exceptionally entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series

This is an exceptionally entertaining new paranormal cozy mystery series. If fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. A young woman in a dead end job with a deadbeat boyfriend and no prospects runs into a bit of trouble. She keeps seeing a mysterious calico cat around. A few weird things begin to happen and soon she finds herself on the run with the cat heading to a mysterious town we’re supposedly a long lost aunt has left her a bookstore. No spoilers so you’re gonna have to read the book. you know what type of book it is so you have hints at where this is heading. This is an exceptionally good new series with a fun cast of characters. Lots of twist and turns plenty of magic and plenty of new ideas and stories. Check it out.

You know when you start a book and within the first few pages you are completely drawn in and just know you'll have a hard time putting it down? That's what Potions and Peril did for me. It pulled me in from the get go and kept me intrigued till the very last pages.

I'll admit that I am more than a little tickled whenever there's a talking cat, but Callie's cattitude was extra special. She stole pretty much every scene she was in. All of the secondary characters were quite individual and well written.

The mystery was detailed and well plotted. Clues were cleverly inserted, suspects were devious and there was enough twists for any mystery lover. The ending was both surprising and satisfying.

The magic in the book is at times a bit hokey and over the top, but it does work within the confines of the world and the story and I found myself enjoying it. Webb went all in on the world building and it paid off.

Sage is a great character, smart, resourceful and complex enough to carry a series. If I have one complaint it's that the whole "didn't know they were a witch or had witchy family until..." trope was used and I think it's getting a bit overdone, but Webb does present it well.

Recommended for all that enjoy cozies, especially those with a paranormal slant to them. This is an exceptional start to the series and I look forward to seeing what Sage and Callie do next.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Nothing original

And i mean nothing original. Lots of "borrowed" ideas and poor writing. There's no attempt to even hide the unoriginal points.

This is book one of the Wicked Witches of Spellcaster Creek and the main character is Sage Rivers, who has been having quite a bad time of holding any jobs for more than a couple of months. Presently she is working as a sign spinner for Dinosaur Mike’s restaurant, a place she definitely wouldn’t eat, having gone downhill after the previous owner’s kids took over. On top of that she has a waster of a boyfriend who never seems to work or pay any of the bills, but lives with her in a crappy apartment. She goes across to Val’s Diner for her lunch break and Val hands her a letter, addressed to her care of the diner. Weird! It has fancy handwriting on the front and even a wax seal on the back. She reads it and it is supposedly written by her Aunt Delilah, telling her that she has an inheritance waiting for her in Spellcaster Creek, and that she would send Callie to give her directions. She thinks it must be her boyfriend playing another prank on her, but soon finds multiple letters appearing just about everywhere she goes. The weirdest bit is a calico cat that seems to sit and watch her for the rest of the day. She gets home to another bad situation and has to leave, losing her boyfriend and her apartment due to what she witnessed. The next morning the cat, who she realised was talking to her, told her not to go to work, but she thought she was imagining it all and carried on with her normal day, only to find herself losing her job and having to do a runner!

Arriving in Spellcaster Creek, she loves the magical look of it, but still doesn’t think she belongs there, not believing she is a witch at all. She was orphaned at a very young age and never knew her parents and always presumed she had no other family. Now her talking cat is telling her that the Rivers make up about half the population in the popular magical town. Callie the calico cat takes her to a dusty looking shop in the middle of town, originally called Spellbound, which she has inherited, and only she can open as she is the key! No one tells her what happened to her aunt and she eventually finds out she was murdered with a very rare type of poison! The bookshop is in prime location and a businessman wants to buy the shop, which sounds great to her, as she still denies any idea that she is a witch! One of her cousins gets her to touch a book in the shop and she gets the shock of her life when a figure from the book pops out to answer any question she might have. She gets told by her cousins that she is a rare book witch, and people will come into the shop asking for advice and her magic will allow her to find the perfect book to help. Another part of her role in town is to take over from her aunt as the Keeper, working in conjunction with the Guardians who protect the town and the people in it. She meets one of them, Hunter Ironwood, in a dream her first night in the flat above the bookshop, and there is definitely a romantic spark between them, but he isn’t quite human and she may not be sticking around!

