Matthew was born in Mount Pleasant Michigan. After spending some time in New York and Virginia, his family finally settled down in the desert Southwest where he spent the remainder of his childhood.

As a young adult, Matthew decided to drop out of college in order to pursue a life of masonry and beer drinking, both of which seemed to come natural to him. A decade later, he decided these habits were beginning to wear on his health, so he eased up on the masonry.

When Matthew got married, his loving wife persuaded him that it would be in his best interest to stop drinking like a fish and find a different hobby. After several trips to the ER to get his fingers unglued, Matthew came to the conclusion that building model airplanes was too dangerous. He decided to take up writing and has had several essays published in respectable periodicals. The most popular was a letter to the editor of a local newspaper demanding that a certain speed bump be removed. He was quite sure it would have garnered more attention if Marla Pickens hadn't hogged the limelight with the recipe for her famous tuna casserole.

Matthew owes a great debt of gratitude to his wife and son who, after reading the rough draft of "Dead, but Not for Long," begged him not to quit his day job. Also, Matthew is indebted to his sister and co-author for the constructive criticism throughout the writing of the aforementioned book. The constant utterance of, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever read" helped to hone Matthew's writing skills and condition him for even the toughest reviewers.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the abuse he endured co-writing his first full length novel, he is now working on a sequel. Matthew hopes to continue writing well into the afterlife.

I really enjoyed this book. I have never read, or watched anything zombie that took on the perspective of people that are trapped in a hospital. Hospitals always seem to be lost causes and death traps, so it was pretty awesome to read about one that made it past the first days and continued to make it.

This book is written from a few different point of views, which I love, but it starts you off with Kieth, Eric and Jack. A nurse and two security guards that start off the defenses. Though one of them doesn't help out to much, I don't want to say who as he seemed to be the humor to set off the horror in the beginning, and I also don't want to give major story spoilers either.

As time moves on you are introduced to a ton of different characters but it isn't ever overwhelming, and it is easy to keep track of who is who. Snake and his biker gang are my favorites out of everyone, they just weren't what you would expect from a gang of rough looking men.

The story has enough horror and gore in it that it makes a great zombie book. I also enjoyed the fact that the zombies are the classic kind that moan and shuffle and not the kind that run and talk. The only thing I disliked, and this may come across as harsh (not on the authors, but on myself), and there is a **spoiler** coming up here. . .But no one of importance dies, yeah that sounds pretty bad on me. But in my defense I feel like when you have zombies and people that you tend to grow to like someone needs to go, it gives more emotion to the reader. For everyone to have so many close calls and still make it out okay just doesn't fit right to me. It seems like there is going to be another book in the making, so it could happen sometime then.

I also like the reason for why the zombies are around, I won't give that reason. It is something I haven't seen before so I was a little shocked, but it made sense. The only thing I would like to know is how it came to be. Who knows it could be in the second book I am hoping for. . .there I dropped the hint twice now.

All in all this book made for a very good zombie read, at least to me. I love pretty much anything zombie (don't ask why, I don't understand it myself) and hate it when I read or watch a bad zombie book or movie.

Would I recommend this book? Yes I would, all the reasons are listed above

I quite liked this book! I was in the mood for a zombie book and I am glad I chose this one. It kept me interested for sure. Loved the characters and how they are working together in the hospital. Overall a good read!

If you're a zombie aficionado like myself, you know that Hospitals = Death. So I was delighted to see a book break that mold. Dead but Not for Long shadows a diverse group of survivors as they work together to secure just such a death trap while continuing to care for patients. Physicians, nurses, patients, security guards and even a hardcore group of do-good Christian bikers fight for their lives, and the safety of their new sanctuary as death takes hold of Lansing, Michigan. Dead but Not for Long is multifaceted. There is no shortage of gory zombie action paralleling the personal growth of each character. Difficult choices are made and loved ones are lost. All week I have been catching up with zombie books that have been sitting on my ereader. This is the fifth one I've read and it was another poor one. It hasn't been a great week overall.

Lets start with our hero MC, Eric the hospital security guard. Eric lives at home with mummy and slobs around the basement, not ever bothering to tidy up, wash himself or wash his uniform, meaning he literally stinks. He is the laziest man on the planet and spends most of his shift sleeping out of sight or stuffing his face from vending machines. He is rude, disgusting, sex obsessed, useless and a complete moron. And THIS is supposed to be the hero of the book? He slimes about chatting up nurses and pigging out, and the appearance of him on each page makes you want to shower to wash Eric slime out of your brain. He's one of the most revolting charachers I've had the misfortune to read about. All he does is wet himself and vomit over people throughout the book. Gross.

