"You're keeping A SCRAPBOOK.
Only old ladies and pre-pubescent girls keep scrapbooks, John."
"It's not a scrapbook, Sherlock. I'm collecting papers relevant to the cases. It helps me remember the details. And it was locked away in my desk drawer."
"The lock on your desk drawer was insulting me with its pretences at security.
IT'S A SCRAPBOOK..."
Holy Crab, this book was awesome!! I absolutely love the original Sherlock Holmes books; adore the Sherlock Holmes movies (y’know, the new ones, with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law) and totally freaking LOVE BBC’s Sherlock. So how, how, how was I meant to just leave Sherlock: The Casebook on the shelves in Waterstones?! I just wasn’t. That’s how.
To a total Holmes addict such as me (I’ve got a post of Hounds of the Baskervilles on my wall – it’s the whole book, written in a way that shows a picture! It’s awesome!), this book was perfection. It may have focused on the TV series (my fave Sherlock adaptation ever, btw), but there was loads of non-Sherlock info in here too. Like did you know that Arthur Conan Doyle absolutely hated writing the Sherlock Holmes books? All he wanted was to write this big 'serious' novel, and all everyone wanted was for him to write about Holmes and Watson! Ha! That one made me laugh no end. And the non-Sherlock info didn’t end there, and got more fascinating as you got in. I loved learning about how Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss came up with the show idea, and all the characters and everything. Oh, I just loved it all! But to find the other stuff out, you’re just gonna have to read this…
But onto the Sherlock stuff now! I adore the show. Obviously. And my God, this Sherlock stuff was just awesome! It was laid out like a scrapbook, showing detailed info on all of the cases Sherlock and John have done. It's written by John and was utterly fascinating. And then there were the post-its Sherlock had stuck all over the place, offering snide comments and random remarks. And then there was the banter between the two of them, which is so true to the show and had me cracking up. Oh, I just loved it! I loved it so, so much. It was just so much fun and, despite what Sherlock may say, was utterly fascinating.
I will admit now that this whole review has been the ramblings of a crazy fan girl. But that's only because I am a crazy fan girl. I am totally, 100% Sherlocked. Sherlock Holmes is just so legendary. It's the first crime novel I ever read and fell totally in love with. Holmes is the reason I love shows like CSI and Criminal Minds and The Mentalist. I just love how he's so, so smart that he's not really human. He's amazing, incredible, beyond description. His mind... oh, how I'd love to be in his mind, at least for a little while. Though afterwards, I would probably be quite pleased to be back inside my own "vacant" little mind.
So yes: whatever kind of Sherlock Holmes fan you are, this book is definitely for you. If you love Sherlock, read this to get even more into the show, to find out things you didn't know before. If you aren't, read this and I promise you that you are going to be 100% Sherlocked too. And if, like me, you're going crazy waiting for the next series - why is Autumn so flipping far away?! - then this is the perfect gift to tide you over 'til then. It's a fun read that you can gobble up in one sitting (like me) or dip in and out of.
Sherlock Rules! :D

I absolutely love this book!
I first read it over two years ago and have picked it up several times since then.

It's so much fun to read. I love that it compares the episodes to the original stories.
The concept of the sticky notes is amazing, I'm a big fan of that.

Definitely a must-have for fans of the show!

A great and informative guide to the show... loved the behind the scenes info and the post-it notes throughout haha. Only Sherlock/John/Mycroft would be having 'discussions' like that:)

I wish there had been more on Mycroft and Lestrade but a minor quibble really.

Worth your hard earned money in my opinion *waves* happy reading!

Salah satu buku yang wajib (yah, ga wajib2 amat sih) dimiliki oleh penggemar serial Sherlock. Isinya: ringkasan cerita, behind the scene, komentar, foto, foto, foto, sejarah, dan foto.

3.5

Interesting mix of fiction & trivia (this is supposed to be Watson's casebook) and non fiction ( short bio of Arthur Conan Doyle, comments on the original stories, on earlier adaptations and of course background on the BBC show.)

4.5 stars.

It's a mix of a casebook "created by John Watson" and brief sections on various aspects of the show, Holmes' mythology, and how each episode relates to the Doyle version.

The sections written by John have post-it notes from John, Sherlock and occasionally Mycroft. The font used for John and Mycroft's writing was fine, but the font used for Sherlock doesn't look right to me at all. I'm not sure what font it is but it just doesn't fit. It seems too neat and print like. Part of me thinks he'd use elegant cursive and not care if other people could read it or not, but he's so fastidious about grammar that I think he'd want his writing to be legible so he could communicate clearly. I want to see that sign from Scandal in Belgravia to compare the writing.

The casebook also contains a few pages on 221B, though it's mostly the living room and kitchen.

I enjoyed it, and if you like the show you should check it out.