Her aunt’s death has not yet been solved and now with the continued interest in the bookshop, it seems she may be in danger as well. When she falls over a body, Hunter is soon on the scene, but doesn’t know whether she could be the killer herself, which is highly unlikely since she knew nothing of magic only days ago, or that she is a target and he needs to protect her. He doesn’t want her going anywhere without him and luckily, some of her work experience gives her a few insights into the victim’s computer, which magical Hunter is not quite as adept at, allowing them to find some clues. As a possible suspect and the new Keeper, she needs to stay in town for the foreseeable future, meaning her leaving and going back to her rubbish life in the human world is not really going to happen. Not that she has much to really go back for, no friends and no home or money. She needs to embrace her new magical life and take the chance to see her recently discovered family and maybe see where any relationship with Hunter might go! Although the latter might cause a bit of jealousy around town. A really enjoyable story with a different feeling twist on a supposed human suddenly finding out they have magic and a family they never knew of, in a hidden magical town. I loved the idea of a book witch and the weird and individual ‘brooms’ that were used to fly around town! I can’t wait to read more of this series and see where the romance goes and how Sage manages the bookshop. I received and ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Bookshop Mystery . . .

Trouble seems to always follow Sage Rivers and she believes she must be cursed to have such terrible luck. Despite her horrible job of spinning signs in the air while wearing a dinosaur outfit in the hot Texas heat for Dinosaur Mike’s crumbling business, she is unwilling to take the diner job that Val repeatedly offers. Val is kind and decent and she doesn’t want to bring disaster on her successful diner. Coming here for her lunch break is the best part of her day! As she was about to leave, Val told her a letter arrived for her. Just touching the envelope made her fingers tingle. It was from a stranger who claimed to be her Aunt Delilah with an inheritance for her; and “Callie” would be arriving to help her find Spellcaster Creek. This had to be a weird prank from her boyfriend Shaun.

Returning to work, her boss Jordan came out and reprimanded her for having her mail sent to the business. This time she crumpled it up and threw it away as a calico cat sat watching her. When she returned home, she found Shaun with a blonde from across the hall and in his drug-addled condition, he told her he would having as many women as he wanted from now on. So she left him. On the way out, she spotted another yellow envelope under her purse – it hadn’t been there when she walked in a few minutes ago. She threw it on the floor thinking it was another of Shaun’s jokes. And the calico cat was sitting on the roof of her car. It jumped off and she drove to a cheap motel. Once again, the calico cat is there and now she thinks she hears a voice. And the sassy little calico cat tells Sage that she is a witch and inherited a bookshop in Spellcaster Creek. As a book witch, she will see a spirit whenever she touches a book! When she finds a dead body encased in a transparent red crystal, Devil’s Ice, she naturally becomes the prime suspect! Can’t she ever get a break?

Since the town doesn’t have police but relies on guardians, Hunter arrived and asked what Sage had done to Scott Jenkins who had wanted to buy her bookshop. (And Aunt Delilah had also been poisoned – was it to get the bookshop?) With no other choice, Sage is going to have to investigate this mystery and find out the real murderer. Will Hunter work on this with her? Will she become the next victim? Or will she start to learn how to use her new witch powers and figure things out?

Potions and Peril begins the Wicked Witches of Spellcaster Creek series with a fun and intriguing introduction story as we meet Sage and learn just how she ended up in this magical place that she’s not too sure she actually believes all this hocus-pocus that supposedly happens around here. I’ve enjoyed Mara Webb’s storytelling and, quite frankly, I was hooked at the idea of a “book witch” and that aspect of the story was so magical, funny, and fits right in with the residents of Spellcaster Creek.

