Jazz Nemesis #2

The Refugees

Rate this book
When Jasmine Marshall and her fellow hostages finally won back their freedom and escaped from the mysterious town of Kolob, they believed they would be rejoining civilization and resuming their normal lives. To their horror, what they found on the other side of the dense forest was far worse than anything they could have ever imagined.
On December 21, 2012, an unprecedented series of global attacks changed the world and shook the very foundations of society. A significant portion of the Earth's population died following exposure to an illness that the media dubbed 'The Maya Virus', leaving the survivors to examine and question their humanity as vampires, demigods, and zombies crawled from the body bags of the aftermath. Valkyries, demons and other ancient creatures that had lain in wait for centuries began to emerge, seeking to claim the spoils and feed on what remains of mankind. Panicked governments are struggling to maintain order - some of them at any cost.
With her newfound empathic power driving her toward the tumultuous precipice of insanity, Jazz will now face the single greatest tribulations of her life. Will she choose to follow the man she loves despite his many unsettling secrets, or will she succumb to a treacherous phantom from her troubled past who could very well provide the ultimate key to her survival?

L. M. Smith is the author of the Jazz Nemesis series, a gritty, genre-bending saga where faith meets fallout and humor still finds room to breathe. Her work fuses dark psychology with mythic world-building, creating stories that are equal parts cinematic and uncomfortably human.

She lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Charles—the most perfect man on earth—a sassy black cat named Pandora, and a pack of extremely wacky Great Danes named Kratos, Freya, Xena, and sometimes Roxy, one of her seventeen grandpuppies, who visits often enough to count as family. When she’s not writing, she’s gaming (PlayStation over Xbox, every time), overanalyzing dialogue like it’s an Olympic sport, or making elaborate plans to finish all the projects she started yesterday.

In addition to Jazz Nemesis, Smith is at work on a memoir and several nonfiction histories exploring monarchy, madness, and the mechanics of power.

I read the first book , The Citizens, and loved it! I had assumed this book would be just like that one, I was wrong, its sooo much better!!

I can totally see this book becoming a TV series , or a series of movies!
Love the Series!!
I don't want to give anything away about this book, but there will be characters you love and some you just can't wait until they meet their doom. The ending threw me for a loop, and I , for one, will be standing in line to buy the next book as soon as it comes out!
what are you waiting for? Start reading!

The Refugees ~ written by L.M. Smith
Book 2 of the Jazz Nemesis Novels

The Citizens (Book 1) narrowly escaped the creepy town of Kolob and the sadistic Mayor E with their lives, praying for the chance to return to their homes and families.

As The Refugees attempt to find their way back to their homes, they begin to witness even bigger horrors than they ever imagined were even possible. To their dismay, they realize that the world they once knew is no more - it has been forever and irreparably changed.

As Jazz, Piper, Beck, Kaori and Gordon desperately try to hide from the authorities who are out to recapture them, they are found and taken in by Jovhanna, a welcoming, yet strange and very unsettling woman who agrees to hide them, promising them safety and aid to return to their homes and families..... but are they *really* safe?

Bravo!! The Refugees is another literary triumph by author L.M. Smith, and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that her work will be celebrated and enjoyed by millions. My hope is that some day, the Jazz Nemesis Novels will be made into movies - they are that good.

This is a MUST READ, Book 2 in the Jazz Nemesis Novels. If you have not already read Book 1 (The Citizens) - I suggest you start there, and then dive right into The Refugees (Book 2). You won't be disappointed!

I can't wait for Book 3!!

This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review - and I enjoyed every moment of it!

The Refugees
A Jazz Nemesis novel vol. 2

When I read vol. 1, The Citizens, I couldn’t put it down. I often get a little apprehensive when reading a second book in a series though luckily within pages I knew this book may be even better than the first.

Incredibly well written, descriptive and fast paced, you just won’t be able to put this down. There are so many twists and turns, every reader will be gripped throughout. I always loved Beck, but when Gabriel was introduced, my loyalties and affections started to shift - I can’t wait to see where that triangle is going to lead and who Jazz chooses.

Now I just have to wait patiently for vol. 3.

I received a copy for the author in return for an honest review.

Some books stick with you, and others don’t. Some will leave you thinking about them months after you’ve read them, and some…well, there are some I really can’t wait to delete from my kindle when I’m done. The Refugees without a doubt falls into the category of books I’ll remember long after I’ve finished reading it. I’ve come to expect a certain pizzazz from this author which can only be found in her writing and the way she shapes her characters. As with The Citizens, the first book in this series, L.M. Smith again does not disappoint and outdid herself with this second instalment in the Jazz Nemesis series.

The first book ended with an incredible cliff-hanger which left me wanting to beg the author – even resort to bribing if I had to – to hurry up with the second book. Of course, sometimes it happens in a series that the second book leaves you feeling a little disappointed as it doesn’t always recapture the magic of the first book and that feeling of oh-gosh-I-hope-this-book-never-ends. Several chapters into the story I was relieved to find that this won’t be the case, even though the first few chapters had me slightly worried that the story might move in a less interesting direction and not regain the hold over me like it did with The Citizens. I absolutely loved the first book and it was constantly my book recommendation of choice.