Eric is also a compulsive liar, trying to make himself look good and heroic and sexy (*shudder*) when in fact he is a useless coward who never does his job. He is obsessing over the ex he has been stalking since she dumped him and capturing a female zombie to be his new girlfriend. (*double shudder*) Why has he not been bitten already? We also have the nurse who is so bad at her job that she keeps it only by sleeping with her boss. Surprise. Add in the opening chapter about the sex obsessed borderline paedophile on a cruise who is there just to annoy women and get laid (some hope of that mate) and just finds zombies on the ship. Not sure what the point was in his somewhat short story at the start of the book.

There were a few decent characters in the hospital like Eric's security boss Jack, the nurse Keith, and the biker gang but that bit of the story which was decent kept being ruined by Eric's stupid ass adventures outside the hospital and I got fed up every time we switched back to him. By the time he was back to annoying his ex and her kids, and getting in everyone's way, I'd had all of him that I could stomach.

There was potential in this book if we had stuck to the main story in the hospital and followed those interesting characters and left Eric out completely. Sadly Eric ruins the entire book and I doubt I'll bother trying anything else by the author in case Eric or something similar pops up again.

First off, I hate zombie novels. Then why rate this book so high? Frankly, because I couldn't put it down. I may have hated the zombies, the horror, and one of the main characters, but I could not stop reading once I started. This darn book kept me up several nights in a row!

It's about the zombies taking over the world, and trapping a bunch of people in a hospital. You have some awesome dudes (like the Bikers for Jesus) and some seriously annoying dudes (like the rogue doctor) ... and then you have Eric. The most irritating yet entertaining selfish bastard ever to walk the face of the earth -- the kind of guy who perves on zombie women and leaves an entire family to die just so he can drive off with a bucket of chicken. Eric is sheer genius. He's the character you love to hate and you continue reading in the hopes he will die a gruesome, awful death. He doesn't. Rats.

That being said, the second half of the novel is a little less engaging than the first, if only because Eric drops out of the picture and becomes a background character with the occasional mention. After a dozen chapters with him, I kind of missed the little rat fink and his hideous behavior. It was a freebe on Amazon, I had no idea what it was, and boy did I find out.

Apart from rampant gore everywhere you look, the book was surprisingly clean. Sadly, of course, it has an unfinished ending no doubt leading into a series about these characters. And darn, I'll probably have to read them too.

I wanted to like this book, but in the end it was just okay. Several times during the story the author developed conflict between characters but failed to use that conflict in full. Yes, there was a lot of zombie contact, but what the reader is after is the human story, and it is here that Matthew Kinney fails us. He sets up two main conflicts between his protagonist and his "villains," both just caricatures who never create real tension for the reader. In fact, the first conflict--begun then abandoned--is almost comical in nature. And as the book is neither comedy or horror novel it is bound to disappoint both audiences.

Eric Wapowski - MVP

ZomPocs are my guilty pleasure. Having read enough of them, it can be tough to tell them apart. This is the only one that has Eric Wapowski the Zombie Slayer in it though!!! His daring exploits had me howling with laughter. The element of laugh out loud humor interspersed amongst the suspense and horror of the undead was an enjoyable mixture.

The survivors do surprisingly well living in a fortified hospital with access to medicine, food, transportation, gas, guns, and manpower. They even have support from the military. I was never really too concerned for the wellbeing of the survivors, even when they had some close calls. This just isn’t that type of story.

We started off following two main characters but they fade into the background as others are introduced. Toward the end we flashed between multiple POVs to the point it became disorienting at times.

All in all it was an enjoyable read. It leaned a bit toward the lighter side for this genre and Eric Wapowski wins MVP. I struggled with continuing the series or not. I think I will, especially since the novella is dedicated to Eric.

I really enjoyed this book!! Apocalypse novels are usually hit or miss but this a one really makes the mark. There is horror, suspense, and even some comedy. The point of view changes to different characters so you truly get a feel for all the different characters. I couldn't put it down!!

I have to admit that "Dead, but Not for Long" is one of the best zombie books I've read to date. Why? It's a book about normal, everyday people, who band together and try to survive in a hostile new world; everyone pitching in for the common good of the group.

Most of the story takes place within a small hospital in Lansing, MI. where all of the staff and patients on the bottom two floors are killed, reanimated and now seeking prey of their own. A male nurse, janitor, two security guards and other staff members make a stand on the third floor; slowly clearing it and the upper two floors of zombies. The siege continues while other survivors arrive and bolster the defenses. The characters are well developed and I felt somewhat of a special bond with them - all except one, Eric, who irritated me to no end; a self-claimed expert of everything, but actually, a world renown "slug". I especially liked the bikers. Their wit, sarcasm and camaraderie was uplifting - pitching in and working very hard to help protect this "outpost". It is sad when some of the characters I've come to know, fall during battle.

