Scriptures To Sing: New And Old

Rate this book
"In recent years there has seemed to be a growing desire among churches and fellowship groups to introduce more direct scriptural content into our congregational songs. It is in response to that desire that Scriptures to Sing has been compiled. Many sources, both new and old, have been consulted, including earlier English Psalters and hymnals, as well as a host of contemporary collections. A wide variety of writers are represented here, such as Isaac Watts, Charles Wesley, Nahum Tate, Fred Kaan, Ralph Carmichael, John W. Peterson, Reginald Barrett-Ayres, and many others. Some of these songs and choruses have grown into common use in the past few years without the usual writer credits. In addition, we are pleased to introduce here a number of new hymns and songs for the first time, and some were commissioned especially for this collection. While we have not tried to limit ourselves to those texts taken varbatim from the Scriptures, we have been careful to select only those songs which seem to clearly communicate biblical truths. Both texts and musical settings have been chosen for their effectiveness for congregational singing. It is our hope that this volume will become part of a continuing effort to provide the Church with congregational hymns and choruses which clearly speak God's eternal truth." (from book)
