Captain Baylor’s Big, Bad Book on Cowboy Action Shooting™
The Big Bad Book on Cowboy Action Shooting tells you everything you ever wanted to know about this fast-growing sport. Everything “What is it?” to “How can I sign up?” is covered in this comprehensive compendium of everything you wanted to know about Cowboy Action Shooting.
Cowboy Action Shooting™ is a shooting sport that uses replica firearms from the old west. Using “six shooters,” a pistol caliber lever action rifle and a 19th century shotgun competitors compete in real or imaginary shootouts. Dressed in western attire a competitor may shoot 4 to 6 shootout scenarios (aka stages) each day.
Cowboy Action shooting, while using real firearms and real ammunition is an extremely safe sport as the competitors and the rules of the game emphasize safety first and fun second.
The governing body is the Single Action Shooting Society™, or SASS® an international membership organization formed in 1987 to preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting.
In addition to several hundred local clubs SASS has state, regional, national, and World championship matches with competitors from a few hundred to close to a thousand. END of TRAIL™, the SASS World Championship in Arizona, and Land Run, the SASS National Championship in Oklahoma, are huge events, lasting about a week each. These events are capped off with an awards banquet. Contestants shoot and party in costume. These contestants are competing for trophies and buckles, and, of course, bragging rights. By the way, there are no professional Cowboy Action Shooters. One fundamental tenant of this sport is you are in it for the fun.
When you join SASS, you will receive a unique badge with your membership number and you pick your own unique alias, real or imaginary. SASS has issued over 113 thousand memberships. About 60 thousand of these still compete and about 250 new members join each month.
In this book long time columnist for The Cowboy Chronicle, Captain Baylor takes a potential beginner from attending his first match as a spectator to the purchase of the guns and gear of the sport and shooting matches safely.