The authors have a knack for creating situations that appear hopeless, readers will find themselves holding the book tighter, squeezing their knees together while plowing through the words to see how it shakes out. There are peaks like this throughout the story. Once the government and military get involved, things begin to change. Will they be saviors or...?

Some surprises are shared at the end, but then the story just stops short. However, it is a great story and I really enjoyed it...I will be watching for the sequel. Great job authors! Highly recommended!

This book was a nice surprise. I grabbed this and its companion novella when both were free via Amazon. Although I read the novella, Eric the Zombie Killer first, it didn't matter in the grande schemes of things.

Kinney has a nice approach to taking ordinary people, placing them in the middle of a war zone and seeing what unfolds. In a hospital in the zombie-overrun Lansing, Michigan, a handful of staff, patients, visitors, and 'motorcycle club' fight for survival against the unyielding numbers of zombies trying to make them dinner.

Kinney captures how quickly civilization within a microcosm can turn without a few clear-headed individuals attempting to lead. The bikers turn out to be saviours as they help guard the hospital, coordinate supply runs, risk death to save other survivors.

Eric, he is still a total jackwagon. This book he is a small player, which the novella centers around his ability to survive.

It matters not if you don't like zombie books. This is a tale of survival that happens to have zombies.

This was a rather nice change from some of the awful zombie fiction I've tried to read lately. The characters were interesting (though the "dumb nurse" sleeping her way into her degree was a bit cliched and sexist), the story was written well, and it was actually book length instead of a novella sold as a book. I don't have any complaints about it except the one about the nurse, and very few of the characters in the hospital ended up injured or dying; there were a whole lot of close calls that were suspenseful enough for entertainment, but so little death of main characters in a zombie apocalypse was not exactly realistic. Not that a zombie apocalypse is realistic. Well, it is if you look at the human race destroying our world as the zombies eating everything, then it's right on target.

I'd certainly recommend this over some of the junk that I've read in this genre lately. A good effort by the author who I hope writes some more in the future.

I was hooked while reading the Prologue - very well written, loved the characters, a really good read! Would love to see it as a movie.

Held up at the hospital is not normally a good thing, unless you're one of lucky ones that are still alive. A worldwide virus outbreak was plowing it's way through the country taking out as many of the living and turning them into flesh eating zombies. A small group of people found refuge at the hospital where people were being brought in for treatment and a safe place to stay. But it only takes one infected person to turn everything upside down and it's now the living vs the dead.

I love zombies so this was a great read and would recommend it if you love horror

Dead, But Not For Long is a character rich novel of survivors teaming up to make a way forward in an apocalyptic world of the undead. Some readers will be disappointed that more of the "forward" is not there, but the tale has all the pieces we love to see in this genre: an almost doomed, therefore, ultimate fight against the odds, characters to love and hate, losses that make us cringe, the hope for a cure, and plenty of inventive violence.

Another plus for this particular work is that the author is able to capture the gruesome nature of the genre without going over board on gore (at least in my opinion).

I recommend this zombie adventure to readers who like character-driven plots with tons of action and hold-your-breath near misses.

A Christian friendly zombie book? Actually the gore and menace work fine. I didn't miss the usual F bombs. The human antagonist was more entertaining than he had any right to be.
There were enough protagonists to root for that the inevitable deaths mattered.

The biker gang really stole the book for me. The military will surely get more 'screen time' in the sequel.

The Sci Fi explanation for the zombies is actually inspired by a real life phenomenon. The set piece action scenes were more epic than I expected.

Christian characters were interesting but never preachy or creepy. Yes that deserves a star!

actually a very well written book and one that I enjoyed reading. Though the survivors have yet to deal deeply with the military and have yet to come across the miltia or the bad guys.

I really enjoyed some of the characters in the book;

1. Eric ( he made me laugh) with his fake bravado.. but he did step up to the plate few times.
2. Marla ( nurse) = Lost in space that one is
3. Autumn ( I think her name is- little girl fighting cancer) = quick whit she has

A book, kinda reminded me of Season 1 of Walking Dead where people are doing what they can to survive step by step and learning very fast from their mistakes and to not let it happen again.

Dead, but Not for Long by Matthew Kinney

In Lansing Michigan a horrid outbreak occurs. A nurse and a security guard to help the people. Soon they find that the virus has spread and the infected dead are trying to infiltrate. Will they be able to save the uninfected and themselves, or will it be too late?

