favorite of mine, so i was really excited when i found out that Lara Adrian was continuing on with more books (especially after the crazy ending in the last book!) ...i'll admit though, that i was also quite nervous when i heard that she was jumping ahead 20 yrs with this one..that's quite a jump! What was to happen to all the beloved characters we'd been with through out the entire series!? A lot can happen in 20 yrs and to not be able to be a part of that had me concerned. Why i ever doubted Lara Adrian i do not know because she pulled it off with flying colors!!

This book centers around the romance between Mira and Kellan. They grew up together w/in the Order. She was Niko and Renata's adoptive daughter with the "sight seeing" eyes and Kellan was the young teenage breed boy, who was taken in by the Order, along with his grandfather, when their entire family was killed. Kellan was a sad and moody teenager and rightfully so considering what he'd been through and Mira was a very sweet 8 yr. old who immediately latched on to Kellan and wouldn't let go. The became best friends and eventually fell in love. Something tragic happens and they're torn apart for 8 long yrs...but fate doesn't seem to be finished with these two, so a lot goes down and they're once again thrust back into eachother's lives.

Mira and Kellan were great!! Their romance was super sweet (i completely forgot how they called her mouse, loved that!) and extremely sexy!! I DO wish we could have experienced all of their "firsts" with them though...the 1st time they realized they shared feelings that were more than friendship, their 1st kiss, their 1st time "together", etc...in physical flashbacks as opposed to just "hearing" what had happened. But it certainly didn't take away from my loving these two together!

The action/suspense, emotional drama and the romance were all wonderful, as they have always been with this series...one never takes over the other which is what i love!! We've been given a whole new mysterious villain, hence things have been set up for what's to be an exciting storyline and we've been introduced to an entirely new cast of characters, some new members from breed society and others are children of the original members of the Order...so exciting because these guys are no less HOT than their fathers were!! ;)

Not only has LA refreshed this series with the new things i've mentioned, but she's also done this while keeping the original "cast" very much involved in the new storyline. Merging the old with the new has just cemented my love for this series, i can't wait to see what she has in store for future books!

First of all I like to say how much I adore this Author! I'm in love with this book series from the first sentence that I've read!

There's everything that I like - action, a little bit of mystery (sometimes a lot more the a little bit), love and romance and of course paranormal activity!
What can I say, I'm hopeless when it comes to that :)

So, about the book.

In the beginning it was a little hard to comprehend what's going on.
There were a lot of those What?When?Where? and WTH's? Because Author decided to proceed this series with action taking place 20 years after the last book. A lot of new names and activities.
It was like starting new series, but with the old and familiar feelings :)
From what I've read here, I think this series is far from ending, I really hope so!
I just wish that we(fans) wouldn't have to wait so long for next book!

Because of the time that had passed in the series they're both no longer kids and the connection they had before transformed into true friendship, love, passion..

Sadly not everything is good for them.. actually nothing is good, at least at the start.
And Mira's gift played a crucial part in all of it.
Lets not forget about very dangerous and powerful threat hiding very near..
Threat that'll have an impact on all, the human race and especially The Breed.
Looks like the war is coming... And you'll never guess with whom!!

I'm already tearing out off of my skin! I want more of this bewitching world that Lara Adrian creates!

Looks like I'll be skinless by the time new book appears LOL

Anyway, this was good read! I'm pleased with how it came up.
And I really hope the next story will be about Nathan!

BAM!! Welcome back to the world of Midnight Breed!

I love, love loved this book!!! Set 20 years after the jaw-dropping events at the end of the last book, Darker After Midnight, we pick straight up with the Breed boys and their girls and the awesome thing is – they haven’t changed a bit!!! One of the perks of being a vampire or mated to a vampire I guess, 20 years passes and they’re still the same characters that I’ve loved for the whole series. They’re not all together in the compound anymore, but they still make appearances. Plus this time there’s a whole new generation of younger Breed members – some of them the children of the ‘Elder Order’ (as they are now called), and some are new members to the Order. Either way, there’s a whole new dynamic, and a promise of a whole heap of new books, and I am totally on board with that!!!

