Eynhallow

Rate this book
Shaw and Innes are the lucky protectors of the remote Scottish island of Eynhallow. A mysterious, rocky outcrop uninhabited except for Shaw and Innes, it is steeped in paranormal legend. When a strange man arrives by boat a few days before Christmas, they're inclined to let him suffer the wounds he's endured lost at sea when they rescue him. After all, he spouts a lot of misconceptions about Eynhallow's most famous residents—the finfolk, a reputedly vicious strain of mermen of lore.

When Peter Colcross realizes his saviors are themselves finfolk and can shapeshift into human form, he is forced to rethink everything he thought about sea magic and what might have become of his wife who disappeared after leaving their Glagow home in search of Eynhallow a few years ago. He's determined to find her because he's read that finfolk lure women to their doom on the island. But these mermen are kind and caring creatures.

They're also gay.

What is the mystery of Eynhallow, and will Peter ever discover the truth? And will he be able to forgive and let go of the past in order to move forward into the future?

Eynhallow is a touching story, full of mystery, two mermen who are deeply in love, and a shared secret that we don’t get to fully understand until the end of the story. I loved the descriptions of their remote island which is so very different from our hectic world. Some of the comments they made about modern life and its devices were really funny. Their determination to maintain their isolation is clear, and the reasons for it only emerge slowly.

Shaw and Innes are the protectors of a remote Scottish island, and they take their task very seriously. As 'finfolk', they know of the damage mankind can bring to their shores if they're not careful. But they also value life, so when a stranger is about to drown, they end up rescuing him despite their fear he'll find out too much. The story revolves around their getting to know him, and the revelations of his reasons for coming to their island. While this part of the story kept me interested enough, the love between Shaw and Innes also became obvious; not just in some very hot interludes, but in the way they treated and respected each other. They kept each other and their environment safe at all times.

This is a story to be savored, and maybe even read a few times, since I'm sure it has a different flavor once you know how it ends. If you like stories that are as mysterious as they are beautiful, if you enjoy a touch of the paranormal and how it interacts with the 'modern' world, and if you're up for a major twist at the end, one that will most probably surprise you, you will probably love this novella as much as I did.

As I started reading this story the very first thoughts for it were that this story is like a dream within a dream. Yes, that is right, now that I think about it this author has that “dream-like” writing style. A fantasy, a tale with peculiar images painted in words. And so I took this journey, in this beautiful dreamland called Eynhallow where I met Shaw and Innes.
I submerged into Shaw’s body and watch through his eyes as this story unraveled. I saw him love his ethereal husband Innes, I saw him worship him. I saw the beautiful task they had as guardians of Eynhallow and the creatures all around. But alas, as it is in most dreams, something intruded their peace. A man showed up with his human misguidance and false conception looking for his long lost wife. This man came with a lot of determination and a lot of misery. As much as Shaw and Innes valued their peace and wanted the man away, they could not let him suffer or harm himself. And so they set to help him on his journey.

Like I said this story started like a dream, continued in the light form of a nightmare and ended like a fairytale. For the most part it was quite a haze, you don’t understand what the story is about until the very end, so you keep wondering about the connection of this wonderful paranormal world, a world with gorgeous finfolk and their ways of life, and the human world, full of pain, cruelty and nightmares. The twist in the end although it shines a light in the story it left me not quite satisfied. I don’t know what I was expecting really, but I was a bit surprised by it. I suppose that’s just me, once again wanting just a bit more…

As it is the story seems unique, at least I haven’t encountered a similar one in the genre. I liked the idea and Shaw and Innes were quite alluring. It is not the hot-makes-my-heart-race kind of story and even the anticipation that is build is not on the high levels. Never the less it was quite good and I would suggest it to the fans of the genre.

Eynhallow has a mysterious island, sexy mermen and a twist that makes it well worth a read. Despite being sort, the story does not feel under developed nor do the main characters, Shaw and Innes.