Frankly, it was one mischievous, talkative cat, Callie, who really won my heart and earned every laugh I had while reading Sage and Callie’s adventures. I love a sassy feline companion in Paranormal Cozy Mysteries, and this little calico certainly was a major character in my mind throughout their story. Add in one mysterious guardian, Hunter, and a vile enemy to discover, and I was completely hooked. Of course, at first, Sage doesn’t buy any of this magical stuff that’s being tossed her way. She’s more inclined to take the profits offered and get out of town… until, slowly, but surely Spellcaster Creek’s charm and its residents begin to grow on her, and perhaps she’s ready to start believing in unusual possibilities.

I had fun here, and if you love getting in on the beginning of a fun, magical Paranormal Cozy Mystery series, then you’ll be quickly drawn in as well. Potions and Peril is well-written, has lively dialogue, and fun characters (except for the villain), and definitely is a series that I will follow to find out what happens to Sage, Callie, and Hunter next.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the author or author’s team via Booksprout, and I sincerely thank them for their trust. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Good

An unexpected inheritance and a calico cat, open Sage’s eyes to the magical world, and the fact that she has magic.
As a book witch, Sage can get all kinds of information from her books, information she needs to get comfortable in the town, where it looks like a murderer might well have her in their sights.

A quick, simple paranormal mystery, the setting and premise were interesting and the mystery easily solved. The magical world is intriguing, and there’s something mysterious about Hunter.
There also seems to be something more to Sage’s backstory, but I guess it’s something we learn later on.

It’s a good choice for paranormal cosy mystery fans, though grammar and spelling fusspots will have a few issues, otherwise an enjoyable read.

I loved this story from the first weird happening to the last. The characters are just crazy enough to be both fun and endearing, the plot is easily followed, and the premise was finding out who killed the main character's aunt. the idea of a book witch is novel as well as what happens when she touches a book. I do highly recommend this book.

Bookstore witches and mystery!

Looking for a new fun light read. Promising series. Humor with he's and mystery
Had to get through first couple of chapter and was worried the series was like a lot of other unknown relative dies and struggling female finds out their supernatural but really enjoyed the humor and twists. Looking forward to book2!

Story premise is not bad, although I figured it out really early. What I hated was that it was not edited! As an editor myself, I spent most of the book adding notes for all the errors. Hunter was constantly changed to Hudson. Someone doesn't kn9w how to use search and replace! I will not continue this series due to the lack of editing.

Very weak compared to the other books I've read by this author. The culprit was obvious well before the end and I had to wait and wait for the mc to catch on.

Update:
Books 1-3 in this series are pretty bad. But book 4 was decent. If you're considering this series, just start there. The author does a very thorough backstory recap in every book, so I don't think you'll be missing anything important.

Good read

Book 1 has only witches, warlocks, and familiars, so far, and 1 very down on her luck person who does not know her heritage. There is also murder, mystery, humor, loads of angst, magic, and a very shabby bookshop loaded with thousands of books. Highly entertaining.

A good book that I enjoyed

It had all the ingredients I like: a new witch, a cute calico familiar, a charming magical town, and a bookstore! Sage is a book witch, and wow, she can just find any book she needs and draw the spirit within the book out. Amazing! I liked being a part of her journey to becoming a witch. I did know whodunit it well before Sage, to be honest, it was kind of easy to solve. But the story was imaginative and enjoyable. I really liked Callie the calico, with her magical knowledge combined with the typical aloofness of a cat LOL. Why not give 5 stars then? I don’t know, I just didn’t LOVE it for some reason. But I did really like it! I’m curious to what will happen next!

Although I received an advance copy of this book via Booksprout I am happy to review and recommend it. Great if you've got a spare couple of hours as its easy to read and I loved it!
Sage Rivers finds herself whisked away from her humdrum life as she has an inheritance to claim. She's a great character (I'd love her as a friend!) and so is her cat, Callie. There's also a love interest in Hunter, the local 'cop' and a murder, or three, to solve. There seems to be a lot more fun to come and I can't wait to read it.