This review may be a bit spoilery if you haven't read the last book, but it doesn't give anything away that isn't already in the synopsis, so I'm going for it...

This book starts 20 years after ‘New Dawn’, which is when the world learned that vampires existed, and their whole species came out to the world. The intervening years have been horrifying - war, terror, death and bloodshed. There is now a tentative truce, but tensions are still simmering and it’s a whole new world!

Our heroine is Mira – the tenacious, stubborn and adorable orphan girl that was adopted by Renata and Niko earlier in the series. Mira is now 29 years old, and has worked hard to earn herself a place as one of the Order, now leading a team of warriors. But she is also struggling with the devastating death of Kellan Archer, the boy taken in by the Order when he was 13 years old after the murder of his family, her childhood crush, best friend and the love of her life, who was killed 8 years ago while on a mission. While on a mission of her own she falls into enemy hands, only to discover that the leader of the ‘enemy’ crew (known as ‘Bowman’) is none other than her presumed dead lover, Kellan. Having walked away from Mira and the Order 8 years ago, he has created a new life for himself leading a band of vigilante rebels. While Mira is elated to see her beloved alive and returned to her, she is shattered by his devastating betrayal, and the fact that he is now her enemy. And Kellan is keeping his own secrets as to why he left her and allowed everybody to believe he died.

With all of this between them though, they still love each other deeply, and it doesn’t take too long for the chemistry between them to EXPLODE. Literally. OMG, the hotness is pretty epic! And the fact that they have history and a deep love for each other gives the relationship a different dynamic to the other books in the series because there’s so much more time with them being together without all of the ‘getting to know you’ and back and forth of a ‘new’ relationship. Instead, we get lots of Mira and Kellan time, and seeing them together is amazing. They have brilliant chemistry, but they also have great respect for each other, and despite all that goes on around them, they are actually pretty functional together.

I love these two characters!!! Kellan was a broody young thing when we met him early in the series (understandably, after the Order took him in after his entire family was slaughtered), but he is a good and honourable man, who is crazy in love with Mira and suffers terribly with the fact that he let her, and the Order, down. But he truly loves her and he believes that he did the right thing in order to protect those he loves, and my heart broke for him and all that he went through. He still tries to keep Mira at somewhat of a distance in an attempt to prevent her from any future heartbreak, but she doesn't take any crap from him - and I love that! Mira is an incredibly strong character. She is brave, open and honest, she says it like it is, and expects the same from him in return.

“After everything I’ve done,” he whispered harshly, “not only today, or eight years ago, when I left, letting you believe I was dead, but since the first day we met, Mouse. Ever since then, since the very beginning, you’ve stayed with me. You’ve always had my back.”
“I always will,” she replied. Her voice was quiet, but her eyes were resolute. “When you love someone, that’s what you do.”
Kellan went still. He could hardly move, could hardly command his lungs to pull in breath. “Don’t say that, Mira. That’s the worst thing you can say to me right now.”
“Why? … Why shouldn’t I tell you how I feel about you?”
… “Because when you say that, it makes me want to hold on tighter to you when I should be letting you go. And I need to let you go…before things get any worse.”
“Then let go, Kellan … if you don’t love me … if you truly want me gone…then let go.”
He didn’t."

But when things go horribly wrong, Kellan has no choice but to sacrifice his love and future happiness to face up to his fate. Added to the drama, the Order are looking for their missing warrior - knowing only that she has been taken by a mysterious rebel called Bowman, Lucan orders a ‘kill op’ to rescue Mira and hunt down and take out anybody that gets in their way.

I LOVED being back in this world, and seeing all of my beloved characters again!! The new crew of characters are an interesting bunch, and we get to meet Hunter, Lucan, Dante and Chase’s grown children, with one relationship already in full swing, and another set up nicely. There’s a fair bit of time spent with Nathan (Mira and Kellan’s best friend from childhood), and I’m looking forward to his story. Plus I loved the seeing the original Order guys in their roles as fathers – I particularly loved seeing Niko, and his love and protectiveness over Mira. So gorgeous.

Mira and Kellan’s romance was mega swoony, and they had some beautifully romantic times. However, their struggle for happiness was utterly heartbreaking! With so much against them, they go through a horrific ordeal to get to their HEA.