A fast paced thrilling tale of suspense and horror. The story is original, filled with a lot of intense moments. Very detailed it feels as if you are part of this nightmare. Those who love thrilling zombie stories will enjoy Dead, but Not for Long.

A surprisingly good horror story about a plague that sweeps parts of the world, infecting people and turning them into flesh-eating zombies. This story focuses on a few survivors in a hospital and how they cope with the terrible turn of events trying to stay alive while helping their patients get well. I really enjoyed this book, though the ending seemed rushed to me, and was a let-down after the great pacing in the rest of the book. This one had me reading it till I was finished in the wee hours of the a.m. I hope these authors write more along this line!

By now the zombie apocalypse isn't a novel (pardon the pun) concept. I wasn't sure how far I was going to get in this book's version. The first couple if characters you encounter are not lovable and you kinda wish one of them would just get bitten so we'd be done with him! The addition of a gang of do-gooder bikers and the staff of a safe haven hospital however made me hang on. I'm looking forward to the sequel. I am not however going to pickup the side novel about Eric. Can't he just get bitten already?!

Dead, but not for long by Mathew Kinney
I liked this Zombie novel, well written, gripping and everything I like about the genre. The action is thick, fast and gory. The characters fight with guts and loyalty. The zombies keep coming.
I was a little confused with the point of view, as halfway through the book, the main character changed from Keith to Snake and a Keith, character I’d began to like. was sidelined.
Another character, Eric, though funny and tragic, didn’t add anything to the story.
Overall a worthy Zombie read.

I love this book being set in Michigan

This book is great, set in my home state, I loved it. It is the typical zombie book, zombie outbreak, military lies about it's containment, boom massive zombies.
What I liked about this book is that it made me laugh, sometimes in the most inappropriate spots.
Also there are great characters, some you love, some you tolerate, some that just fascinate you completely. That psycho Dr is great. I definitely give it a thumbs up for zombie genre readers, but will be honest, it being set in Michigan raises it from a four to five star for me.

This was fun to read. The characters made me feel sympathetic to their plight, and there were a couple of loose ends that made me think of possibilities for a sequel. The Dr. Doune's discovery of the origin of the zombie epidemic could make for an interesting plot line. As for characters, I enjoyed Snake and Lindsey quite a bit and thought Helga and Jack could potentially make a great zombie assassination duo. It was a Kindle read to visit, especially for fans of The Walking Dead.

VERY good book. Very descriptive and a great read. Eric was portrayed very well but my only issue was Cheri, her story wasn't really finished IMHO.
Recommend to everyone.
My first ever Zombie book and I am glad to say I really enjoyed it.
Maybe don't read it at night, just before bed when you have to turn all the lights off to go to bed though, shadows do strange things when you have an active imagination!

A lot of the characters in this story just came across as having ridiculous reactions to the gore and violence going on around them, which really took me out of the story time and again. It struck me as incredibly strange for such a dire and intense situation.

On the plus side, a hospital setting was a compelling choice. It showed just how quickly and horribly things would get out of hand. The chaos spreading so fast was very well done.

I gave this 4 stars. It wasn’t a typical zombie book as the storyline was a little different than most. It takes place in Lansing and a group of survivors take control of a hospital. Most books run from hospitals because they are usually the highest concentration of zombies. This also has a biker gang that helps out and a few docs and nurses trying to keep their patients alive. Maybe it wasn’t a lot different but I enjoyed it more than most.

It was OK, probably a bit too long. A group of plague survivors gathers in a hospital, with a group of I've-seen-the-light converted bikers acting as security. There are lots of characters in the novel, not all of whom are followed adequately. In fact, some just drop off the map (e.g., Chuck). There are some good moments, both on the humor and horror front. Was a good change of pace for me; I just wish it had ended more quickly.

This is a great zombie story. It pulled me in early and didn't let up. Rich and vibrant characters are difficult to create, but Matthew and Lesa did a wonderful job. Intense and well choreographed action drove the storyline forward and the book was over before I knew it. The zombie genre has been overworked, but this little gem stayed true to the zombie spirit and is a very entertaining read. I love zombie stories and always will, keep on writing them. Great job, guys!

Better then I thought it would be

Wow this was so much better then I thought possible. I don't always read zombie books because they are so much the same. This was you classic zombie book but the writing was very good the characters where very good. It was comical at times and Eric was one of the best. The one. Character you want to be dead but the idiot just keeps staying alive.

This was one strange book. At times it was funnybut there were some serious parts too.For being in the middle of an apocalypse these people were quite organized. It was also amazing the way they ended up with all the reformed bikers who each had a special trade for the situation. Like I said it was a strange book but I really enjoyed reading it. I plan on reading the sequel, it'll be fun to see how it ends.