Book two doesn’t exactly pick-up where the previous book had left off as I hoped it would, but instead takes the reader deeper into a richly illustrated, post-apocalyptic world buckling under the onslaught of the Maya Virus. So, what then can you expect from The Refugees? Well, definitely a few interesting new characters with powers of their own, and a heck of a lot more plot twists from the characters we already know and adore from the previous book. It was great to see how the author continued to develop Jazz and her posse, and then threw me for a loop when she brought in hottie Gabriel. Hmmmmm, a darn good-looking development to the storyline right there… Anyhoo, this of course creates what I consider the dreaded love-triangle (okay, that’s just me – love-triangles and I don’t mesh). Nonetheless, I’m curious to know who Jazz is going to end up with by the end of the series. I know who I’m rooting for, but I ain’t telling.

I’ve gotten used to the author’s style of writing in the first book – smooth, meticulous, easy to digest, and without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary details. She maintains this writing style in The Refugees and although it is a really long read with over five hundred pages, I never got the feeling that world- and character building descriptions were used as page-fillers to bore the reader into oblivion, as is sometimes the case in a number of dystopian novels.

This is a series, after all, so naturally another epic cliff-hanger ending has me plotting and scheming all over again on how I might convince the author to hurry up with the third book. The Refugees is a captivating, exhilarating read filled with mystery and endless surprising twists. If you haven’t read the first book yet, you might not understand what I’m so excited about. Trust me though, once it gets you hooked, it’s nearly impossible to put it down. Kudos to the author for once more keeping me glued to the pages of another terrific Jazz Nemesis treat.

I don't even know where to start. This book, like the one that came before is amazing. You five right in an aren't released until the blurb in the back about meeting the author. The lengths the author went to to make this fictional novel believable was spectacular. I absolutely love, love, loved this book. I am very interested in reading what happens next to Jazz, Beck, Piper, and Kaori. Keep up the amazing work, the world you created is plausible and frightening and definitely left this reader wanting more.

Wow! This book pulls you into a whole new world at the very beginning and does not let you out even at the end!! You follow the gang through this world after an armageddon of sorts, they are looking for their family members. You become so attatched to each character and never want the story to end! I allowed myself one chapter at a time to try to make the book last. OMG the ending! I need more!! WaAR

"The Refugees" by L.M. Smith is the sequel to Citizens, which I was given by the author in exchange for an honest review. This one I got myself because I needed to know what was going to happen next. The story is every bit as good as the first one, once again the author manages to keep up the suspense throughout and draws us into this new world.
Having escaped their imprisonment in Kolob the protagonists are entering a catastrophic environment where the 'Maya-Virus' is claiming lives and causes chaos and disorder.
Once again stuck the heroes are determined to cross blockades and closed borders to locate and reunite with their families.
As with most second instalments the characters are now well established and begin to clash a little, develop and enable the cast to become familiar to the readers. The former Citizens were study objects in Kolob for their supernatural abilities and the strange virus adds a new dimension to their individual physical or species'differences'.
The Refugees is a great sequel in that it keeps the main elements of its predecessor but playfully brings in new ideas and creatures, while giving us a completely new environment and scenario to witness. I could not imagine how Smith would follow her big first act and expected the Citizens to be hunted by another medical research team. I am very grateful that - although the author might have written such a book very well - we are offered something so different and entertaining.

'I have recieved this book from the author in return of an honest opinion.'

First off I have to say that I only gave this book five stars because the scoring system wouldn't let me go any higher. If I could go back and grade it what I want to then it would be ten stars. I'm going to start with the only problems that I had with this book because that list is much shorter than everything I liked no, loved. It started out just a little bit confusing in the prologue only because it was a bit different from the first book and I wasn't expecting it to begin that way. I didn't stop there though, I pressed on and realized what it was setting me up for....suspense. Which brings me to my other problem. Now I have to wait for book 3 to come out to know what happens next....grrrr. This book is amazingly creative and I can't phathom the amount of creativity and mental draining it must've taken to write it. Emotionally it was like going to your favorite theme park, finding your favorite rides and jumping on each of them back to back then riding them all over again. There were new characters, such as Jo, Raphael, the Twins (*giggles* I won't spoil that), Mama and Gabriel. We do find out a little more about Jazz's father as well. There were a lot of unexpected twists, turns, highs and lows. Full of action, adventure, romance, murder, suspense, utter dispair and you name it, this book has got it...no joke. The cliffhanger did real me in even more, if that's even possible, as I am sitting on my hands waiting for the next book to come out. I'm sure I will end up reading The Refugees all over again because, as I said, it was your favorite theme park ride. And no matter how many times you ride it at the end of it when you think something else will happen it suddenly stops and you just have to say "AGAIN!". Well done L.M. Smith! ~AC Wright (WaAr)~

Kolob left me stagering. A town run by a crazy despot and his aim...
Well in The Refugee I got some answer but more questions than ever.