“For us. Kellan, you have to promise me you’ll give me that chance-“
“I can’t promise you that, Mira. I can’t promise to put you through any more hurt or distress than I already have.” He took her face between his palms, tenderly smoothing his thumbs over her cheeks and her trembling mouth. “But I will promise you this: I love you. God, I always have.”

This book was so exciting from start to finish. There are thrills, swoon, betrayal and heartbreak, and my heart was pounding with anticipation as it headed to the inevitable climax. And before it’s all over, we get to see the whole Order come out for the big, action-packed finish, with the emergence of a new, unprecedented enemy setting up the next stage of the series beautifully.

“What happened here tonight marks a new beginning … This marks a new war…one we must win.”…
Lucan met each fierce gaze, man and woman alike. “From this moment forward, we play by our own rules. Whatever it takes, whatever the cost. Our new mission begins now.” *Shivers*

I am such a huge fan of this series, and the awesome just continues. I can’t wait to see what Lara Adrian has in store for us next!

At times toeing the legal line, Mira has earned the respect of her men while facing the restrictions that come with not having the enhanced abilities of the Breed. She balances being strong, intelligent, rebellious, and pulls at your heart when it comes to her grief over losing Kellan. I'm really happy with the way her character turned out.

8 years ago, Kellan saw something in Mira's eyes that terrified him enough to put distance between him and his family by letting them think he died. I wasn't thrilled with his excuse for leaving, knowing well enough that there's no escaping Mira's visions. All his leaving did was hurt her. One could argue that it starts a chain of events that uncovers something big in the end but he didn't know that. I'll admit he starts redeeming himself by the end and holey moley, does he know how to make a woman's toes curl but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a big smack to the head.

Over the last 10 books, I've grown accustom to how a Midnight Breed book should feel and how events should unfold. Edge of Dawn breaks away from the Midnight Breed norm and really surprised me. The younger generation has moved to the forefront and they have their hands full. What starts as a simple escort of a politician's paranoid nephew turns into a man hunt and the discovery of a powerful enemy that has the capability of annihilating the vampire race. It took me a few chapters to get use to the new political environment, conflicts, and characters but I'm already enjoying the direction the series is going in.

It feels like just yesterday the Breedmates were pregnant and now Gabrielle and Lucian, Elise and Tegan, and Tess and Dante's sons are all grown up and looking to follow in their fathers' footsteps. Corinne's son Nathan plays a larger role and I really hope it means his book will be next because that man needs to let loose and relax.

This series was in need of something different and exciting and Lara Adrian delivers. This new Midnight Breed is fresh, sexy, dangerous, and emotional. Mira and Kellan start the new chapter in this series off with a bang and I can't wait to see what happens next.

What I Liked: It’s a fast-paced book after you get over the start. The story happens 20 years after the last book ended, where the Breed is out and a lot of wars were fought over their differences from the human race. It takes a while to illustrate the changes of the new world in general and the Order in particular, though fascinating to read. Mira is now a tough chick who is respected by her peers, we don’t see the little girl who was adopted, we see a woman full grown who is in control of her world and carrier. Without getting in to details, all I can say about Kellan is that where he ended up is… unexpected. Besides the new cast of young characters that we’ve mostly never met(besides Mira, Kellan and Nathan) we also get small updates on some of the other characters, we see how their lives are different, but also how they remain true to themselves and their friends.
I liked the story and the overall plot of this new ARC, though I was skeptical of it when I picked a little ahead(ok.. I read the epilogue and last chapter at the middle of the book, the curiosity was killing me!). I didn’t belive Ms. Adrian could turn that into an enjoyable and, at the same time, believable for the world she created. There are some twists and turns that you could never guess at!

What I didn't like: It took me at least 30-35% of the book to get into it. I rolled my eyes and had a lot of “wtf people” moments through that third of a book. After that it was great!


Favorite character: Mira. She’s a strong woman, smart, who succeeded in a world dominated by men. She’s also feminine and knows when to forgive.

