De Wolf: Geheimzinnige Jager van de Wildernis

Rate this book

Many incorrect facts about wolves but the beautiful photo's make up for it. If you want to learn about wolves, I recommend another wolf book, but if you just want a gorgeous picturebook about them, get this right away.

Beautiful pictures of wolves, but sadly a lot of nonsense about wolves. Especially the alpha, beta… myths are annoying. The photographs are stunning though.

I have always idolized Shaun Ellis and the work that he does with wolves. With Ellis providing the narration and Monty Sloan providing absolutely outstanding photographs, this is a fabulous "must have" book for any wolf enthusiast.
Although I have been studying wolves all of my life, Shaun Ellis was still able to teach me things about them that I did not know. I relished every single page, every word, every photograph.

Ellis' 'Wolves' contains Beautiful photography, is Filled with information, and writes Passionate with a plea to save these incredible creatures. I learned so much in this one documentation. Highly worth not just the read but the buy. The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" has never rung so true to me as with this book. Absolutely incredible.

This book has absolute beautiful pictures. There was way too much redundancy between the picture descriptions and the reading.

The photos are stunning and are the best part of the book. I've read many wolf books, albeit most were written 15-20 years ago. I find Ellis' claims about pack behavior interesting, as I've never read those observations from other wolf researchers, and I wonder what he is basing this on as no other wolf data that I've seen supports his claims. The information in the photo captions were repetitive and needed fresh information. There are far better wolf books out there. Read this one for the photographs.

I had high expectations since this book is widely read and well rated. However, this book sadly contains more idle wishes and fairy tales than actual factual information. A few (of many!) absurd examples: alpha females choose baby sitters for their cubs, alpha males have specific fur colors, the depth of wolf growling has a connection to its rank... None of these claims are rooted in scientific evidence.

If you are looking for serious information on wolves, do yourself a favor and don't read this book.

I accidentally ran across this book while sitting in an office waiting for my appointment. The small amount that I read amazed me about how little I knew about these amazing animals. When I returned home from my appointment, I purchased the book. It is beautiful, the pictures are amazing, and the copy made me shake my head in amazement. I truly enjoyed this book and have returned to it many times as I quote information to others.

It is a beautiful book loaded with information.

Excellent photographs but not the best book for info on behavior. Basic information is provided on pack structure (including some info I’ve never come across before, which calls for more research), hunting, breeding & conservation. Photo captions don’t always match the context very well, and captions also repeat information that was read just a few pages before.

A beautiful book that really catches the spirit of one of Earth's most beautiful creatures. The information is insightful and the images are just out of this world. If you know anyone that loves wolves then this book would be the perfect gift.

The text is poor quality, with mistakes and a weird tone. The pictures however are phenomenal.

This is a stunning book. The photos by Monty Sloan show every side and emotion of the beautiful but much maligned wolf from their skill and strength as a hunter and protector to their gentle and playful characters.
Alongside that you have the text by the incredible Shaun Ellis who I was lucky enough to meet along with his wolf pack. If you ever have the opportunity to meet him grab it with both hands! His love and dedication to his wolves and to all animals shines through his very pores!
I love this book and pick it up regularly to enter the world of these breathtakingly powerful and intelligent animals.

This informative book is loved by my son and anyone that has read it in our house. My son loves Wolves and we got this book for him for his 8th birthday and at 14 years old, it is still one of his favorite books. The book is best suited for students, 3rd grade and above, or it can also be used as a picture book for K through 2nd-grade students. This book holds valuable information about all aspects of wolves - their markings, family structure, food, and etc. while having lots of pictures to support the text and information. Teachers can use this book for a science lesson on habitats or needs of wild animals. Kids and adults will enjoy this book while learning all about Wolves in the wild.

I also loved the amazing pictures that supported the text.
Recommended to every wolf lover who wants to learn a little more about those wonderful creatures.

I loved this book. The photography by Monty Sloan is breathtaking. The wolves are so beautiful. And the narration by Shaun Ellis is wonderful and informative. I knew wolves lived in complex groups, but the examples that are given here make you realize there's much more to these intelligent animals that modern society has ever realized. But ancient cultures across the world did know this, and often revered and honored this noble relative of our beloved domestic dogs.