This book is a mixture of dystopian, paranormal, romance, thriller, and some more genres. Sounds as if the author went in and tried it all doesnt it?

She did not. The plot is well planned, the characters well developed. The central theme of " what if." explored tonit,s fullest.

Jazz, our main protagonist grows up in this book and gets a voice all her own. A very destinct one. One troubling factor is that she changes towards the end once again and her reason for change is not apparent. Beck is back and better than ever, no literally, he is as close to perfect as a man can be. One thing though, he is no longer perfect for Jazz. Enter the Scott and with it a hand held fan to ward off the hot flushes. Oh my.....

This book is far more character driven than the first in the series and I look forward to seeing where the author is leading us....is it towards a new start or Armageddon?

Review 6******

I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

This is the second book in the Jazz Nemesis series. WOW! I thought the first book was exciting, but this book takes it to another level! I absolutely LOVED it!

Jasmine Marshall (Jazz to her friends) is an intriguing character. Thanks to the experiments done to her (and her friends) in the first book, she has the ability to feel emotions of those around her. Together with the others in her group, Piper (a vampire), Gordon (a psychic), Kaori (teenager with power of telekinesis) and Beck (unknown powers), Jazz escapes from Kolob, and they find themselves travelling to the city of Tangier. There they meet Jovhanna, a woman who has set up a shelter for the survivors of "The Maya Virus". However, is everything as it seems?

This is a fast paced, thrilling ride of rollercoaster proportions! The story is so well written, it felt like I was actually there! I found myself turning the pages, just to find out what mysteries would be solved, only to have more questions pop up! To say that this book is 512 pages long, it didn't feel long enough for me! I love all the characters, even the enigmatic Jovhanna. Her reasons for joining the group was very suspicious to me, but as the story unfolded and I finally had my answer, I still didn't feel any malice towards her. However, with the addition of Gabriel, the hotness level of the guys vying for Jazz's attention sure perked me up! Smokin' is all I'm saying! :)_ (me with drool! lol!). The ending of the book certainly left me wanting to know more! I just hope that my fears are unfounded about Jazz, as she is acting very odd! I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!

L.M. Smith has written a fantastic psychological thriller that also crosses several other genres, especially paranormal fiction and dystopian fiction. This story has had my heart pounding with dread and excitement in equal measure! To say that this is only the second book I have read by this author, I have definitely added her to my favourites list, and will read any of her books in the future.
I highly recommend this book if you love psychological thrillers, paranormal fiction, dystopian fiction, horror or urban fantasy. - Lynn Worton

I received this book to give an honest review.

You get a lot more drama, character liking and disliking a lot more than you did in the first book. You get answers to questions and the ending has you going WHAT! So when will book three be out.

Jazz and the gang have escaped Kolob but they are just not safe as of yet. They want to go home to their families. Half way through you see that there are plenty of twists and turns and going oh my what is that character thinking!!

The world is going though some crazy things and it is a challenge just to get back home for all of the characters. You see the relationship between Jazz and Beck changed and when she had time to confront him she never did. I found myself so pissed with Jazz for not standing up until the last minute of things. I just wanted to shake her.

Now when the new character Gabe came into play lets just say I LOVED him! He has a sense of humor that was needed for all of them.

I would recommend you read book 1 before you read this one so you know what is going on and why.

This is a 'road trip' story. A group of humans, having been kidnapped, tortured and experimented on, escape and attempt to make their way from Africa to Europe, while the world hovers on the brink of disaster. Their ultimate destination is Great Britain, the family home of Piper whose 'gift' after her exposure to the virus, has turned her into a vampire. Jasmine, the main character of the book is an empath, untrained and therefore open to the emotions and suggestive thoughts of those around her.

It took me a while to get into this book, maybe because I hadn't read the first in the series but also, the writing style didn't suit me. I'm glad to say that the book picked up for me at about halfway and I did enjoy it. It is a long book and I did find myself skipping bits at times but again, I think it was the style rather than the story.

This is a well conceived book and if humans with unusual mutations is your bag, you'll love it!

Fantastic follow up novel to the citizens. We follow the Kolob escapees as they travel across several continents to make it back to what is left after the virus. But not everything is as it seems. Find out finally 'what' Beck is. Meet some new people along the way some good and some not so nice as the appear. A new adventure is around every corner as they desperately attempt to get home. Not everyone will make it alive.

If you enjoyed the citizens then you will not be able to resist finding out what happens next. I really enjoyed reading this and can't wait to find out what secrets the sanctuary might hold.

Not your typical run-of-the-mill paranormal/science fiction storyline. Keeps you guessing at every turn of the page, searching for answers that Jazz is just as desperate to find. The surprising twists and turns don't just stop with The Citizens...it most definitely follows The Refugees...

More people need to hear about this series!

I couldn't put this book down. You've got to read the first one "The Citizens" first which is also really good. This story is very original. It has a love triangle and lots of crazy twists. I loved it. It has a bit of bad language but not a ton. I can't wait until the next book comes out. I loved it!
