From one of the most celebrated and beloved comedians and actors of our time, George Lopez, comes this hilarious, touching, and often wacky chronicle of life after fifty.
George Lopez just hit the half-century mark and the reset button on his life. Newly single and ready to embrace life, George was excited to turn fifty. It would be a welcome new phase in his life, a chance to say goodbye to a decade that included a kidney transplant and a divorce. But when he looked around a room full of his childhood friends, all gathered to celebrate his birthday, many now bald or overweight, it suddenly hit him that he was old.
What happened? And more importantly, what was he going to do about it? George learns the hard way that when you turn 50, everything changes. You pull a muscle in your sleep. You avoid mirrors at all costs, and always, always wear a robe. You have to schedule an appointment to have sex. You have to dye your hair and buy a bathtub with a door.
As George learns to embrace life after fifty, he invites readers into his world, sharing the ups and downs of getting older—from his relationship with a much younger woman to a bizarre session with a pet psychic, to a trip behind-the-scenes at his tumultuous two years at Lopez Tonight , to an intimate look at his sacred ground, the golf course—and, for the first time, he reveals in moving detail, the story of the battle for his life against kidney disease.
I’m Not Gonna Lie will make you laugh at yourself, cry about yourself, and look at turning fifty in a way you never would’ve imagined—through the eyes of George Lopez.
This book shows the comedic genius of George Lopez. Even though I am only 23, I appreciated Lopez detailing the beauty and horrors of turning 50. I would have rated it a 5, but the rambles about golf I could have done without. Other than that, I think anyone that enjoys George Lopez will enjoy this book.
So far in the book I'm starting to realize that George may be a funny comedian, however, his book shows he can be a ugly human being. From calling women fat to dissing his ex wife even after she gave him a kidney!
I'll finish this book and I hope that he gives me something to like him about...
UPDATE: I finished the book a couple of weeks ago and I didn't change my opinion about him. Although he is a philanthropist, that is nothing compared to the type of human he is. It reminds me of people who are beautiful on the outside, but are very ugly inside. It doesn't nothing if the two don't match.
I'm actually surprised by how little I enjoyed this book when I have enjoyed Lopez's comedy for many years. Maybe because this is the second book, but there is very little about his childhood outside of setting up for a laugh. It doesn't have any depth, aside from the late chapter about his kidney failure. Most of all, it felt like one complaint after another, that is supposed to be humourous, but instead is a little cringe-worthy.
The two autobiographies by Jewish comedians had less kvetching than this book. I'm not gonna lie: I was disappointed.
Im not gonna lie by George Lopez is a very funny book. I found myself laughing throughout the whole thing. In the book he talks a lot about his life experiences, but mostly about wat it was like for him when he turned 50. The things that he used to do every day, are not easy anymore. The things he never worried about, are starting to bother him. He talks about his love for golf, and tells funny stories about when he was a child. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good laugh.
I could relate to many of the stages he went through in approaching 50 since I'm knocking on that door myself. He has hilarious outlook on certain milestones, but also some penetrating introspection. It was interesting learning what was going on in his own life, behind the scenes of his TV series.
I appreciated George Lopez bringing aging to a comical light. It was tastefully written. For him to tell of his health scares could only help someone else. Must read...
George Lopez is a true genius and I loved this book. His book is aimed towards people turning 50, but his stories are universal. Sometimes he would talk about golf a lot which I am not too into, but he still managed to make it funny. I found myself laughing through the whole book even though he was talking about his life which I could not relate to. We were able to look behind the scenes of George Lopez's life, looking at all of the milestones in his life, but there was also penetrating introspection. Also I love how George Lopez talked about the health scares in his life, and is bringing light to the problem of sucking it up and pretending that you are not in pain before it's too late. I was not expecting anything too great when I started this book, because he is old and I thought I couldn't put myself in his shoes, but I was surprisingly wrong. I laughed at many points during the book like, "I remember when I was a kid playing in the backyard on a hot summer day, as the day wore on I remember anticipating the arrival of the ice-cream man. I lived for the ice-cream man, the jingle coming down the street made my whole day. But you had to keep your ears open and not get distracted or you might miss him. I'd be in the backyard playing with a ball or something and I would hear the jingle of the ice-cream truck in the distance and i'd stop whatever I was doing. It's him, oh wait nah thats not him, oh wait that is him. I would race out of the backyard, I would pull up on the latch of the gate, and no, the latch was stuck, the gate was jammed it wouldn't open. I pulled on the gate with everything I had, it creaked, scraped, and finally it opened. I made it out of the backyard and into the front of the house just in time, to see the back of the ice-cream truck disappearing around the corner" (Lopez 143). I loved this book way more than I had thought I would, and now it is one of my favorites all time.
A fun, laid back, comedic look at reaching a milestone birthday. As a Latino male, growing up a few years after George and on the opposite coast, I still related to his story, his early life, his dreams, hopes and aspirations. I too love golf as much as he does and it has taught me lessons later in my life.
George weaves a fun story, a life lived, with life lessons and warnings but delivers them without bringing you down but waking you up to the realities of life.
Made me laugh out loud at many points. I may be 20-something, but I found Lopez's stories about being 50 to be hilarious and true. Something I've noticed about comedy/humor books: they are better if you don't know the author's work very much.
I'm a fan of G.L. and I can relate to getting older. The stories are mostly funny. It was good. Nothing great. And if you're not expecting something great you will probably like this book.
I’m not going to lie by Geroge Lopez. What I liked about the book is that he talks about how he turned fifty and how his life is doing right now. It was also a funny book to read because he had jokes in his book. I feel happyIi feel this way because he had made it funny and how the book was made it was a good and funny book to read. I connect with this book in real life because that is how I felt when I turned 15 2 months ago in October I felt like an old man but I only turned 15 and I have so many years until I turn 40. I would recommend this book if you like comedy books like to be funny and want to know about George Lopez'lifestylee
I enjoyed this book. There were several laugh out loud parts that were extremely funny. Being over 50, I could really relate to many of the observations in the book. At times it seemed to ramble a bit and wander away from the specific topic that was introduced but it did come back and wrap each topic up. Not knowing alot about George Lopez before reading this book, I found the parts where he talked about his upbringing and his kidney disease interesting and informative. Overall it was a very enjoyable and good read.
If you enjoy Lopez's humor, you will probably enjoy this book. I thought it was humorous, and it was nice to learn more about Lopez. The audio, narrated by Lopez, was entertaining and easy listening.