My least favorite character: This is a spoiler, let’s just say he’s and megalomaniac a-hole! Besides that his homophobic and homicidal and thinks mass murder is an ok thing, only when it doesn’t happen to his own species, like that it’s a good excuse!


Favorite scene: This is a tough one… BIG SPOILER AHEADI loved the part where Kellan wakes up and understands that he didn’t die and that he’s actually alive. I loved reading it after what Ms. Adrian put me through with those few pages!

Would I recommend the book: Definitely! I don’t think it could be read and enjoyed as a first in a new ARC/series, there are too many subplots and scenes from the other books that make this one a great read, to be understood. It’s a marvelous new installment in the series and I loved reading it.

I, like most others, was totally confused at the ending of the last book, thinking it would be the end of the series. At least that's what it seemed like. Edge of Dawn takes place 20 years after the ending of Darker After Midnight book 10. Because of this huge gap in time, I think someone could read this book and not have read the last 10 books and totally understand it.

Most of the Orders members have had children and are now all grown up. Most PNR books that I read, after their HEA you don't really hear to much about what happened after. So I found that this was a nice change to hear about the children of the mated couples I previously read. The series has taken a turn and is now seeming to focus on the "Next Generation" Breeds and Breedmates. This story is one of Mira and Kellan, two such kids we read about in the other previous books.

The Midnight Breed series has always been a 3-4 star series for me. None of the books are bad, but they aren't books that blow me away either. I think it had to do with the huge similarities to BDB at the beginning. My favorite part has always been the Breedmates and their unique abilities that they each have. For the first time, the origin of the Breedmates is discussed, very briefly, but it seems like there is more to come. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this new piece of information, but I hate to say that where they "apparently" came from seems cheesy to me. It's been done before and I wish she had made it a little different, but I will just have to wait until the next book to really determine.

Mira and Kellan are the 2 kids that were bffs, in love but didn't want to admit it and they they lost each other. They were each others, "The one that got away"! It was a nice love story, filled with lots of ups and downs and doubts, but Mira was a force to be reckoned with. She wasn't going to let her man go.

Mira was a part of the Order, one of the few females in the Order. Her skills were talked about at the beginning of the book, but we didn't see much of her "badass-ness" in the book. I would have liked to have more action in this book, especially involving Mira.

Kellan was a coward and ran away from his problems instead of facing them head on. He betrayed Mira over and over and started to get on my nerves because of it. At one time they were closer to each other than anyone else in their lives, but it didn't stop him from making dumb decisions.

Nathan intrigues me like Hunter did. Darion (Lucian's son) and Rafe (Dante's son) are also equally intriguing. So, with the amount that the Breed is procreating it surely seems like Lara Adrian will have plenty more stories to tell.

Well, this book was full of angsty-moments, heart break, love scenes and surprises. I loved the way this was written with Kellan and Mira loving each other through the book and only having a brief moment of arguing with each other after Mira found out about his deception.

Their love making was sweet and their love story was fun to read. I really liked this story and all of its surprises. The ending was quite interesting and I'm excited for what Lara has in store for us in the next novels.

My one issue? If Kellan had never left after seeing that vision in Mira's eyes, would any of that have actually come to pass? He was there because he led rebels and kidnapped an innocent man who later died through no fault of Kellan's. If he had just stayed with Mira, wouldn't the future have been different? It was just a little bit of an annoyance. I thought it was pretty obvious and was surprised no one brought it up in the book.

Maybe the next book is about Nathan and Jordana?

One last thing, I loved seeing all of the old Breed's and their mates, plus their children. It was like visiting with an old friend.

Most of my friends loved this book far more than I. In my opinion, Kellan never had a good reason to run, and all of that related angst was unnecessary. The introduction of a new race of villains in the final pages seemed more about ensuring an audience for sequels... It could be that I just need to take a break from the series, which, overall, has been very enjoyable.

This is NOT THE BREEDS that I know.

Ms. Adrian has reinvented the whole series. The same but yet different if that make sense.
She mashed up the old and new generation and clearly, she has something big planned for this world.
I honestly was nervous about Mira and Kellan having the "kid" image stuck to them. Oh no! They have matured in every way! I love their trials and how they survived it all.

Well done, Ms Adrian.
