Andy has a gift. With a touch he can give anyone abilities. They will never again be sick, enjoy enhanced speed, strength, and senses, and be granted powers most only read or dream about. However, a gang of vampire like people, led by Marcus, have discovered what Andy can do and will stop at nothing to capture him. While trying to escape from them, Andy meets Mike and John and gifts them. It falls upon Mike, John, and others Andy has gifted to protect him from the gang. In the process, they sharpen their talents against each other, build relationships, and prepare for what promised to be the fight of their lives.
As a child I always loved reading comic books and other light reading. I was never really one to read books of deep substance. I remember taking my lunch money in seventh grade and using it to buy comic books now and then. My parents were not happy when they figured out what I was doing and took my small collection away from me. It hurt watching them be thrown into the trash. Being a preacher's son was different, I was not allowed such books. After high school however, I collected them for a while before finally giving my collection to a young man who now writes for Marvel Comics. I moved on to reading novels, still lighter in nature for the most part. The Hobbit and The Talisman were the two I liked the most. I probably read The Talisman at least four or five times. If it had magic, action, supernatural abilities, I was in. In the past few years I read the Twilight Saga and most all of the World of Warcraft novels. Yes, I know, it is a video game but the books are fantastic and I found each of them hard to put down. In the summer of 2009 I decided to start writing a book of my own. I had the time and I was feeling creative so I began. At first I was pouring words onto my screen as fast as I could type. After page ten, I started slowing down. Two years later, I had not made it to page 40 yet. Finally, in 2011 I became more serious and finished writing "Gifted" in the summer of 2012. As long as it took me to finish writing the book, I never dreamed how dificult it would be to edit it. It seemed that every time I read it I found more errors. I am sure if I were to go through it again, I would find a period out of place. I am also sure that if an English major were to read it, they would find ways of improving it. I sent many query letters and recieved many rejection letters. After some research I found I could self publish on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. With some help from a fellow author, I obtained a nice looking cover and now am working on promoting the book. Gifted is the first of what will be a trilogy as I have already started on the second book tentively called Gifted: Birth of a Vampire.
The description of the book really got me interested and the beginning of the book was really good, but then:
- too many changes of perspective (especially in the fighting scenes) - constant adding of new characters and their abilities, the reader is bound to get confused with all these names (changes of perspective don't help here either) - repetitive use of words (in the fighting scenes again, I counted a total of 8x "man"/"men"/"the first man"/"the second man" on one page) - no character development as far as I can tell
I'm not sure whether I should continue reading it.