Loved it. I even got emotional on the final page when John wrote about Sherlock being a hero. I love this show so much. I will defend it forever.

I picked this book up for one reason: I love the show. I'm glad that I did. This is a great book to compliment the first two series. Containing behind the scenes information along with a 'scrapbook' done by the character John Watson it certainly entertaining. The interviews with the actors and creators are nice insights to the workings of the show. The pages done by 'Dr. John Watson' and 'Sherlock Holmes' are amusing additions to the episodes. The personalities of the characters are well in hand.

My only wish is that Mycroft's font was different. I found it difficult to decipher what it said. Other than that this is an excellent choice for lovers of the series and I would highly recommend it.

Okay, I lied there's another thing I wish.... for series three to hurry up!

Toto bolo fakt skvelé, veľmi ma zaujímalo to zákulisie tvorby Sherlocka a táto kniha vám veľa prezradí. Páčili sa mi tie papieriky ako keby medzi Sherlockom a Johnom :D.

This is an interesting book, recommended to every Sherlock fan. :) It is a curious mix of non-fiction and fiction. Interviews with the creators and cast, info on the inspiration for each episode and other adaptations constitute the non-fiction part, while John's "scrapbook" is the fiction.

Even after all these years of being a fan (okay, I'm far from the most dedicated people in the fandom, but I still like it a lot), I learned a lot of intriguing pieces of information. Nevertheless, the fiction part is so much more fun! The post-it notes made me laugh a lot. :D Here, take a look yourself:

Although the fiction part mostly retells the episodes (from John's POV), there were some extra, unknown pieces of "backstage" information. Plus a lot of nice, shiny pictures, so you know, it's pretty cool. :D

Sadly, the books ends with season 2, you know with:

and John's tone in the last case is just so heartbreaking. :( All the pain, relived again.

But hey, there will be a new book again, right? Hopefully, before I become an old woman.

This was a very quick read - I finished it in one evening. That's not to say it isn't a wonderful book; I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I'm sad it wasn't any longer.

One of my favorite parts was the "By the Book" section that followed some of the cases (e.g. for "A Scandal in Belgravia"): It went through and examined how close the broadcast episode was to the original story, as well as explaining any other allusions to Conan Doyle's other stories. For someone who is a fan of secret references but doesn't know enough of the Holmes stories to recognize them all, like me, this was a real treat.

I also loved the notes between Sherlock and John - a few times they had me laughing out loud. I thought they were true to the characters, and were a wonderful addition to the book. My only complaint would be that Sherlock's font didn't seem very Sherlock, but that's really not that big a deal.

Overall I thought the book was wonderful, and I had very few issues with it. Other than a few grammatical or punctuation discrepancies, it was darn near perfect. For anyone who's a superfan of the show, like me, it's a great buy. Totally and completely worth it.

Mixed bag. Some of this was quite funny and interesting, but a lot of the "behind the scenes" stuff is a rehash of comments from commentaries or interviews you may have already heard/seen. Some of the "in-character" post-its were...well, out of character or awkwardly written (Also, hysterical laughter at that font being Sherlock's handwriting. HAHAHAHAHAHA...hm.)

Biggest issue: there are (based on the ones that bothered me) 3 major continuity/that's-just-not-what-happened errors, and every time I noticed one, it made me dislike the whole enterprise. If you're going to reprint e-mails with a timestamp, BE AWARE that some of your fans are detail-oriented enough to compare and contrast that with the other dates listed in the casefile, to make sure it makes sense. Also be aware that you left this fandom with nothing much to do beyond becoming experts on 9 hours of TV (and writing fanfiction) over the course of three years. We notice the shit out of things. Be careful and precise.

Very interesting read, perfect for fans of the TV show "Sherlock" and Holmes fans in general. This book is a mixture between fiction and meta, with John Watson presenting us with "case files" and his notations; as well as pieces on how each episode was created, similarities with the originals and general information about Holmes world, from Doyle to film adaptations.

Even though this book is more focused to viewers of the show, any Holmes fan might find here interesting pieces about the character. On the case files, we are shown post-it notes left by Sherlock and John, which give us an insight into the characters' relationship and their mind.

Overall, I have really enjoyed this book, although I would probably have preferred to read it while the show was on and I was fully immersed into it. I have learnt new details about the characters and the show production, and I recommend it to other fans with no doubts!

I really loved this book (I'm a Sherlock fan, pre-series 4) and this book was hilarious with all the back-and-forth sticky notes between Sherlock and John (plus the occasional dry one from Mrs Hudson) as well as Sherlock 'subtle' corrections to John's version of the events. Would recommend to any Sherlock fan. :)

Eh, this book is mostly a play-by-play of season one of the BBC television series with cute sticky notes. The parts I enjoyed (but the book sorely lacked) is the bits with interviews with the cast and crew, the making of the show, and what specifically Gatiss and Moffat pulled from Doyle's work. I recommend just watching the television series on Netflix.

