The truth is out. Meegan isn't human. Isoldesse isn't a goddess. All because of a rescue mission gone wrong. Now, best friends Kenna and Meegan are at odds when it comes to fulfilling their destiny. One worries that revealing Isoldesse's true agenda may cause more harm than good, while the other only cares about retribution for her destroyed home world. They must work together with their Sendarian abductors to rescue their friends and family from the rebels. Except this time, Meegan's not holding back. She's accepted the title of Fawness and the powers that come with it, which is good because she's not the only one seeking retribution. The ones who destroyed Meegan's world are on their way, and the battle is inevitable. The Obard are coming. The stakes are raised even higher in this concluding story as Kenna and Meegan try to survive the coming dangers that not only threaten them but also the entire Sendara world.

After reading Isoldesse last year, I looked forward to seeing how the saga ended after those massive cliffhangers. Out comes Fawness, and it was full of surprises and a thrill ride from start to finish.

There's plenty to enjoy in this second installment and lots of improvement. The magic and the world building is expanded and deepened, along with the lore. It answered most of the questions I had at the end of book 1 and explored much more about the setting's history and conflicts. I do like how there was a shade of grey to everything, not just a good vs evil with no nuance. Though I wonder how each species looked, as they felt like they were humanoid with just different skin, eye, and hair colors, which is fine. It also goes in further to the debate of magic vs technology that started with nuggets in the first book, and how both paths could go.

The prose is not too difficult to read, and while there is some unique terms, I didn't feel too lost in them as I understood what each of them meant. For the most part, I felt like I was in the setting. The audiobook narration by Kristin Hilgart was also an improvement and felt smoother.

Streamlining the stories to just three main POVs helped the flow compared to the first book, where it felt like there was so much to keep track of. While there's still remnants of this present, many of the smaller subplots were converged together. We're following Meegan, Kenna, and Gemma mainly in this installment. Kenna has to deal with some family revelations, and Meegan has revealed her alien origins, and the two are handling the threats to the worlds in different ways, and their friendship is put to the test. Gemma, meanwhile, is handling the resistance movement, and is wonder if it was for the best for her people. Each character developed well and I enjoyed where they ended up once everything settled down.

The Aveo Compendium series is highly ambitious and I felt while it's enjoyable as is, it was so close to being great, but a couple things kept it from reaching that top tier. The biggest hurdle was that there were too many characters to keep up with in a book that's about the length of many 2020's YA Fantasy books, not giving many of the secondary characters time to develop. There were other small things that confused me, mostly place names and locations, but it wasn't as big of a deal as it was in book 1. I partly mark that up to being over a year since I read the first book.

I would highly recommend to future readers to read Isoldesse and Fawness close together, as there's a lot of info and plots that carry over and I had to check back to the first book multiple times to check some facts on my part to make sure there were no contradictions.

If you're looking for a space fantasy adventure series, don't miss this one!
