Finding Mercy isn’t your average romance. So don’t expect the express track to love.

Justin is an ex soldier scarred by the mission he alone survived. Bombarded by the press trying to pry the story from him he finds his home among a small mountain town. Reclusive and drinking too much he’s blindsided by the hurricane that is Mercy. I’m not sure what to say about Justin as a hero. He’s more anti hero than anything because he’s so damaged and closed off. Watching his journey was painful and awe inspiring. I give props to Jackson for her ability to really capture the anguish, and reality of suffering from PTSD.

Mercy… I can’t say I was fond of her. She hid her past from Justin and I never got over it. Especially since it ended up exploding and causing him grief. Brass, fearless, and self-centered she acts before she thinks. She approached Justin under false pretenses, but she’s taken by surprise when she loses her heart.

The mysteries revealed are interesting, but I couldn’t get past the betrayal, so for me this was more of an anti-romance story.

I love this book! *Note: I have a slight obsession with “Prepping” and combine that with a sexy romance, and I’m one happy girl

Set among the backdrop of a beautiful and remote Wyoming town, this romance has so many intriguing elements: a war hero, a troubled newscaster, and a community of Doomsday preppers.

At the heart of the story is Justin and Mercy’s romance. Their undeniable chemistry leads them to a no-strings-attached relationship; though they quickly realize they mean much more to each other. Their story of sacrifice, love, and redemption is multi-layered, emotional and well-written. Each incredibly strong in their own way, Justin and Mercy must make difficult choices and sacrifices in order to be together, find peace, and become who they truly want to be.

The intriguing subplot of potential Doomsday, heart-pounding action, and Mercy and Justin’s spicy sexual attraction and ultimately sweet romance combine to make this a creative and throughly enjoyable read.

I love to lose myself in a book and especially one that is well written and researched. Jackson's story about war hero, Justin Redway, puts you in the front seat as she gives such riveting detail of RPG's, ambushes, and fatalistic air-strikes meant to destroy everything in its path. The gruesome, yet very realistic descriptions may be hard to swallow for some. But her authenticity shines through and makes a very compelling read.

Justin's decision to call the air strike that lead to the tragic deaths of his friends haunt him. And the guilt that comes with it is a heavy burden to bare. After his long recovery, he takes off for the sparsely populated town of Evan's Point in the wilds of Wyoming, where he helps an elderly rancher take care of his cattle. His story about what happened in Afghanistan remains a mystery -- one that every reporter and the media are dying to get their hands on.

Mercy Evans has returned to Evan's Point where her grandfather, Will Mercy, runs a cattle ranch. She has been suspended and awaits the verdict of a lawsuit against Cheyenne's Nine News. She is desperate to get her position back and when she runs into Justin Redway, she sees him as her ticket to salvaging her career.

But the attraction between the two is instantaneous-explosive-and both find refuge in each other's arms.

Jackson paints a vivid picture with her words and puts the reader through the paces as you experience this emotional journey of forgiveness and healing.

I look forward to reading more from this amazing author.

I always enjoy reading military heroes and Justin was no exception. Survivor guilt is a theme I explore often in my own writing. I found Justin, as a character, to be believable and true to what I’d expect.

I liked that Mercy was career-driven, even so much that she wanted to get close to Justin just to get his story (at first). She was flawed and that made her more interesting and gave the story somewhere to go (and gave her change of heart more punch). The only thing I didn’t care for was the apparent lack of concern about a certain teenager she’d interviewed.

There were some things I found odd though, and it impacted my enjoyment of the story. Things having to do with how Mercy figures out who Justin is; the reason for calling in an airstrike as well as what was in the convoy (imaginative for sure); the role of the town’s ‘compound’ in this couple’s story…

The sex came into the story too early, before I really cared about these two characters, but their ‘first time’ was handled a little differently which I liked. Some of the scenes needed more detail, like the helicopter crash scene; it could have been used so much more effectively as a conduit for Justin’s continued ‘recovery.’

In short, a good story but felt short/rushed; I think I would have enjoyed delving deeper into the characters.

As this is the first prepper romance I've read, I found it interesting to find out how the preppers live, and the levels they go to in order to prepare for a future disaster.

Though Finding Mercy is much more than a prepper story. It's the tale of two wounded people who thought they were doing what was best, and got burned (literally and figuratively) in the process. They both settle in Evans Point, a small town in the middle of nowhere, to hide from their pasts, get over the mistakes they made. And when they meet, they help to heal each other's wounds, show each other that they can have a future. But when their pasts come back to haunt them, any possibility of a future together is ripped apart.

Finding Mercy is a well-written story where D.L. Jackson not only displays her military experiences, but also the life of a prepper and the resident of a small town. I highly recommend this story as well as any book by this author.

D L Jackson's imagination never fails to amaze me, and Finding Mercy was no exception to that. For any reader, whether they are preppers or not, Mercy and Justin are two well written, flawed characters tailor made for each other, and the sparks fly when they figure that out. Evan's Point provides a fascinating setting for the two to come together, separate and move on to the perfect ending.
