An original ebook short story from New York Times bestselling author Chevy Stevens featuring Psychiatrist Nadine Lavoie and Staff Sergeant Sandy McBride, from Never Knowing. Sandy is working the biggest case of her life—the Campsite Killer, who has been hunting women for almost forty years. She's finally close to nailing him, if she can just keep her head in the game. But when an old friend calls with a lead about Sandy's mother's murder, Sandy is pulled into the past—a past she thought she'd closed the door on. Her life is about to get real complicated, real fast.
CHEVY STEVENS lives on Vancouver Island with her husband and daughter. When she’s not working on her next book, she’s spending time with her family and their two dogs. Chevy's debut novel, STILL MISSING, was a New York Times bestseller and won the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel. Her books, including THOSE GIRLS which Stephen King called "incredibly scary" have been published in more than thirty countries. Her eighth novel, THE HITCHHIKERS, is out Oct.7/25
I love Chevy Stevens, but I saw absolutely no point to this at all. I couldn't even remember the book, let alone try to remember this character. Or care. Skip it. Or read it on the toilet. No, skip it.
Reto literario pendientes 2021.
Staff Sergeant Sandy McBride and partner Billy were getting closer to nabbing the Campsite Killer – the desperation of “sooner rather than later” was with them, as it was spring and he always killed in the summer months. When a woman came forward with a link to the killer, it was their best lead yet…
In the meantime, Sandy was still working the cold case of her mother’s murder many years previously – she had been a child of six years old – her father had never been found and the “not knowing” had consumed her for years…
The Other Side is a very short, fast paced story but one which is a little abrupt in resolution in my opinion. Enjoyable but if you haven’t read Never Knowing, it’s important to read it first so as to avoid spoilers. I enjoy this author’s work, so have no hesitation in recommending her thrillers.
Staff Sgt McBride and her partner Billy had been on the Campsite Killer case for quite a while, but never seemed to catch a break. Then one day a domestic violence case sounded familiar.
The thing is that Staff Sgt McBride was thrown into a closet by her mother to hide, while someone had raped and murder her mother while she listened. She thought maybe it was her father, because he never came home.
Two cases that have similarities, one long past and one just yesterday. The writing wasn’t bad, but I confess to getting confused about what was happening a time or two. Three star short story.
Campsite Killer had a daughter named Sara. When the killer learned of this news, he reached out to her. Staff Sergeant Sandy McBride is on the case. While Sara is investigating she is contacted by someone who has information about her mother’s murder. Sara will finally learn the truth about her mother’s murder.
I thought this book was a nice, quick read for a short story. It was a nice tie in to Never Knowing. It is in that book where Sandy fully investigates the case of the Campsite Killer. However I would say the main focus of this short story was really Sandy and her mother’s murder. It was good to get to know the full details of the case. Also it was nice to see that Sandy finally gets closure. The only thing about this book that would have made it better is that the murder case surrounding Sandy’s mother was stronger. So for me I wanted more of the intensity that comes from a murder investigation like what was the killer’s motivation for the crime? I did learn the reason but to me it kind of came off as ok here is the reason and accept it. None of the other characters that Sandy interviewed were very memorable. So this book just left me wanting more. Luckily Chevy has a new book that will hopefully give me that titled Always Watching.
After just having read her really good novel, "Still Missing," this was a major letdown. Frankly, after all was said and done, I am not sure what happened. I flipped back and forth a couple of times at the end to see if I missed something. Fast to the end, convoluted and oddly puerile. Far more novice attempt than her debut. 1.5 stars. (PS-if you are a fan this is super-short so, if you must read all of her stuff-read it at your peril).
Un relato corto basado en la novela Nunca lo sabrás, que me gustó mucho. Esto resultó una pérdida de tiempo sin ton ni son. Leer 25 páginas y sentir que perdiste el tiempo... es mucho que decir.
I never had any intentions of reading this short story only available as an ebook but I’ll do almost anything for my podcast. Very soon I’ll be doing an author spotlight of Chevy Stevens so I wanted to read as much as her stuff as I possibly could before then. Suffice it to say I didn’t like it much, it was ok. I have found that most short stories I read aren’t really my thing because it usually is little to no plot just more character development, and as a reader who prefers plots you can imagine how exciting short stories are for me. THE OTHER SIDE brings together psychiatrist Nadine Lavoie and police sergeant Sandy McBride and tells a parallel story to NEVER KNOWING, but also works as a standalone tale. I found it completely pointless unless you’re really invested in the police detectives from Never Knowing. This also reminded me how much they annoyed me in that book. Not worth the .99 cents I paid.
This was a short story and it was so fast. I wonder if this was Chevy Steven's first works. It was still a good story it was just so fast. I want to say I have read everything she has written and soon I will. I have one more book to read of hers and I am caught up on her books. Chevy is going to be an auto buy author for me FOREVER. She is so good and weaving a good story and mystery and TONS of suspense into her stories.
I highly recommend her books if you are a mystery/thriller lover like I am.
This story was far to short to do a proper review.
