Woman Up!: Your Guide to Success in Engineering and Tech

Rate this book
Across the globe, engineering is still a male-dominated field. As a result, many women experience both internal and external obstacles that keep them from advancing as quickly or as high as they would like.
Anat Rapoport has been there. She knows the loneliness that comes with being the only woman in the room. In Woman Up!, Anat uses her experience climbing the corporate and startup ladders-and helping other women do the same-to discuss common obstacles and how to beat them, as well as to provide tools and best practices.
In addition to practical guidance for overcoming discrimination, loneliness, self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and low confidence, Anat walks you through every step of the process to become brazen and brave enough to climb the ranks as high as you want-from a software engineer all the way up to VP.

Woman Up! is an insightful book by Anat Rapoport. Much of the book’s content and resource spirals off from her own experience in the corporate world, as she has had career in high tech like engineering and software. The premise of the book is engaging and interesting, yet it fosters hopes of growth for womenfolk across the world.

There is no denial that in the growing economies in high tech careers still men play the main role, women are sidelined even if they have all the qualities to lead and collect praise. Due to extreme patriarchal temperament, women face issues in high tech field careers at all levels.
This book charts out a roadmap for women as how they can advance and position themselves in high tech career jobs. Anat went through a spectrum of ups and downs in her career, grappled with diffidence, imposter syndrome, discrimination, and so on. Her story of resilience and determination is through ups and downs emotionally and psychologically while dealing with motherhood, maternity leave, fertility treatment, etc.

Through this book she is here to guide women with careers in high tech industry. Right from finding a job to becoming a manager and handling teams to preparing for big positions like director and VP, the book is full of stories from her life and others. While focusing advancement in career for women, at many junctures a comparative study has been done between men and women in high-tech career stints. But that is not a low point, leveraging learning from men on job, she has resurrected herself for better terms.

The scope of the book is beyond any self-help genre, it acts like a concerned voice for women out there, struggling for a rise in position. While reading this book, I got to know that women reaching to higher levels is not a distant dream anymore. The book suggests a lot of guidance for women active in the corporate jobs. If you have a mentor like Anat Rapoport, you are destined to grow and prosper.

Woman Up! is a powerful resource that maps out the entire career journey in tech, from starting as a junior developer all the way to reaching VP-level leadership. The book is written by a woman for women, and it shines with thoughtful, progressive insights that feel both practical and inspiring.

I especially appreciated how it covers the real challenges of the industry: interviewing, navigating tech debt, working toward promotions, and building a clear path to success. It reads almost like a timeline and guidance manual, making it easy to see how each stage builds on the next.

The only part that pulled me out of the flow was the focus on motherhood. While I recognize this is an important topic for many, it won’t resonate with everyone, and I felt it disrupted the otherwise seamless progression of the book.

Overall, though, this is an excellent guide that I’d recommend to women in tech at any stage of their career. It’s empowering, practical, and a valuable companion for climbing the ladder with confidence.