A fun and engaging accessory to the Sherlock tv series. I really enjoyed the way information was presented as well as the plethora of photos included. The structure was was a bit disjointed and depending on how recently one has watched the first two series some parts nay be a bit repetitive. Still, a very solid work!

This is a delicious extra. Emphasis on extra. Lots of eye candy, a good amount of chuckles... but yes, quite unnecessary if you are only a casual viewer of Sherlock. If you are a fanatic, as in... wanting to own every piece of merchandise and fan work, needing to know all the little bits of information about the show and people involved in the show, ect. ect (you know who you are! and I am one of them, happily) this book will be well worth an hour of your time. And uh, yeah... an hour is right because man, the book is short. About 150 pages and most of that pictures and a few short articles on Sherlock, which to be honest didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Haha, honestly I got the feeling that this was a kids' book. Like, I was really into the X-files in the 90s (OMG I WAS SO INTO THE X-FILES IN THE 90s), and the X-files tie-in books (official and unofficial) were HUGE. And there were lots of them! Well, comparatively. I understand there are only 6 episodes of Sherlock, so I'm giving them a little bit of leeway, but personally I consider those episodes to be movies. There needs to be a little bit more heft in this to earn it 5 stars.

Dammit, I know Moffat once said something along the lines of Sherlock novel tie-ins not becoming a reality because the "written Sherlock" should always be Conan Doyle's stories, which is an absurd opinion for the creator of Sherlock to have (I mean, even if you are a Holmes purist (which I am assuming Moffat is not... because of freakin' Sherlock), in what way would Sherlock (the TV show) stories actually replace Doyle's stories? Moffat can't possibly be that arrogant... or can he?). But would a comic offend his sensibilities?

What I mean is that I WANT SHERLOCK COMICS NOW! COME ON! I HAVE MONEY TO GIVE YOU, DO YOU NOT WANT?

He told me once that I shouldn't make people into heroes. He said that heroes didn't exist and that even if they did he wouldn't be one of them.

Which goes to show. He wasn't always right about everything.

Independently of the fact that I love the tv series, I liked this book very much. It is funny because it includes Sherlock, John and Mycroft post-its and contains explanations about the story of the show, parallel between the tv series and the books, comments of the production team and interviews with the actors.

✩◕‿◕✿

- John: So Sherlock did his thing with the Memory Palace, sitting and sifting through the contents of his head, trying to make connections. Amazingly he did.
- Sherlock: It's a discipline I have spent years refining!
- Mycroft: I might give it a try. I'll start small, maybe develop a Memory Bungalow.
...
- Sherlock: Yes! Idiot! She shot herself in the forehead with a sniper rifle!
How is this man able to get dressed in the morning let alone function as a police officer?
...
- Mrs Hudson: The plumbing's backed up! Please tell me you haven't been flushing body parts down the loo again.
- Mycroft: Again?!
- Sherlock: The council gave us a fine last time I put fingers in the recycling bin.

Belle loves the book

I don't even know how to review this book it's so good.

Set up as John's scrapbook, it recaps the episodes of Sherlock.

When I marked this as to-read, I honestly didn't even look at the description of the book. I just saw Benedict Cumberbatch's amazing face and that was enough for me.

The saying don't judge a book by it's cover didn't apply to this book. I judged this book by it's fantastic cover and look! Five Stars! But, then again, if Benedict Cumberbatch is on the cover then it has to be good. And the stars just kept multiplying when none other than Martin Freeman appeared on the back. Who ever designed the cover clearly knew what they were doing.

But enough about the cover, the information given was very thorough in the process of making the show, and the set up/ design of the book in the fashion of a scrapbook was brilliant.

Its a book and also similar to a comic book. It has lots of pictures and clues written out. Describes the stories of the Sherlock Files BBC TV series. This covers the first two seasons. I have read a few of the real stories, but mostly the ones required during schooling, so this book helped me with more of the backstory of who Holmes is...basically a very messed up person who is brilliant. Lots of pictures of the actors and scenes of the stories.

Got it as a birthday-gift from my sister.

A must for every Sherlock fan.

It contains Johns case-notes, interviews with castmembers and writers and the history of Sherlock Holmes and Ian Doyle throughout the ages.
Informative, funny, interesting, and heart-wrenching when John writes about the Reichenbach Fall. Don't miss the last page though!

I read the US version of this "The Sherlock Files". This probably now officially puts me in the fan boy camp but I don't care. While not necessary to appreciate the show it does offer a lot of insight in to the characters, actors and even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Really looking forward to season three this Fall.