The Other Side is an e-short by Canadian author, Chevy Stevens. It is a very short story (half the content of the download is a preview of the author’s next book, Always Watching), and which involves Staff Sergeant Sandy McBride, one of the police officers in Never Knowing. On a background of some of the events in Never Knowing, Sandy learns some new information about the murder of her mother when Sandy was just six years old, a crime attributed to her violent and missing father. This small dose of Stevens may lack the usual build-up of tension that marks her psychological thrillers but it does add another dimension to Never Knowing and there is a twist or two to keep it interesting. It is important to read this AFTER reading Never Knowing if the reader wants to avoid spoilers. Quite a good read.
Es una historia pararlela a la que cuenta el libro "Nunca lo sabrás" pero en un relato corto, recuerda lo que pasa en la novela y añade novedades a otro caso, entretenida.
Everybody who knows me knows that I am an advocate for short books. I don't like when the writer goes on and on and on for no apparent reason. However, this book was painfully short (and unoriginal). I think at least five crime shows had this plot last week alone. Being unoriginal is ok up to some point. After all we all go for similar books, since our taste doesn't change that often. However writing a book so short that ends faster than fashion wave for men in tights?
The story is about Psychiatrist Nadine Lavoie and Staff Sergeant Sandy McBride- don't believe this. Psychiatrist Nadine Lavoie's part is smaller than anyone else in the book. Everybody in the book is or was beautiful other than Sergeant Sandy McBride. She is beautiful too, but can't admit it or the book will lose it's seriousness. Sergeant Sandy McBride is trying to solve a serial rapist/killer case by working with his daughter. She witnessed her mom's horrible rape and murder in the past. She is not all there. She blames her father for the crime. She somehow becomes a sergeant and works on her mom's case on her free time (her father is still missing). The first case is solved by itself when she gets hit in the head and loses the child she suppose to protect:
Since she was no help with the first one, she moves to the next case (her mom's). That also get resolved after talking to one witness. Thank god the woman was dying of cancer and wanted to get it out of her chest. With one or two pages left, writer also gives us the happy news of her pregnancy.
This is it- there was potential- just wasn't used.

THE OTHER SIDE brings together psychiatrist Nadine Lavoie and police sergeant Sandy McBride and tells a parallel story to NEVER KNOWING, but also works as a stand alone tale. Sandy is working the case of her life, The Campsite Killer. Nadine's client is his daughter. When Nadine is attacked, everyone assumed The Campsite Killer is responsible. Sandy has another killer on her mind, her father who had killed her mother decades ago. Or did he?
The story kept me on the seat of my chair, wanting more. There's a lot of tension in and between the sentences. The only drawback was the story was over too soon. But, there was a bonus excerpt from Stevens' newest book, out in June, ALWAYS WATCHING.
Even at 44 pages long, Chevy Stevens has me pulled in with her amazing writing style. I absolutely love how she weaves a story and how her characters feel like real people.
The Other Side is a short story based off the characters and plot of the book Never Knowing so I definitely recommend reading that first. There was a significant amount of overlap between the two and at least half of this story was pulled directly from Never Knowing so if you read them back-to-back, it may come off as redundant. As it was a while between the stories for me, it was a nice refresher. I did enjoy the added elements to Sandy McBride's story.
As with all of Chevy Stevens work, this was a worthwhile, and very quick, read!
This novella serves as a summary of Never Knowing and yet it give us insight into some of the characters. I'm guessing that it will lead into her newest book which is coming out soon. There was some new information revealed and I'm sure it is to bridge the gap between the two book.
I'm excited to see where the story is going and to find out more details about the Campsite Killer and apparently there is now a story to who killed Sandy's mother and what happened.
3.5 - 4 stars (remembering this is a novella, which I find difficult to rate)
A short quick read that filled my lunch hour for me. The story had the initial focus of capturing and solving the case of the so called 'Campsite Killer', but was actually about the heroine's personal life and solving the (unrelated) murder of her own mother. Maybe I overthought the story, but I expected the two case threads were actually going to tie together. Alas, they didn't. Nevertheless, an entertaining read from an author I haven't come across before.
This was just ok to me. I have enjoyed this author in the past. Although this is a short story, I just felt everything was a bit too rushed. Just because i didn't love this, it won't deter me from reading her other books.
That was it!!!??? She is a genius for doing this though, sell for .99 and make thousands. Am looking forward to her next novel, but am not falling for these short e-books anymore!
This is a very short ebook. Has some of the same characters as her second book, Never Knowing. The same therapist/psychiatrist, Nadine, and the same police officer, Sandy. It was interesting to get some backstory on Sandy in this short story, things I didn’t know about in the book, Never Knowing. There really wasn’t much to this short story since it was less than 50 pages long. Not really sure what the point of this story was. Most of it was just retelling the facts of the book, Never Knowing.
I would have enjoyed this if it was a full novel. The ideas are there but get thrown out too fast for them to have any real impact. We don't get to know anyone or feel for them before we learn about what happens. It's a short story full of twists and action but zero plot.
This was a good short story. As soon as I started to read it i immediately knew it was connected to her book never knowing. It was nice to get a little insight into a different character of never knowing. It was a nice little read that can easily be finished in one day. I love Chevy Stevens and recommended every book she has written.
