This one is okay, not the best western I've read but there is something about the idea of a different kind of hero and John Henry Sixkiller is that. I have a weekness for westerns so I try and read as many as I can. I Have to thank #Netgalley and #Kensington for letting me read #Blood for Blood by William W. Johnstone.

This review originally published in Looking For a Good Book. Rated 4.0 of 5

This is now the third William W. Johnstone (and J.A. Johnstone) book that I've read, which was part of my goal for "Western Week." Like the other two, I enjoyed the read, found the main character interesting and somewhat unique while still being true to the macho-and-above-average man who western heroes tend to emulate, though the book also felt a little 'padded' - extending narrative to fill the pages to complete a book length.

Blood for Blood is the fifth volume of the 'Sixkiller, U.S. Marshal' series. Not having read any of the other volumes I can't say what we might be missing but I did not notice anything in the course of the story that made me feel like I was missing a crucial piece of information.

Marshal John Henry Sixkiller (who is of Indian descent) is sent by a state judge into Kansas to track down a man who has been killing the jury members who convicted a murderer by the name of Henry Garrett. The judge is certain it is Garrett's brother.

After arriving in Kiowa City, Sixkiller is confronted by a criminal who knows him as a Marshal. When the man tries to draw on him, the lightning fast Sixkiller guns him down in the local saloon. Instead of admitting to the local sheriff that he's a Marshal, Sixkiller decides to use the incident to build a reputation as a criminal and is jailed and manages to escape, ensuring that he can be brought into the fold of a criminal gang with ties to the now-deceased Henry Garrett.

What Sixkiller doesn't suspect is that the mastermind behind the gang is an attractive and extremely viscous woman, Lottie Dalmas, who was Garrett's girlfriend, and that Garrett's brother might just be a pawn in the whole thing.

And if Sixkiller thought Dalmas was being ruthless to the jury that hanged her boyfriend, wait until he sees what she does to the town that failed to stop a U.S. Marshal from infiltrating her gang!

I liked the book the most of the three Johnstone westerns I've now read. Other than the contrivance of a Marshal sandbagging a sheriff by pretending to be a criminal who escapes from jail and then conveniently turns himself back in when he's hurt, this book had a good story line with credible characters. The good guys are still 'white hat' good guys and the bad are clearly bad, but that's part of the charm of reading a western like this.

If you like the western genre then this is a book to read.

Looking for a good book? Blood for Blood by William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone is an adventurous western with a strong central character and is a fun western read.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

THE LAST WORD FROM THE GALLOWS

John Henry Sixkiller is sent by Judge Isaac Parker to Kiowa City, Kansas to investigate the possibility of a VENGENCE killing. The Garrett Gang lead by brothers Henry and Simon have both been imprisoned. Simon the youngest has been hung and Henry has decided with help of Little Dalama to get revenge on the residing Judge Doolittle and the jury who found him guilty.(Pay back)
Judge Parker summons John Henry Sixkiller for the job. Now John has to go under cover to infiltrated the gangs stronghold..Silver Skull Ranch which is owned run by Little Dalama..it's a
hideaway for owlhoots on the run from the law.
This definitely has a lot of action with gangster using analytical planning for their revenge on the Judge and the men who were on the jury. The killing has already started, snippers, assassin it's just a hot scary mess. The folks of Kiowa City are in a uproar but a quiet one.
Your going to enjoy this adventure headed by
U. S. Marshal John Henry Sixkiller and how fearless this man is. Also he faces bigots/racism,
but he doesn't slow it to slow him down in his quest arresting the killers of the West. I say to U.S.
Marshal John Henry Sixkiller keep your powder dry and enjoy that cool stein of beer the next time you visit.

This book got me back into reading. It was so easy to read and the action was easy to follow. I don’t think it was groundbreaking but it had me hook with every word. Like I had an itch to read it during my breaks at work and now it’s got in the habit of cramming books in work whenever I can. I have another book from the same author that I’m excited to read.

This is a Western in the old style. Characters are well developed and plot moves. Sixkiller is a great character, a half breed working for Judge Parker in the Arkansas Territory. He is sent to Kansas to deal with a suspected vengeance on the persons who sentenced a criminal to hang. He comes in undercover and infiltrates the gang. It only gets hotter from here.

The J. A, Johnstone behind this one delivers as always.

Anytime you can find a western written by the Johnstones, you know you've got a great story with a undoubtedly non-traditional hero in front of you. Johnstone's legion of heroes cross from one coast to the other and every mountain, prairie and swamp in between. This book gives us a new hero, a Cherokee US Marshall who must work against the prejudice his race faces during the early days of the west. He accepts any job but knows he will only have the toughest challenges that no one else wants. Johnstone books are known for setting a great backstory and developing their characters, main and supporting, so that they come to life. This hero must become an outlaw to find his man. Along the way, the reader is treated to some of the best Western writing today. As always, I'm sure we'll see this unique hero again, in his own series and popping up as a character in the many, many great Western series carrying the Johnstone name.
